Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Sister Wendy Beckett is one of the best-known art historians in the world today. In "Joy Lasts", she explores her reactions to a painting that she finds uniquely compelling: the haunting Christ on the Cross by El Greco. As she candidly admits, "I have always had a difficulty in talking about rel…igious art." This surprising admission leads her to examine the very nature of religious and spiritual art, which, Sister Wendy argues, are not at all the same things. In the course of her discussion, she takes a careful look at fourteen works by artists ranging from anonymous medieval masters to Paul Cezanne, in whose still life's she finds the expression of a deep spirituality. The art of Correggio, Rubens, Millet, and others helps Sister Wendy arrive at a new understanding of just why it is that this particular El Greco painting speaks to her so profoundly. "Joy Lasts" is a remarkable personal statement from one of the best-loved contemporary guides to the meaning and experience of art. Sister Wendy Beckett is internationally known for her books and televised art series. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The artist and scientist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was born in Frankfurt, Germany, into a middle-class family of publishers and artists. With her meticulous depictions of insect metamorphosis, she raised the standards of natural history illustration and helped give birth to the field… of entomology. At the age of fifty-two, Merian traveled with her younger daughter to Suriname, a Dutch territory in South America, to paint its exotic flora and fauna. Many of the drawings produced by Merian in the South American jungle were later published as hand-colored engravings in her book Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname (1705), which brought her widespread fame. A copy of the second edition is held in the collections of the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute. Insects and Flowers, a delightful gift book that reproduces vivid color details of sixteen plates from the Getty's copy, is a vibrant encapsulation of Merian's book and features an engaging essay on Merian's life and work as well as an insect and plant identification guide. An exhibition of Merian's work will be on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from June 10 through August 31, 2008. Between 1699-1701, Maria Sibylla Merian travelled to the Dutch colony of Suriname in South America to study the area's unique flora and fauna. Many of the drawings and painting she produced on this trip were published in her "Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname" (1705). This volume reproduces details of sixteen plates from that volume. Aggiungi al carrelloPaper wrappers. Condizione: A fine copy. As new. First edition. 96 pp. Illus. with b/w photos. 8vo. A series of the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities. Photographs by Dennis Keeley; preface by Kurt W. Forster. Translation of: "Non-city" revisited. "From Alex de Tocqueville to Jean Baudrillard-Europeans have b…een fascinated with the idea and the reality of the United States. They have seen in America a difference that, whether provoking or complimentary, has furthered American self-understanding. Looking for a City in America is another chapter in this tradition. The eminent European historian Andre Corboz takes to task previous European analyses of the American city, suggesting they are often little more than reflections of an Old World bad faith. Centering his critical eye on the terrain of postmodern Los Angeles, Corboz makes the case for a new city, one without a center but united by what he sees as a typically American gregarious individualism. Corboz's essay is accompanied by eighty-three photographs of Los Angeles by photographer Dennis Keeley, whose arresting work discovers "moments that would otherwise go unnoticed." The city Keeley presents comprises a visually impressive Los Angeles-the L.A. of contemporary cultural theorists Fredric Jameson and Mike Davis-whose absent center validates its postmodern vision.".

The American architectural photographer Julius Shulman (19102009) is one of the few image makers to have documented, as well as witnessed, nearly an entire c…entury of Los Angeles history. His captivating photographs serve as a visual record of the dramatic evolution of this exciting and diverse metropolis. Shulmans best-known images consist of mid-century views of Modernist domestic interiors, notably the iconic Case Study House #22 of 1960, in which two well-dressed women sit inside the floor-to-ceiling window walls of a Pierre Koenigdesigned house that seems to float like a spaceship over the light-spangled urban sprawl beyond. Not as well known but equally powerful are Shulmans images of Union Station and downtowns vintage office buildings, the dynamic Wilshire Boulevard corridor, the regions eclectic coffee shops and movie theaters, the sweeping canopy of the Century Plaza Hotel, the diverse fabric of L.A.s residential neighborhoods, and the panoramic vistas of the city of the future under construction. The author selected sixty images from the Getty Research Institutes Shulman archive for this elegant book, for which he also wrote an informative essay on the photographers exceptional capacity to capture the diverse built environment of Los Angeles. Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Near Fine. DETAILS: large sewn PAPERBACK, attractive copy, near fine. FREEDBERG, DAVID / DE VRIES, JAN, 1943-, ed. . Art in history, history in art: studies in seventeenth-century Dutch culture. Santa Monica, CA: Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities, 1991, 1st printing number line ending…in 1, 444pp., . Series: Issues & debates Art in History/History in Art: Studies in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Culture considers the potential for a reciprocally illuminating relationship between art history and history in light of recent methodological developments in both fields. The volume opens with contributions from a historian and an art historian; they examine the weaknesses of an art history without a social or economic history and lay the groundwork for the ensuing discussions of how the procedures and methods of each discipline may serve the aims of the other. A wide critique of approaches to the interpretation of realism in Dutch pictures forms the second section of the book. Included are critical views of recent iconographic developments, as well as contributions by a plant taxonomist and a marine historian. In the volume's third section new statistical and numerical models for the study of Dutch art in Dutch society are presented by three economic historians. The concluding essay provides a constructive critique of existing methodologies within each field. Art in History/History in Art: Studies in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Culture offers the most secure basis to date for future work on the interaction between the two disciplines and between the content of pictures and the cultures that produce them. - CONTENTS: Art in history / Gary Schwartz -- History in art / J.W. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Zen art poses a conundrum. On the one hand, Zen Buddhism emphasizes the concept of emptiness, which among other things asserts that form is empty, that all phenomena in the world are illusory. On the other hand, a prodigious amount of artwork has been created in association with Zen thought… and practice. A wide range of media, genres, expressive modes, and strategies of representation have been embraced to convey the idea of emptiness. Form has been used to express the essence of formlessness, and in Japan, this gave rise to a remarkable, highly diverse array of artworks and a tradition of self-negating art. In this volume, Yukio Lippit explores the painting The Gourd and the Catfish (ca. 1413), widely considered one of the most iconic works of Japanese Zen art today. Its subject matter appears straightforward enough: a man standing on a bank holds a gourd in both hands, attempting to capture or pin down the catfish swimming in the stream below. This is an impossible task, a nonsensical act underscored by the awkwardness with which the figure struggles even to hold his gourd. But this impossibility is precisely the point. "This volume publishes Yukio Lippit's lecture of the same title, held at the Getty Center on 23 September 2014." Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. An intriguing look at secrecy during the Byzantine Empire and the role of the art historian in seeking truth. Secrecy has played a role throughout human history and continues to capture the popular imagination. Some of the most seductive aspects of the Byzantine Empiresuch as the relics of…the imperial palace and the military uses of Greek firehave been shrouded in mystery for centuries. This book provides a brief history of secrecy in Byzantium and examines the role of the art historian in uncovering the truth, demonstrating how visual evidence can not only reveal new findings but also purposely conceal answers. Art historians face many challenges in their search for hidden knowledge, including accessing accounts preserved in fragmentary glimpses and reconciling how practices of speculation and reconstruction result in different, and sometimes contradictory, understandings. With pressing urgency, this book asks scholars to consider their role in articulating the stories of marginalized people, particularly for queer and trans history. At the core of these investigations is the quest to discover how clandestine knowledge was transmitted and how relationships were strengthened by collective secret keeping, as well as how concealment is used as a strategy for exercising power. With insights into the religious, imperial, military, and cultural uses of secrecy, this book offers an intriguing look at the ways secrecy manifested itself during the Byzantine Empire and the implications it has for the issues we face today. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Explore the extensive imagery and fascinating stories of hundreds of Orthodox Christian icons and saints. An icon (from the Greek word eikon, "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced toda…y mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their paintersusually monksfollowed prescribed models from iconographic manuals. Featuring over 400 color images, this book catalogues the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This third volume in the Art through the Centuries series highlights the most noteworthy concepts, geographic centers, and artists of this turbulent century. Fourteenth-century Europe was ravaged by famine, war, and, most devastatingly, the Black Plague. These widespread crises inspired a m…ystical religiosity, which emphasized both ecstatic joy and extreme suffering, producing emotionally charged and often graphic depictions of the Crucifixion and the martyrdoms of the saints. While the great boom of cathedral building that had marked the previous century waned, cathedrals continued to serve as the centers of religious life and artistic creation. Wealthy patrons sponsored the production of elaborate altarpieces, as well as smaller panel paintings and religious statues for private devotional use. A growing literate elite created a demand for both richly decorated prayer books and volumes on secular topics. In Italy, the foremost Sienese painter, Duccio, sought to synthesize northern, Gothic influences with eastern, Byzantine ones, while the groundbreaking Florentine Giotto moved toward the depiction of three-dimensional figures in his wall paintings. Important facts about the subjects under discussion are summarized in the margins of each entry, and salient features of the illustrated artworks are identified and discussed. The effects of war and famine in Europe, in the 14th century, lead to a widespread mystical religiosity, which emphasised both joy and suffering. This in turn inspired the creation of some of the most magnificent religious art of the period. This illustrated work highlights the most important artists, works, concepts and theories of the period.
