By A Customer This review is from: The Fenian Movement (Hardcover) The Fenian Movement is a sprightly account of one of the most unusual abd most neglected chapters in the history of American international politics. Written by a specialist in this area of the United States history, and heavvily documented, especially from contemporary newspaper sources, nevertheless it is presentedin a simple and readable style, with touches of quiet but charming wit. Mrs Walker deals fairly and openly with this very tangled development of the period of 1848-1871, when the affairs of the United States, England, Ireland and Canada became wonderously complicated, as a consequence of the ramification of Irish politics, The efforts of Irish emigrants to America to launch an independence movement at home, and, when this failed , to seek to establish an independent revolutionary Irish state carved out of part of Canada, is the substance of this book. Woven into the story of the intensely invovled question which aggravated the policy makers of four countries for years is a throrough account relating the conflict between two separate factions within the Fenian membership. The quarrels over leadership finances, and general strategy, and personality conflicts which raged within the ranks of this spirited group of Irish revolutionaries, are described here for the first time. Even more revealing is the substantial impact the Fenian activities had on domestic American politics., and particularly after the Civil War had additionally inflamed the temper of Americans toward England. The Fenian Movement is a useful addition to the sparse literature on an amazing episode. MABEL GREGORY WALKER earned the Docotor of Philosophy degree at the State University of Ohio at Columbus, after considerable study at the University of Illinois at Champaign, and worked with such formidable historians as Arthur C. Cole, Clarence W. Alvord and Evans R. Greene. She now resides in Port Orange, Florida.

HARRY ELMER BARNES, LEARNED CRUSADER: THE NEW HISTORY IN ACTION, Goddard (ed), Ralph Myles, Pub, Inc., 1968, hc no dj, 884p, boards minor scuffed bumped, text slight tanning, tight bind.SIGNED/INSCRIBED BY BARNES' WIFE (DAUGHTER?) TO HISTORIAN/CIVIL LIBERTARIAN/NEW DEALER ADMAN FOR THE DNC LYMAN GARBER AND HIS WIFE MARION: ".OUR GREAT, DELIGHTFUL AND WARM FRIENDS OF THESE MANY YEARS." BARNES WAS AN INFLUENTIAL PRACTITIONER OF THE "NEW HISTORY" OTHERWISE KNOWN AS "REVISIONISM" (NOT IN THE LENINIST/TROTSKYIST SENSE).OVER A DOZEN ESSAYS BY LEADING NEW HISTORIANS: LUNDBERG, SHALLOO, ROTHBARD, AND MORE.50.00 From the dj, 'What is happening to our incomparable common law?' Answering that question in this provocative book, Lyman A. Garber charges that members of his own legal fraternity - especially leaders of the judiciary in places of power - are working toward the eventual destruction of this nation as a nation based on law. Describing the United States as 'the world's most truly revolutionary concept of government,' Mr. Garber warns that in recent years high court justices have been 'releasing an ever-swelling flood of decisions that undermine the foundations on which this nation is built.' Mr. Garber has been active in state and national politics. Before World War II, during which he served as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he ran as Independent candidate for the House of Representative sin the 14th New York district and in 1936 was Director of Advertising for the Democratic National Committee. He is a member of the Beverly Hills, the Los Angeles County and American Bar Associations and the American Judicature Society.---20.00. Inscribed by Author(s).
