Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. A carefully-used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing moderate wear and minor cosmetic flaws. The DJ shows rubbing and consequent soiling to the panels; the price ($19.95) is unclipped. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo (8.55 x 5.85 x 1.15 inches) . Distinctive front cover photographic portrait of two young chinese women. Translated from the French by Leigh Hafney. Language: English. Weight: 15.7 ounces. Hardcover with DJ. Marguerite Duras (1914 1996) was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter, essayist, and experimental filmmaker. Her script for the film Hiroshima mon amour (1959) earned her a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Duras's early novels were fairly conventional in form, and were criticized for their "romanticism" by fellow writer Raymond Queneau; however, with Moderato Cantabile, she became more experimental, paring down her texts to give ever-increasing importance to what was not said. She was associated with the nouveau roman French literary movement, although she did not belong definitively to any one group. She was noted for her command of dialogue. Far more daring and truthful than any of her other novels, The North China Lover is a fascinating retelling of the dramatic experiences of Duras's adolescence that shaped her most famous work. Initially conceived as notes toward a screenplay for The Lover, this later novel, written toward the end of her life, emphasizes the tougher aspects of her youth in Indochina and possesses the intimate feel of a documentary. Both shocking and enthralling, the story Duras tells is "so powerfully imagined (or remembered) that it . . . Lingers like a strong perfume" (Publishers Weekly). Hailed by the French critics as a return to "the Duras of the great books and the great days, " it is a mature and complex rendering of a formative period in the author's life. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 231 pages.

paperback. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category tha…t encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Very Good+ in Wraps: shows a couple of small, rather faint and clearly stray pen marks at the fore-edge; two faint creases to the back-strip; just a touch of wear to the extremities; a former owner's name at the inside of the front cover; the binding is square and secure; th…e text is clean. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, the noted minor imperfections. Bright and clean. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo (7.25 x 4.75 x 1 inches) . Language: English. Weight: 13 ounces. Paperback. Howard Barker (born 1946) is a British playwright, screenwriter and writer of radio drama, painter, poet, and essayist, writing predominantly on playwriting and for the theatre. He is best known for his plays Scenes from an Execution, Victory, The Castle, The Possibilities (included in this volume) , The Europeans, Judith, and Gertrude The Cry. He is a founding member of, primary playwright for and stage designer for British theatre company The Wrestling School. Barker has coined the term "Theatre of Catastrophe" to describe a form of dramatic tragedy he has developed. Rejecting the widespread notion that an audience should share a single response to the events onstage, Barker works to fragment response, forcing each viewer to wrestle with the play alone. Barker's plays often explore violence, sexuality, the desire for power, human motivation and the limits of language. Barker's protagonists are conflicted, often perverse, and their motivations appear enigmatic. Rejecting the widespread notion that an audience should share a single response to the events onstage, Barker works to fragment response, forcing each viewer to wrestle with the play alone. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 399 pages.
