This book helps readers to become better, more confident teachers of mathematics by enabling them to focus critically on what they know and what they do in the classroom. Building on their close observation of primary mathematics classrooms, the authors provide those starting out in the teaching profession with a four-stage framework which acts as a tool of support for developing their teaching: - making sense of foundation knowledge - focusing on what teachers know about mathematics - transforming knowledge - representing mathematics to learners through examples, analogies, illustrations and demonstrations - connection - helping learners to make sense of mathematics through understanding how ideas and concepts are linked to each other - contingency - what to do when the unexpected happens Each chapter includes practical activities, lesson descriptions and extracts of classroom transcripts to help teachers reflect on effective practice. Highly acclaimed in its First Edition for its practical and sensitive approach, Counselling for Depression is an insightful guide to depression and the essential interpersonal skills and techniques which can be used in counselling the depressed person. Taking account of new developments in the field, the Second Edition has been fully updated and features an additional chapter on interventions. Paul Gilbert examines the inherent features - a sense of failure, abandonment, powerlessness, shame and guilt - and highlights the fragility and negativity of the depressive state. Using illustrations and case examples, he traces the steps appropriate at different stages in the counselling process and shows how the counsellor can help clients to change and to cope independently, by managing the whole method of change for themselves. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. `In her book, Marjorie Boxall makes an eloquent case for establishing nurture provision. Her book would be invaluable for teachers, governors and other interested parties in helping them to provide more appropriately for such children - Young Minds Magazine `This book should be essential reading for Government ministers. The author pioneered the setting up of nurture groups in Inner London in the early 1970s as a response to social deprivation and its consequences for children in school. The book describes why and how, drawing on those early experiences and later projects in the London Borough of Enfield. It is salutary to note that the concept of nurture group is now well over thirty years old and as yet there are still very few of them in existence. Hopefully Marjorie Boxalls book will help to change this situation. As she says: Our capital of good nurture is diminishing fast and the fabric of society is at risk, for with each generation there are fewer peopleto provide good nurturing, and more children who have been deprived of it. Nurture groups provide children with social and emotional experiences that are necessary as a pre-requisite for formal school learning. Marjorie Boxall describes how such children are functionally below the age of three, due to having missed out on essential experiences, which are normally provided through mothering. Adults who work in a nurture group setting provide a variety of structured experiences: for example, how to play with toys, how to share a meal, so that the children catch up on their social and emotional development and can then rejoin mainstream education. This is a very practical and readable book that serves as a comprehensive introduction to the subject. This book is a bible for nurture group enthusiasts and should be essential reading for anybody who has the desire to make a significant impact in the area of social change. Copies, please, to Tony Blair, Estelle Morris and to every Chief Education Officer in the United Kingdom. They ignore it at their peril - Nurturing Potential `Marjorie is the originator of nurture groups. Her book is full of wisdom about the work of nurture groups, why people do what they do, how to think about the situation children are in and what nurture group staff can do about it. This is an authoritative practice manual, clearly informed by years of reflective practice and experience. Insights into childhood and school life abound. If your main interest is as a practitioner or directly supporting those who work with children, you will find it full of interest and richness. Marjories book fills the gap between theory and the reality of doing the job. Applied psychology at its best. An essential addition to the nurture group bookcase - Marion Bennathan, Director, Nurture Group Network This powerful and immensely positive book describes the rationale and practice of nurture groups for children who cannot cope with the demands of mainstream primary school - Jennie Lindon, Nursery World `If your school is thinking of setting up a nurture group, this book is clearly essential reading. It is also likely, however, to be of interest to a wider readership, especially since a commitment to social inclusion is at the heart of current policy on early education and childcare in Britain - Margaret Bryson, International Journal of Early Years Education `This book is not only a useful resource to the NG practitioner; it is also a document that tells us a lot about what of value has been all but lost from the educational agenda in recent years, and more importantly, something about one of the ways we might go about restoring the loss. The emphasis throughout is on dealing with pupils as whole persons. This involves meeting the pupils on their own terms and acknowledging and meeting their needs, with particular emphasis on the emotional