Paperback. Condizione: New. The eighth instalment in the series of albums by Thomas Mailaender devoted to amateur practices identified on the Web, Time Travellers brings together a set of images posted online showing strangers striking a pose in front of iconic paintings. Selected for their resemblance (sometimes a bit far-fetched), the models reenact the poses seen in the paintings and offer us a new way to look at the history of art.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Marina Gadonneix's work weaves a complex link between documentary and fiction through photographs of places given over to temporary neglect. The House That Burns Everyday recalls a fable whose story, in ashes, would no longer reach us. Marina Gadonneix has chosen to haunt a dummy house used by firemen to become familiar with fire and fighting it. In short, a room of fiction. Fire has raged, soon it will flare up again. In this interstice, Gadonneix collects these artificial ruins. From a distance, the spectator can cope with the worst. The worst, in this work, is always yet to come.

Hardback. Condizione: New. As a material for their photo collages and installations the French artists Elise Mazac and Robert Drowilal, known as the art duo Mazaccio and Drowilal, use popular images of contemporary culture that are intentionally torn from their usual context. With the help of diverse techniques, deliberately bright colors, and irony, the artists transform these images and question the conventional principles of artistic photography. The book "Paparazzi" is putting together celebrities photographs stolen by paparazzi rearranging in the book form through different collage, working on typography, colours and shapes accompanied by explicit titles "The Beach", "Bike Riding", "Surfing". By juxtaposing heterogeneous and often contradictory shots and blurring the boundaries between natural and artificial, Mazaccio and Drowilal provoke the viewer, who is doomed to balance on the verge of disgust and pleasure when confronted by the authors' extraordinary artistic experiment.

Paperback. Condizione: New. On the 18th of April 2013, Anouk Kruithof and two assistants went to Wall Street in New York City and built a temporary installation of 14 framed prints of different sizes on the edge of the city's pavement. The prints looked like pixelated monochromes, but were in fact illustrations blown up to a maximum size (3200% in Photoshop) of images found by using Google, searching the word "stress". Anouk Kruithof asked pedestrians to look at the installation and then had conversations about the pixelated monochromes, the meaning of this project and the potential interpretations of the work. Kruithof asked the people involved if they would like to buy a print, both engaging a commercial gesture and condemning the scarcity of the city dwellers encounterings. She sold 8 of the 14 prints bought by 7 participants when the day's rain warded off further efforts. Kruithof is not allowed to conduct monetary transactions, so that once a participant told her a price for the print, she actually gave it away for free, thus creating an imaginary sale.

Paperback. Condizione: New. BETTER FOOD FOR OUR FIGHTING MEN contains a selection of images, produced mostly in the 1970s and 1980s, from the archives of the U. S. Army's Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center near Boston, Massachusetts. The center is still operational today, and employs both military personnel and civilian contractors in its mission to improve the daily lives-and diets-of American soldiers. For the world's most formidable army, feeding the troops is fraught with logistical, psychological and food safety challenges. Bacteria is an enemy; supply chains are vital, intricate delivery systems. The goal is to provide sustenance and boost morale across the full range of terrain and troop configurations, from mess halls for the officers and selfservice buffets for the rank-and-file to battlefield canteens and survival rations for commandos behind enemy lines. Solving this logistical puzzle is like trying to stuff a square peg into a round hole: once you have devised ways to optimize the daily nutritional requirements of the bodies in question, you need to work out the best solutions for preserving and transporting the food, and still guarantee a minimum level of flavor to keep the soldiers happy. A glossary with 24 entries explains some of the acronyms used in the image captions, describes the staples of a typical soldier's diet and traces the new technologies that enabled the food industry to manufacture and supply those rations.

Hardback. Condizione: New. "59 Positions" is a 20-minute video, filmed in 1992 using a stationary camera in an empty, unadorned room with a concrete floor, consisting of fragments of actions each lasting just a few seconds, in which we glimpse the artist Erwin Wurm and his friends bundled up in sweaters, pants and shirts, seemingly oblivious to the usual purposes of these articles of clothing. Their bodies are contorted into ridiculous poses, under the influence of a strange choreography made up of motionless "objects" that tremble almost imperceptibly. Wurm thus aims to explore "whether a physical action can become a sculpture and if so, at what point the transition takes place. " By making use of looped sequences without movement, his aim was to find out if and when this transformation might happen. Wurm was so impressed by the visual force and immediacy of these curious anthropomorphic forms that he decided to create a series of colour photographs based on this video, thus reconnecting with this medium in which he had often worked in the 1980s. After "Self-Portrait as 47 Pickles", "59 Positions" is the second title in the series of artist's books by Erwin Wurm published by RVB Books.

Following an initial scouting phase, the landscapes were produced using an 8-by-10-inch view camera in dialogue with Alexandre Guirkinger. All of the participants printed contact sheets for their photographs and then wrote captions for them in their native languages.

