Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Softcover volume, measuring approximately 5.75" x 8.5", is new, still in shrinkwrap. 256 pages. "Published in 1972, "Learning from Las Vegas" was an almost instant—yet controversial— classic. Born of a design and research studio led by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and graduate student Steven Izenour at the Yale School of Architecture in 1968, its exploration of the signs and urban form of Las Vegas revitalized the architecture discourse of the 1970s and a key reference for postmodernism in architecture, urban design, visual art, and history more broadly. It remains influential for architects, urbanists, and design theorists to the present day. Five decades after the legendary Las Vegas studio, "Eyes That Saw: Architecture after Las Vegas," published in collaboration with Yale School of Architecture, offers a richly illustrated collection of essays investigating the significance of the fieldwork that constituted the basis of "Learning from Las Vegas" from various perspectives. The essays also discuss the great architectural tome's unique position in a network of social, political, and intellectual forces. Published alongside are documents from the Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates archive, as well as an illustrated chronology of international media following the publication of "Learning from Las Vegas." Contributors include architects, artists, and scholars, such as Stan Allen, Eve Blau, Beatriz Colomina, Valéry Didelon, Elizabeth Diller, Peter Fischli, Dan Graham, Neil Levine, Mary McLeod, Rafael Moneo, Stanislaus von Moos, Katherine Smith, Martino Stierli, Karin Theunissen, Robert Venturi, and Denise Scott Brown.".…

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Large-format softcover volume, measuring approximately 9" x 10.75", is new, still in shrinkwrap. 232 pages. "Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is revered worldwide as a revolutionary painter and draftsman and the creator of papiers découpés, the powerful collages that characterized his late work. For a long time, his paintings and drawings overshadowed his achievements as a sculptor. Yet his Back Series of four bas-reliefs depicting a nude woman, created between 1908 and 1930, is recognized as a milestone of modern sculpture. Starting with a seemingly naturalistic approach, his figures progressed through increasing degrees of abstraction that culminated in radical stylization. At the same time, he captured the key "states" as sculptures in their own right, laying bare the workings of his creative process. There are parallels with this process of transformation in his paintings and drawings. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich marking the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth, Matisse—Metamorphosis explores this process and its reciprocal effects and sheds new light on a lesser-known aspect of Matisse's oeuvre. Bringing together documents that reveal Matisse's diverse sources of inspiration for his sculptures, such as nude photographs and works by African and ancient artists, the book also includes many photographs of Matisse at work as sculptor, providing insight into his practice.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Large-format hardcover volume, measuring approximately 11.5" x 13.5", is new, still in shrinkwrap. 160 pages. ""Dreamscapes" is a long-term artistic series by Swiss photographer Dominic Büttner. In it, Büttner records performances at night, both in natural and built environments. Holding a torch, he walks slowly away from a large-format view camera as a time exposure captures the scene, illuminated by moving light from which the artist himself is subsequently erased. By turns strange and yet somehow familiar, the fascinating landscapes show what an eerie place our everyday surroundings can be, depending on the light in which we experience them. "Dominic Büttner—Dreamscapes" is the first book to collect Büttner's art, and it features eighty of his Dreamscapes alongside essays by photography and film expert Elisabeth Bronfen and freelance cultural publicist and editor Nadine Olonetzky.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Large-format hardcover volume, measuring approximately 10" x 12.25", is new. still in shrinkwrap. 224 pages. "One of the world's preeminent Abstract Expressionists, California-born painter Sam Francis (1923-1994) first traveled to Japan in 1957, quickly established studios and residences there, and became active in a circle of avant-garde artists, writers, filmmakers, architects, and composers, including members of the nascent Gutai and Mono-ha movements. This book chronicles those connections, as well as his complex and evolving relationship with East Asian aesthetics from the 1950s through the 1990s. From the very first exhibitions Francis had in Tokyo, critics linked his evocative use of negative space with the Japanese concept of "ma", a symbolically rich interval between objects or ideas. This shared pictorial and philosophical syntax laid the foundation for a feedback loop of mutual influence that spurred frequent collaborations between the artist and his Japanese contemporaries, extending into the realms of printmaking, ceramics, music, poetry, publishing, and performance. Written by art critic and curator Richard Speer, with a foreword by Debra Burchett-Lere, executive director/president of the Sam Francis Foundation, this is the first full-length monograph to explore an important but sometimes overlooked milieu in Post-World War II art—a dialogue between Eastern and Western sensibilities that prefigured our current era of global interconnectedness and cross-cultural exchange. Lavishly illustrated with color plates and archival images, it is an adjunct publication for the related exhibition "Sam Francis and Japan: Emptiness Overflowing" (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2021), co-curated by Speer.