underpinning of effective early learning - Paul Cooper, Early Years Nurture groups are increasingly recognized as an effective method for schools needing to help children who show emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The groups are effective for children whose early development has been hindered by adverse circumstances, providing the learning experiences usually bound into a close relationship with an attentive and responsive parent or carer. This book gives an inside view of nurture groups in action, and shows how childrens skills and concepts develop, and how their self-esteem grows, as well as their disposition to care about others. Essential reading for schools thinking of setting up a nurture group, this book deals with preparation, and the issues involved, the organization of the group within the school, and its relationships outside the school. In addition the author sets out guiding principles of assessment, selection and monitoring of children; as well as practical details of the facilities and equipment needed. This book will be helpful to school managers, SENCOs educational psychologists and teachers, as well as teachers and therapists working with children with special needs of all kinds. Marjorie Boxall originated nurture groups and is a founder member of the Nurture Group Network, which runs accredited courses at Cambridge, Leicester and London universities. She is the author, with Marion Bennathan, of Effective Intervention in Primary Schools and The Boxall Profile: Handbook for Teachers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This is a book for those who want to find more, to broaden their own perceptions and understanding of inclusion and to base their own practice on research, and as such would interest and inform any practitioner from managers to students.- Early Years Update This text is a must buy for anyone interested in inclusive education in the early years A particular strength of the book is the way in which the everyday experiences of children, parents and practitioners are discussed in relation to educational theory Perhaps the greatest strength of the book though, lies in the way that ideas are based on research findings are presented so clearly. It will almost certainly be nominated for this years NASEN/TES academic book award and deservedly so - SENCO Update Refreshingly, in this book, inclusion is not about a narrow group of students defined as special but about increasing the participation of everybody involved in early years settings. It is about reducing the exclusion of all children, their families and communities. It is also about the practitioners who work with them, whose involvement in decisions in their own workplace is critical if they are to support the participation of children. It is rich with experience, from the UK and internationally, building up an understanding of education from stories of encounters with children and their families. This book will help readers to escape from the confines of considering children, and the difficulties they encounter, through the constricting and distorting lens of special educational needs - Tony Booth, Professor of Inclusive and International Education Canterbury Christ Church University Fascinating reading . bound to inform discussions and encourage early years practicioners to develop and reflect on their own practices . I will be recommending this book to colleagues and adding it to my essential reading list for students - Nursery World A very helpful book which both challenges and informs. [It] brings together important evidence to help us find a positive way forward - Early Education Well-written and accessible. The book is rich with the reported experiences and ideas of educators and provides clear pointers for further research and discussion. It will serve as an excellent stimulus for educators in any early-years setting who are seeking to develop their own agreed philosophy and inclusive practices - Support For Learning By identifying and discussing key research studies on inclusion in the early years, and drawing on studies of practitioners views and experiences of working inclusively, this insightful text shows how practices in a range of early years settings can be influenced by the attitudes and responses of adults in those settings. The authors argue for a broad definition of inclusion, not limited to those with learning difficulties or impairment, but addressing factors affecting all members of the learning community. Key factors which can make inclusion successful are highlighted, including curriculum and pedagogy, professional development and work with parents. The book shows how working inclusively involves all members of the setting community, and presents a number of original stories (generated from a recent research project carried out by the authors) of how the lives of practitioners, parents and children have been affected by inclusive and non- inclusive practices. This is an essential text for all early years students, practitioners and researchers who want to become familiar with current research into inclusion and to develop ways of drawing on such studies to inform and develop their own inclusive practices. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