After a year of research in the archives of the Vasarely Foundation in Aix en Provence, Oran Hoffmann has appropriated the original materials of the large-scale works of the artist Victor Vasarely. He insulated the ceramic tiles, the aluminum pieces and the sheets of paper and then photographed each of these elements separately. Thus he frees himself from the spectacular dimension of the works of Vasarely, we unveil behind the scenes and leads us to the genesis of their creation. With his minimal photographic compositions Oran Hoffmann explores the world of Vasarely and also develops a contemporary interpretation.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Jones, Gabriel (illustratore). Since 2008, Gabriel Jones has played with the codes of voyeurism in his photographs - never interacting directly with his subjects, who are always unaware they're being observed. The images in his series Splashes are characteristic of this approach: here, the focus is always on the "backdrop". Over the course of several evenings, the photographer invited friends to pretend to pose for him - which allowed him to "steal" the situations taking place behind them. The photographs, taken with early cellphone cameras, have, for the most part, been reframed, so as to show only the situations and compositions that originally interested the artist. This tight cropping resulted in highly pixelated images, which the artist sometimes retouched to further accentuate the strangeness of the scenes he "collects. ".

Paperback. Condizione: New. The work Two Donkeys in a War Zone finds its source in a video of the U. S. Army available on Youtube. A drone follows an attack against an Isis camp. Between two explosions, the infrared camera briefly highlights two donkeys. This intrusion of two animals unintentionally witnessing human violence had me look for drone strike videos produced by the U. S. , Afghan or British army with moments or details that do not belong to the combat but are instead a part of ' normal life ', the off- camera's of an asymmetrical war. These photographs of operative videos, supporting military propaganda, show the conflict through the drone's eye. The operator is only looking for his target, but life carries on next to the explosion. These movements, instants of existence, signify humanity. Two donkeys in a war zone is a search, by cropping and subverting operative images, for traces of life inside pictures of death.

Paperback. Condizione: New. In this new publication, Tiane Doan na Champassak works on his own collection of Parkett, a seminal art magazine issued between 1984 and 2017. His subtle approach consists of isolating a considerable amount of double-spreads displaying gallery advertisements, all from the first five years of Parkett. Coherent in style and form, these ads are works of art in their own right, reflecting the supremacy of text over image in the conceptual production of those years. In their simple yet sophisticated appeal, they trace an alternative history of postmodern and contemporary art, marking the recurrence of certain artists - such as Marcel Broodthaers, Michael Heizer, Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor, and Cindy Sherman, among many others - in the galleries' landscape of the 1980s.

Paperback. Condizione: New. In this subtle sequel of his rearrangement of the Thai adult magazine "Siam's Guy", Tiane Doan na Champassak revisits a number of issues from the iconic magazine "Paris-Hollywood", launched in France in the 1940s. In the middleof its pages, the original magazine had the particularity of offering pin-ups in relief or on tracing paper that the readers could undress. By using his extensive arsenal of postmodern tools, Doan na Champassak cannibalizes the original content with his own photographs, creating a hypnotic dialogue between then and now, recto-verso, dressed-undressed, Bangkok-Paris, Paris-Hollywood. In addition, the alternation between censoring the genitalia and hiding the identity adds a thought-provoking rhythm to the whole.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Gone Fishing tells the modern tale, through the form of a fictional correspondence, of a young man who prefers to go on holidays with his mates rather than bow to his new responsibilities as a father. As the letters progress, Thomas Mailaender paints the unflattering portrait of an adolescent, Ulysses, more inspired by beer, big-game fishing and table-tennis than by the joys of fatherhood. Each of the nineteen letters is illustrated by a portrait of the young father carrying out an appallingly banal exploit that is supposed to excuse his absence. These images are photomontages the artist has made from amateur photos he collected on the internet.

Famed for restoring historic properties, Belmond luxury?hotel group is now collaborating with world-leading contemporary photographers to create bodies of work responding to their destinations, carefully pairing each artist with the personality of the chosen hotel. Coco Capitán photographed the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in spring 2023 and winter 2024.Coco Capitán doesn't like planes. Instead, she loves nothing more than classical forms of transportation - sailboats, yachts, vintage cars and, of course, the archetypal train journey. So when Capitán was invited to photograph the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express - with its original 1920s carriages and historic routes throughout Europe - she couldn't say no. While on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Capitán took the most instinctive approach, that of a curious traveller taking a trip with friends. Within the series, the relationship Capitán has built with the staff is interchangeable with the existing bond with her friends who join her on the journey. Images fluctuate from playful snapshots to thoughtful moments of contemplation.Capitán's photographs and the series title remind us that, amongst the glamour, the pilgrimage is just as important as the destination. Each minute should be treasured, no matter how silly or trivial it can feel, because this new reality is fleeting, and will soon belong to someone else.

