As World War II approached, the U.S. government foresaw the need for a base of operations in West Africa, and at the end of the war, the U.S. government assumed leadership of the project from the Phelps-Stokes Fund and the churches.

The underground flow of water can create sign…ificant problems for land drainage. Seepage problems concern the percolation of water through dams and into excavations, and the movement of water into and through the soil from bodies of surface water. Dam safety, environmental remedial works and mineral location normally involve comparatively expensive techniques but if the extent and location of groundwater seepage can be accurately predicted then the amount of works and thus costs can be dramatically reduced. The changes in the seepage region could be effectively reflected through the analysis of the groundwater age using parametric simulation analyses. Yet many have been able to overcome their impoverished living conditions and maintain full-time employment. It i…s hypothesized that protective factors promoted resilience within these individuals, which encouraged a successful future. The present study examined both the degree and types of trauma experienced by a sample of Native Americans during childhood, along with their current levels of spiritual functioning and resilience. It was found that, overall they were exposed to significantly more childhood adversities and reported lower levels of education and employment status when compared to the Caucasian counterparts. Despite this, however, the Native American employees, in general, were unusual in the fact that they were not debilitated by their exposure to adverse experiences. While the current study cannot explicitly state what protective factors encouraged resilience, we can confidently conclude many factors existed for these individuals, allowing them to gain the necessary tools that encourage stable employment rather than succumbing to poverty and hardship. 60 pp. Englisch.

In this work were analyzed the possibility to use the mineral content o…f grapes and related wines as tracers of the geographic origin. The experimental design considered eight sites coming from several areas of the Piedmont, Lombardia and Aosta Valley regions, monitoring the mineral content of the vine leaves, the grape and the wine from cv Nebbiolo in order to define which pattern of elements is able to discriminate their origin, following a strictly experimental control. The work was divided into two phases: first development of the method of digestion of leaf, grape and wine samples and second ICP-AES analysis for the collection of relevant data. By means of multivariate statistical analysis, were defined which elements could be used to trace the origin of grapes and wines and if rootstock and variety in the mineral uptake may affect the geographical origin classification, evaluating whether the presence of some elements is more dependent on the cultivation site or on the rootstock/variety combination. 92 pp. Englisch.

In the second part, we give an overview of hash based signature schemes that are a good quantum resistant alternative to the used signature schemes. To address this conflict, the peninsular part of western France, known generally as Britt…any , was chosen as a case study in regional methodology. The conflict between objectivity and subjectivity in regional analysis is considered and rational limits for the application of regionalizing techniques are suggested by factorial distributions. The physical, historical, cultural, and economic regional characteristics of Brittany and the manner in which these characteristics have set this region apart from the remainder of France throughout history are analyzed as well as how the range of the characteristics of Brittany commend themselves for consideration as significant regional determinants. A Breton Index is developed which applies various criteria to every canton in Brittany. The derivation and application of this Breton Index make a compelling case for the utilization of subjective criteria as the primary determinate for regional delimitation. 200 pp. Englisch.

In this study,…we used the ability of a biologically relevant detergent molecule, Lysophosphatidylcholine (Lyso PtdCho), to form mixed micelles with cholesterol or cholesteryl ester (CE) to generate macrophage foam cells. Fluorescent or radiolabelled cholesterol / Lyso PtdCho mixed micelles were prepared and incubated with RAW 264.7 or mouse peritoneal macrophages. Results showed that such micelles were quite stable at 4°C and retained the solubilized cholesterol during one month storage. Macrophages incubated with cholesterol or CE (unlabeled, fluorescently labeled or radiolabeled) / Lyso PtdCho mixed micelles accumulated CE as documented by microscopy, lipid staining, labeled oleate incorporation, and by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Such foam cells unloaded cholesterol when incubated with high density lipoprotein (HDL) and not with oxidized HDL (Ox-HDL). We propose that stable cholesterol or CE / Lyso PtdCho micelles would offer advantages over existing methods. O 96 pp. Englisch.

The predicted RTD is presented in terms of different…volumetric flow rate to illustrate the complicated flow patterns that drive the mixing process in helical static mixers. The computed results are also used to predict the amount of mixing that occurs within a mixing device. Such theoretical estimates need, however, always to be thoroughly checked against observations in Static mixer. The experimental unit is an annulus in which helical elements are brazed on the outer surface of inner tube. The helical elements are arranged alternatively in right and left-handed format. RTD studies were performed by injecting a pulse and the response at the outlet was measured. To check the reliability and the quality of the theoretically estimated RTD from the simulation by the application of the model equation, a comparison of the same with those obtained from observed data using statistical characteristics is done. Comparison between RTD curves shows that motionless mixture can improve the performance of reactor. 128 pp. Englisch.