This original analysis of the creation of new state forms critically examines the political forces that enabled `more and better management to be presented as a solution to the problems of the welfare state in Britain. Examining the micro-politics within public service, the authors draw links between politics, policies and organizational power to present an incisive and dynamic account of the restructuring of social welfare. Clarke and Newman expose the tensions and contradictions in the managerial state and trace the emergence of new dilemmas in the provision of public services. They show that these problems are connected to the recurring difficulties in defining `the public that receives these services. In particular they question whether the reinvention of the public as either a nation of consumers or a nation of communities can effectively address the implications of social diversity. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. `The book is an excellent read as it provides both ideas and suggestions to empower leaders in the education system. Increasingly, more and more academics write for each other and not for the practitioners who lead our schools, so this is a refreshing book. In an era of some anti-leadership books it is refreshing to read ideas that build bridges to practitioners in order to improve schools. The book is an outstanding contribution to the resource base for leaders in schools and the wider education system - Professor Brent Davies, International Journal of Education Management `Michael Fullans books - and this is no exception - are for educational policy makers, practitioners and researchers what J K Rowlings Harry Potter books are for children and parents. This is one of the best and most useful - Tim Brighouse `Michael Fullan has produced another powerful and inspirational book. He has the wonderful knack of continually positioning himself a couple of steps ahead of the fields. By so doing, he is able to challenge and lead thinking and thereby accelerate productive new developments - David Hopkins, Royal Holloway University of London `An ambitious and provocative journey into the complexities and possibilities that arise when leadership and sustainability join - Roland S Barth, Lessons Learned (Corwin Press 2003) `No one has contributed more to our understanding of leadership and change than Michael Fullan. Leadership & Sustainability continues that tradition - a brilliant analysis of a timely topic - Thomas J Sergiovanni, Lillian Radford Professor of Education, Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas `Efforts at education reform have taken us down a variety of paths, and Michael Fullan has consistently noted the importance of leadership to large-scale reform. In his latest book, Leadership & Sustainability, Fullan makes a solid case that such reform is a complex process involving many variables. Key among these variables is the relationship between leadership and sustainability - Vincent L Ferrandino, Executive Director, National Association of Elementary School Principals. Alexandria, Vancouver `With knowledgeable savvy from both individual leadership and system transformation, and a knack for writing in "plain-speak," Michael Fullan helps us understand that it will be "leadership" (not leaders) that pave the way for great sustainability. His attempt to link abstract concepts to concrete examples of what it looks like in practice was successful - Theodore B Creighton, Director, Center for Research and Doctoral Studies, Sam Houston State University, Executive Director, National Council of Professors of Education Administration `Michael Fullan has gone beyond his past research that described the change process so insightfully to a new and exciting exploration of how systems thinking and the "long lever of leadership" can bring about deep and lasting reforms in schools and schooling. This brand of leadership for sustainability, as described by Fullan, results in the "deep learning" that enables schools to respond successfully to the revolution in expectations they now face. This new work will both inform and inspire educators to become the "new theoreticians" whose impact will be felt in their schools every day - David T Conley, Associate Professor, Educational Leadership and Policy, Director, Center for Educational Policy Research, College of Education, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon `Leadership & Sustainability is a critical breakthrough. Michael Fullan has utilized findings from some of the best research and observations in education over the past fifteen years to brilliantly illuminate the challenges of creating schools capable of continuous organic change and improvement - James P Comer, Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut Leadership & Sustainability will examine how the opportunity for new leadership can be leveraged to focus on sustainability of reform, and will identify barriers and strategies for moving in new directions. This book will define the meaning of "sustainability" and the large scale it plays in reform. It explains the myriad facets of continuous improvement and the key characteristics of the dynamics in sustainability. This book explores the two-way street relationship between individual leadership and system transformation. It will explain how each must feed on each other in order for the relationship to succeed. It is best seen alongside the supervisor, as a guide, through the multidimensional sea of academic literature - British Educational Research Journal Reviewing the literature for a research project can seem a daunting, even overwhelming task. New researchers, in particular, wonder: Where do I start? What do I do? How do I do it? Chris Hart offers invaluable advice on how to: search out existing knowledge on a topic; analyse arguments and ideas; map ideas, arguments and perspectives; produce a literature review; and construct a case for investigating a topic. The history of audience research tells us that the relationship between the media and viewers, readers