After studying several destinations, the artist turned her attention to one of the most photographed cities, and found numeroussites and monuments that feed an uninterrupted flow of images. The Swiss artist transforms the raw material she works with: standardized snapshots of hyper-frequented places that feed social networks. Her images, which reveal nothing of the considerable work involved in their creation (archive research, crowdsourcing and collage), question our collective memory and tourist behavior. Paperback. Condizione: New. SUMER is a striking collaboration between photographer Óscar Monzón and writer Arthur Larrue. Bringing image and text together on equal terms, the book blends a powerful photographic series with a dystopian narrative set in a hyper-connected world-city shaped by highways, flows, and consumer culture. Through the marginal figures of Óscar and Gabrielle, the project explores themes of exclusion, control, and desire. Combining strong visual storytelling with a compelling literary voice, SUMER offers a distinctive and immersive reading experience at the crossroads of photography, fiction, and contemporary social critique.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Noémie Goudal is inspired by theories developed in the field of geology, which aim to explain how mountains were formed. Scientists were particularly intrigued by whether natural formations were the result of mathematical theorems. The Dismantlements series explores this question from a unique perspective. While we are accustomed to viewing landscapes as something entirely fixed, they are, in reality, in perpetual motion. Even massive rocks, which appear to be frozen in time, have been transformed through various geological processes. Noémie Goudal photographed a mountain, printed it on water-soluble paper (which dissolves on contact with water), and then adhered it to a transparent tarp, cutting along the edges of the mountain to create a reproduction approximately two meters wide. She then positioned this reproduction in front of another mountain, or more generally in front of a landscape. Through the effect of perspective, the reduced mountain blends seamlessly into the landscape.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The Balmuccia fault, situated in Italy, is a thin line of glass formed during an earthquake which occured millions years ago, several kilometers underground and eventually surfaced during the formation of the Alps. This bearly visible line is studied by Alexandre Schubnel and his team from the Geology Laboratory of Paris Ecole Normale Supérieure (France). This series of images completed in 2015 is the result of the photographer's collaboration with the scientists to produce a precise mapping of the fault, as well as proposing a personal, visual extension of the story. The Fault is the second chapter of a photographic trilogy on physical science, started in 2010 with astrophysics (A Black Matter, published in 2012 by Journal/F93). It will end in 2017 with a final chapter covering the field of glaciology.

In a context of contemporary warfare, drones are increasingly used as tools and machines for control, surveillance, and repression, becoming more and more technologically sophisticated. Through a selection of images collected from various channels, active in most modern conflicts (Syria, Libya, Mali, Central Africa and Ukraine), the book questions the ways war is represented. Where journalistic images are often framed, if not suppressed, by the belligerents and tend to lose relevance, they are gradually being replaced by these machine-produced images. The book brings together documentary images on which the author intervenes only minimally. It is not question of creation here but more on how representing reality.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The British visual artist Steve Harries explores the force and fragility of our environment. In his book Octopus, he turns his attention more specifically to mountain landscapes and their glaciers. Over the last ten years, Harries has produced a corpus of photographs of mountains around the world, inspired in particular by the geological processes behind their formation and their morphological features. His experience with still life photography has also inspired him to hone in on certain geological details. Recently, his discovery of Marianne Moore's poem "An Octopus" (1924) changed how he views his own photographs, prompting him to organize them differently. He has therefore put together a more freely composed sequence, emulating Moore's approach by overlaying images created in differing ways and instilling a bold formal dialogue that encourages a new appreciation of mountain landscapes.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Discovered in the Ardèche region of southern France in 1994, the Chauvet cave is an important site for the history of humankind, as much for the technical and aesthetic qualities of the ancient paintings on its walls as for the other artefacts found in the cave's chambers. One of the oldest painted caves in the world, it has been closed to the public since its discovery and remains to this day an object of fascination for people everywhere, marking a major turning point in parietal art and in the history of the first modern humans. By venturing deep into heart of this unique paleolithic site, Philippe Durand takes up a considerable artistic challenge. The cave presents itself as a closed universe, a quantifiable set of signs within a spectacular natural architecture, a place where time seems to stand still. Durand purposefully distances himself from objective representations, in order to offer a more intimate, more subjective window into the cave and its art. To achieve this, he combines colour filters with multiple exposure techniques. Durand thus defines a space of creation and non-objective representation, one able to focus the attentions of each viewer in a different way. Rather than working with colour in a realist mode, he uses it to suggest an element of information or a specific code, as in astronomical or microscopic photography. Durand unearths the original idea of a cave of dreams and imagination, leading us on a psychedelic journey through one of the world's most celebrated sites for prehistoric art. Born in Paris in 1963, Philippe Durand was the winner of the second Chauvet cave photography competition. The book is the result of his privileged access to the original cave for a series of private visits, each giving rise to an unforgettable photography session.

Clément Lambelet gets interested in process of facial automatic recognition and reflects upon its generalisation regarding to its development in every social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat). For the book Happiness is the only true emotion, he worked on a panel of portraits given by the Pain Express Set from Stirling University in Scotland, he selected one emotion per person, reframed images and saved only the face. The artist manipulated each photograph and worked on its materiality to get more expressive images. These portraits become a vector of emotion. Each picture is then submitted to the Microsoft Cognitive Emotion API challenging the accuracy of these systems. The Emotion API only recognises Happiness with certitude.

Hardback. Condizione: New. 1st.