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Hardcover volume, measuring approximately 10" x 12.25", is new. 224 pages. "Seoul-based artist Hong Seung-Hye has garnered a unique position in the art scene through her bravado in defying conventional borders, whether it's mixing the abstract and the figurative or the plane and the three-dimensional. Nor does she shy away from employing public spaces just as freely as she experiments inside a white cube. This book, the first in English to focus on Hong's work, traces the trajectory of her prolific career. Featuring more than two hundred color reproductions of Hong's art, it also includes four essays written by distinguished Korean critics, curators, and educators who have closely witnessed and worked alongside Hong throughout the past two decades. Originally written in context with solo exhibitions, each of which marked a milestone in her career, the essays offer individual starting points from which to delve into and read Hong's art. Ranging from her earliest paper collages to her most recent videos, which reinterpret the comic strip character Snoopy, the book presents a comprehensive survey of Hong's versatility.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Large-format volume, measuring approximately 10" x 12.25, is new, still in shrinkwrap. 240 pages. "Born in New York in 1941, Joel Shapiro is one of the most significant artists of his generation. Since the first public showing of his work in 1969 as part of the landmark "Anti-Illusion: Procedures/Materials" exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, he has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. Shapiro is most renowned for developing in the 1980s and '90s a distinctive language of dynamic sculpture that blurs the lines between abstraction and figuration, But he first became known through his earliest shows in New York in the 1970s for introducing common forms in often diminutive size—a chair, a house, a bird or bridge—in large, formerly industrial gallery settings that altered one's sense of scale, challenged the then-dominant severity of minimalism, and attempted to propose a more personal, emotionally laden mode of art that could more directly engage with the human condition. Since then, he has continued to push the material and conceptual boundaries of sculpture —while also remaining active as an innovative draftsman and printmaker—by working in a number of materials and employing various working methods. "Joel Shapiro: Sculpture and Works on Paper, 1969-2019" is the first book in more than twenty years to survey the artist's entire working career. In an extensive essay, art historian Richard Shiff provides a fresh and incisive examination of Shapiro's oeuvre and working process, illuminating the factors and forces that allow his work to remain ever in flux and unpredictable, cohesive and yet multifarious. With more than two hundred striking full-color illustrations, this is a long-anticipated and much-needed survey of this vital and essential American artist.".…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Large-format hardcover volume, measuring approximately 9.25" x 13.5", is new, still in shrinkwrap. 420 pages. "Sigfried Giedion (1888-1968) and Carola Giedion-Welcker (1893-1979) were among the most influential scholars of art and architectural history during the early twentieth century. Of particular impact was their role in connecting leading protagonists of modernism in architecture, art, and literature, such as Alvar Aalto, Hans Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Marcel Breuer, Max Ernst, Walter Gropius, Barbara Hepworth, Le Corbusier, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. The interactions they initiated, for example, on the new vision in photography or the synthesis of arts continue to be highly relevant to the present day. Drawing on a rich trove of documents—16,000 letters and 10,000 photographs and negatives, among other materials—that has only recently become fully accessible for research, The Giedion World offers a long-awaited reevaluation of Sigfried and Carola Giedion-Welcker's work and lasting significance. Featuring a vast number of previously unpublished documents and photographs alongside excerpts from the extensive correspondence between the pair and their artist friends and colleagues in academia, it provides unique and manifold insight into the "Giedion universe."".…