and listeners is complex and requires multiple methods of analysis. In Understanding Audiences, Andy Ruddock introduces students to the range of quantitative and qualitative methods and invites his readers to consider the merits of both. Understanding Audiences: demonstrates how - practically - to investigate media power; places audience research - from early mass communication models to cultural studies approaches - in their historical and epistemological context; explores the relationship between theory and method; concludes with a consideration of the long-running debate on media effects; includes exercises which invite readers to engage with the practical difficulties of conducting social research. Condizione: Very Good. `An excellent overview of the development in thinking about play, based on research into different aspects of play. This book enables the reader to not only access, and engage with developing theories and ideas, but also provides practical ideas and examples that have been tried and tested in the classroom. This book should be compulsory reading for every teacher of young children who are interested in developing their practice to provide a stimulating, active and playful environment with their children in which effective learning and positive attitudes are developed - Bernadette Hancock, Headteacher of Christ the King Primary School, Cardiff `One of the major strengths of the book is that it makes some complex theory highly accessible to its audience. This makes it an excellent introductory book for use on inservice and undergraduate programs - Sue Rogers, Institute of Education `This book aims to improve the quality of play in "educational" settings. It will be valuable for a wide range of practitioners - Nursery World `In this new and updated edition of an outstanding book, Wood and Attfield once again demonstrate how young children make meaning, and construct knowledge, through play. They combine an informed discussion of the ideological tradition of the early childhood pioneers, which continues to underpin most contemporary provision, with a refreshing openness to the new insights provided by recent research, and the new opportunities offered by the Foundation Stage era. Their unrivalled explanation of the links between theorists, such as Vygotsky, and classroom provision for play, is now expanded through considerations of recent findings in neuroscience, and a renewed awareness of the sociocultural contexts of childhood, as well as by studies which acknowledge the importance of boisterous, rough-and-tumble, play activities for childrens development. And throughout, they remind readers and practitioners of the important distinction between play as a spontaneous activity of children (play as such), and the play which educators offer as a medium for learning - Elizabeth Brooker, Course Leader: MA in Childhood Studies, Institute of Education This book provides a thorough and up-to-date overview of the topical issue of teaching and learning through play. Chapters cover issues including assessment through play, the role of adults in childrens play, the impact of play on social and emotional learning and how to develop a whole-school approach to learning through play. .This book is theoretical and detailed but extremely interesting and there is certainly practical information to be found in it - Early Talk This timely Second Edition explores recent developments which strongly endorse play as an integral part of the curriculum. The content has been fully revised to reflect contemporary thinking about the role and value of play in early childhood and beyond. A key focus is the provision of a secure theoretical and practical grounding for developing a pedagogy of play. In the first section, the authors provide an overview of recent developments in education policies, and reviews of research into different aspects of play. In the second section, the emphasis is on classroom practice, specifically: organizing and developing play with particular reference to the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1; establishing progression and continuity with Key Stage 1; assessing childrens learning through play; the role of adults in childrens play; using the plan-do-review approach to integrate child-initiated and adult-directed play; the importance of socio-dramatic play for childrens social and emotional learning; and developing a whole-school play ethos. This book enables practitioners to create unity between play, learning and teaching, and to improve the quality of childrens learning. New material provided by practitioners has been added, to show how this unity can be successfully achieved. This is an essential text for students of education. It is highly recommended to those undertaking degrees in Childhood Studies and those on Initial Teacher Training programmes in early years and primary education. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Praise for the Second Edition: `Since the first edition I have recommended this text to many of my students (undergraduates and postgraduates) who, like Derek Haylocks own, evidenced more positive attitudes towards mathematics as a result. If the text is not on your required reading, it is, in my view, that it should, at the very least, be highly recommended - Scottish Educational Review `This Second Edition has been brought bang up to date, covering all the maths primary teachers are required to know. Many offerings claim to do this, several bearing the imprimatur of the Teachers Training Agency. This one does not, because, the author explains he has declined to submit it for the "approval" of government agencies. But this is the one I would choose because of its friendly and clear explanations. While always mathematically correct, it never feels "mathematical". The author never makes the reader feel inadequate, just as we would wish to treat children. I can think of no higher praise - Laurie Rousman for Times Educational Supplement `This new edition of Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers which, incidentally, has slightly larger pages and a clearer layout than the earlier edition, is not just a confidence booster, a gap-plugger and a destroyer of misconception. Nor is it primarily a handbook: it has a plain index, no glossary and scarcely any remarks on "how to use the book". Much more importantly, its a lucid and coherent embodiment of the wisdom of a highly experienced mathematics educator - a book to be returned to again and again, by anyone involved in teaching mathematics at this level - Mathematics in Schools Includes a CD-rom! Derek Haylocks highly acclaimed and comprehensive guide effectively equips teachers with the confidence to explain mathematical ideas and procedures to pupils in ways that will deepen their understanding and enhance their development in the subject. This expanded Third Edition has been thoroughly updated, with new examples and references. It now covers all requirements of The National Curriculum for Primary Schools, the requirements for Initial Teacher Training, and The National Numeracy Strategy, and includes: " An expanded chapter on mathematical reasoning " Detailed explanations based on frequently asked questions " Teaching points distributed throughout the text " Summaries of relevant research findings " Self assessment questions to aid self study " Annotated suggestions for further reading " A useful glossary of mathematical terms in each chapter. The new edition also includes a fantastic bonus CD with useful check-ups from Derek Haylocks Numeracy for Teaching, as well as a full glossary of the mathematical terms used in the new edition of Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. This book is the essential guide to primary maths for ages 5-11. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. `This is an accessible and clearly set-out book, with a consistently positive and empowering tone. The examples and level of the material are realistic and likely to promote discussion, which is skilfully handled, would lead to a more consistent approach - European Journal of Special Needs `Trying to know something about everything is a tall order, but this book can ease the burden considerably if you feel the teaching assistants (or any staff in your school) would benefit from help and advice on behaviour management. This is just the thing for a busy SENCO, although, as a special needs adviser, I can already see how I might use and adapt some of the excellent resources and activity ideas to add sparkle to my own centre - and school-based training - British Journal of Special Education `The resource is designed for SENCOs/trainers who work with TAs and it really does hit its target audience, striking a good balance between the SENCOs need for comprehensive coverage of the material and the TAs need for an accessible training and developmental experience. In addition, there are clearly potential applications for (perhaps slightly tweaked) elements of the resource with other teaching, and non-teaching, staff in schools. The resource costs 16.99, which works out at just 2.50 per unit. Setting aside the real value of the resource in terms of the improved behaviour-management performance of our TAs and other school staff, the value to the SENCO/trainer of having a comprehensively packaged resource which includes so much useful material and which requires little, if any, tweaking before being presented to its target audience in the individual school, is vastly greater than what is, essentially, just the price of a pint of beer per unit - Spare-Chair `According to the SENCO in the school where I work: "Its just what Ive been looking for! All the work has been done for me, where can I buy one?". This book is well laid out, easy to access and simple to understand- Teaching Assistant News `This book provides a clear structure for the SENCO to deliver in-school training on behaviour managementEach unit offers suggestions for practical school-based follow-up work that TAs can undertake. It would be a useful support to SENCOs who are planning training. Brendan Cunnane, Teaching and Learning Consultant for KS3 Behaviour and Attendance notes that: (the book) "chimes fully with the messages of the KS2 pilot on developing SEBS (Social, Emotional and Behavioural Skills) and the KS3 B & A Strand. Good exercises and strategies which are clearly explained. A good practical compendium with theoretical underpinnings" - East Riding Teaching Assistant News `The materials are comprehensive and thought-provoking. They deal with the issues of behaviour management at an individual, team and school level and the participant activities provided are at once engaging and insightful - TA Help Website Developed from training courses run by the authors for SENCOs and teaching assistants, this book provides a clear structure for the SENCO to deliver in-school training on behaviour management to teaching assistants and other school staff. The emphasis is on planning for a team approach to problem solving within the context of whole-school improvement. The book is split up into a series of units that are designed to develop awareness and understanding through shared training. Each unit offers suggestions for practical school-based follow-up work that the teaching assistant can