Covers are clean and intact overall but have slight darkening, rubbing and small marks, slight wear to extremities, and a slight lean toward fore-edge. A Very Good copy. This book comprises a sweeping study of sexual characteristics, gender roles and norms, and physical and mental capabilities of men and women from different cultures. Authored by Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), an English physician, eugenicist, and intellectual who specialized in the study of human sexuality. A few of his ideas about human sexuality were elaborated upon by Sigmund Freud. While Ellis generally had the aim of discussing academic subjects from a scientific perspective, he believed that non-Western ethnicities were "lower races." In this book, Ellis addresses sexual differences between men and women from a physiological and psychological perspective. There is much discussion about gender and sexual norms among both Western and Eastern cultures. The following is a sampling of the subjects that Ellis addresses in this book: gender norms regarding division of labor (he argues that men tend to take on the energy-expending roles such as hunting while women tend to take the less physically-demanding roles but may be more industrious); "status of women in barbarism"; "medieval attitude towards women"; "the physiological mystery of womanhood" (menstruation); "modern status of women"; "human characteristics of infant apes"; sexual physiological differences in men and women regarding body proportions, pelvis, head, brain, and the senses; the argument that men have greater physical range of motion than women; hand dexterity in men and women; dreams and hallucinations in men and women; effects of anesthesia in men and women; "religious hypnotic phenomena"; "affectability of women"; emotions in men and women; "artistic impulse" in men and women; "why women have failed in music"; "why women have succeeded in Fiction[-writing]"; suicide, insanity, and criminality in men and women; methods of suicide in men and women; "variational tendency of men"; "women more disposed than men to preserve ancient customs and ancient methods of thought"; and natality and mortality. Part of the Contemporary Science Series edited by Ellis.

One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the north-eastern edge of Russia, two sisters are abducted. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. Set on the remote Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth draws us into the world of an astonishing cast of characters, all connected by an unfathomable crime. We are transported to vistas of rugged beauty - densely wooded forests, open expanses of tundra, soaring volcanoes and the glassy seas that border Japan and Alaska - and into a region as complex as it is alluring, where social and ethnic tensions have long simmered, and where outsiders are often the first to be accused. In a story as propulsive as it is emotionally engaging, and through a young writer's virtuosic feat of empathy and imagination, this powerful novel provides a new understanding of the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before.

George Insh was an M.A., D.Litt., R.E.I.S. He was the Author of Scottish Colonial Schemes, 1620-1986, and Editor of Darien Shipping Papers, 1695-1707. This volume records the leading activities of the Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies from the tentative beginnings of 1693 to th formal dissolution of 1707. This is a detailed economic and political account of the leading activities of The Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies, from its tentative beginnings in 1693 to the formal dissolution of 1707. The designation 'Darien Scheme' was often used, instead of the official company name, by later historians whose attention was concentrated almost exclusively on the story of the expeditions to the Isthmus. The Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies, also called the Scottish Darien Company, was an overseas trading company created by an act of the Parliament of Scotland in 1695. The Act granted the Company a monopoly of Scottish trade to India, Africa and the Americas, similar to English charter companies' monopolies, and also extraordinary sovereign rights and temporary exemptions from taxation. Financial and political troubles plagued its early years. The governors were divided between those residing and meeting in Edinburgh and those in London, amongst whom were both Scots and Englishmen. They were also divided by business intentions; some intended to trade in India and on the African coast, as an effective competitor to the English East India Company, while others were drawn to William Paterson's Darien scheme, which ultimately prevailed. In July 1698 the company launched its first expedition, led by Paterson, who hoped to establish a colony in Darien (on the Isthmus of Panama), which could then be used as a trading point between Europe and the Far East. Though five ships and 1,200 Scottish colonists landed successfully in Darien, the settlement was poorly provisioned and eventually abandoned. A second, larger expedition (launched before the fate of the first was known) took up the deserted settlement, but was quickly besieged by the Spanish. More than a thousand succumbed to hunger and disease, and in April 1700, two ships carried the few survivors home. All told, the venture, dubbed the Darien Scheme, drained Scotland of an estimated quarter of its liquid assets and played a key role in encouraging the country to the 1707 Act of Union which united the Kingdoms of Scotland and England. The new joint government, in a political bargain, agreed to cover the costs of winding up the Company of Scotland, in addition to compensate for servicing the English national debt and higher taxes for Scotland.