undertake and provides materials to allow the teaching assistant to maintain a reflective log of their work to support their professional development. The authors: - place their material in the context of the increasingly managerial role SENCOs are undertaking with their teaching assistants - take into account the proposed development of the role of the teaching assistant as outlined in recent DfES guidance - provide the SENCO with all training materials - photocopiable worksheets, suggested aims and objectives, discussion topics, tasks and activities. The units offer a flexible training programme that schools can tailor to their individual needs and everything is written in a highly practical and user-friendly style. SENCOs should find it an invaluable training tool for use with teaching assistants and other school staff. It is suitable for use at both primary and secondary level. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The Second Edition of this best-selling text offers students and first-time researchers invaluable guidance on the practice of qualitative social research. Throughout the author addresses the key issues which need to be identified and resolved in the qualitative research process, and through which researchers develop essential skills in qualitative research. The book highlights the "difficult questions" that researchers should get into the habit of asking themselves in the course of doing qualitative research, and outlines the implications of the different ways of responding to these questions. The new edition of Qualitative Researching has been fully revised and updated with expanded coverage of observation, documents, visual data, CAQDAS, and writing qualitative research. The text bridges the gap between "cookbook" approaches to qualitative research and abstract methodogical approaches. Helping the reader to move comfortably between principle and practice, this text has proved to be an invaluable introduction to qualitative research, and a useful aid to accomplished qualitative research practice across the social sciences. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

For those interested in developing their own projects in this field it will provide essential information. It contains many examples of work carried out this in this project. Many examples are given that could prompt practitioners to identify ways in which they too could focus their own input with children or help their parent group to interact with their childrens developing literacy - Early Years Update `A "must read" for practitioners, policy makers and researchers interested in the detail and the theory underpinning this important family literacy initiative - Neil McClelland OBE, Director, National Literacy Trust `The REAL Project is one of the best conceptualized, most intensively documented and successful British family literacy initiatives and the book provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of this powerful project. It is essential reading for anyone working alongside families to promote childrens early development - Professor Nigel Hall, Institute of Education, Manchester Metropolitan University The project described in detail in this book is arguably the most important and well-researched UK initiative for developing early literacy work with parents of young children. . Readers will find inspirational case studies . There are illuminating insights into childrens perspectives on family literacy, including good news about fathers and boys. . Dont miss it! - Marian Whitehead, Nursery World Anyone involved in the field of early-childhood literacy should be familiar with the work of the REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) Project. Here, leading members of the project team Cathy Nutbrown, Peter Hannon and Anne Morgan, discuss the research. An essential guide to the subject, this book will be of great practical use to all in the field of early childhood literacy: students, practitioners and course leaders on literacy and early childhood courses. The authors discuss the policy contexts of early-childhood and literacy today and use their experience of the REAL project to discuss and illustrate practical research and evaluation strategies for family literacy workers. They examine the issues from all perspectives: teachers, parents and young children. The book embodies a timely collection of restorative justice topics and is well structured with some of the most learned authorities in the field - Magistrate The team which teaches the Open Universitys Crime Order and Social Control course has long been publishing teaching materials which are gratefully purloined by colleagues elsewhere for use in their own courses. In producing this book they have gone much further than this: not only have they selected an indispensable range of mainly previously published readings, they have also placed them in a theoretical context and succinctly summarised the debates which are taking place and some which need to take place but as yet are in their infancy - Vista Restorative Justice brings together key international writings that trace the development of restorative justice from its diverse beginnings to current global policies and practices. The collection is constructed around the following themes:the theoretical origins of restorative justice; the key principles and substantive practices associated with restorative justice; controversial issues and debates; and future directions and possibilities. A substantial editorial introduction will provide readers with an authorative guide to the critical issues facing restorative justice at the beginning of the 21st century.
