Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A gripping, tragic story of negligence, abuse and secrets kept and survived through routines, communion with nature, and fantasy. The weave of details here will keep you reading and call you back to read again. The weight of what is recorded here will bring you back many times more.-Scott Owens, Poet Laureate of Hickory, NC"Mary Ricketson's Tara, The Healing Power of Nature, is quiet, low-key, unsensational-and full of fire. It offers a tender portrait of a girl who moves beyond tropes of helpless victimhood to survive family struggles and incidents of sexual abuse which, with a wrenching accuracy to so many experiences of abuse, not one person ever notices. But Ricketson's Tara finds a path to wholeness through an alchemy of dissociation, imagination, and an ultimate reclamation of herself, grounded in her profound connection to nonhuman nature. This is a book for those who have endured alone, unspeaking and unseen, with neither their wounds nor their strength ever fully recognized, who are making their own way toward healing on their own terms. 'Search within myself guides me again and again, ' says Ricketson, and in her empathic treatment of her character's suffering and renewal, we see one of the ways in which, sometimes, it can."-Catherine Carter, author of By Stone and Needle"Mary Ricketson's compelling story in poems gives us Tara, a child with a rule-laden childhood, Have to do what I'm told. Every time. All the time; and with considerable charm: I might have been born creating sand art in the white grains of this hot southern beach. The poems master subtlety: Mother had trouble on her own; a father's 18-month deployments: Silent fear hides in the shadows. Tara matures, acquiring a useful survival tool: Learn to ignore pain. We listen as her childhood ends: I freeze up inside myself. Powerful storytelling, offset by lyrical work, enables the reader to walk with Tara as she works through survival into a long, fruitful healing: One nightbird in the white oak out back calls to me, only me, sings ease, sings relief. Ricketson gives us insights into how the damaged heal: Make life work in parts I can control myself. This is a wondrous work." -Eugene Stevenson, author of The Heart's Code"Mary's latest book, Tara, The Healing Power of Nature, takes us on an incredible journey with a young girl. Tara suffered more than one trauma, and shared with no one, until her imaginary friend, Cherie appeared. With Cherie and her connection with nature, she survived. For her courage and determination at a young age, Mary's sums it up perfectly in her book with the poem, 'Protected by a Fairy, ' As long as pine roots stretch up to kiss an acorn, and oaks hold sun and shade, I believe in life, and I believe in love."-Glenda Barrett, author of When the Sap RisesAbout the AuthorMary Ricketson, MAEd, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, lives in Murphy NC, and has been a therapist for individuals and families since 1978. In addition to counseling people impacted by trauma, she led a five-year community task force, ultimately founding REACH, professional services for domestic violence and sexual abuse survivors, including a shelter for abused women and their children. In 1987, REACH named her Person of the Decade, honoring her continuing service to battered women and their children. Her nine published poetry collections include Lira, Precious the Mule, STUTTERS: A Book of Hope, and Tall Flowers and Living Long. She won first place in the 2011 Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest 75th anniversary national poetry contest. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Advance praise for Rambling Meditations of Bone-Weary WanderingA long overdue debut. Morgan DePue's poetry has been bookworthy for more than a decade. Still, as fantastic as these are, no printed version will ever convey the power of her voice and delivery style. So when you get the chance to hear her read these live, take it. In the meantime, enjoy the opportunity to ponder these "missives on the mindfulness of meticulous observation" that will help you "see beauty in broken things."-Scott Owens, author of The Song Is Why We SingMorgan A. DePue has the heart of a Beatnik-searching, insistent, rebellious-and the mind of a prophet-troubled by the present but able to see glimmers of a better tomorrow. This book is a journey, on which readers will revel in the beauty of nature and delight in the community that is possible should we choose, as DePue does, to live bravely and love unflinchingly.-Zackary Vernon, author of Our Bodies ElectricMorgan DePue drags you, unyieldingly, through the holy and profane, seeking answers and absolution in the mysterious certitude of the natural world. Woven from shoe-pebbles, stale beer, and star-gazing, these poems are unapologetically raw in their pilgrimage to enlightenment. Paying homage to the Beat generation, DePue compels you to open your eyes to the gorgeous and grotesque, the marvelous and mundane, and insists, only then, that you have a chance at finding yourself.-Jenny Moyer, Poet, halfwayAbout the AuthorMorgan DePue is a neurodivergent poet and folk artist with deep West Virginian roots. She spent her early twenties performing poetry outreach work and readings around North Carolina, developing a reputation in the community for her impassioned readings. She won the NC Poetry Society's 2017 Sherry Pruitt Prize for her pantoum "Continuum: A River Prayer." Morgan's publications appear in FERAL Poetry, Had I A Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood, Salvation South, and Women Speak, among other fine journals and anthologies. She now lives with her partner in Ashe County, NC, and teaches at Appalachian State University. When not writing or teaching, she can be found wading in rivers, wandering hills, and wrangling her small menagerie of cats. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Scott Silsbe's Cosmic American Music is the kind of beautifully wistful, sometimes hilarious, and always gentle company you'd hope to find in a book if you were sleepless at 3am. A distinctively searching voice, riddled with musings on grief, music, poetry, bars, and the bewildering mysteries of being alive, Silsbe honors loved ones who make poignant and often comic appearances in these poems (and who knew the poet Jenny Ashburn was a ventriloquist?). I loved this book. Silsbe is more vulnerable as he hits middle age, and even funnier. And what's not to love in a writer who inspires us to hold our eyes wide open for both the beauty and everyday absurdities of life?-Jane McCafferty, author of The Sea Lion Who Saved the Boy Who Jumped from the Golden GateI've been fortunate enough over the last several years to know Scott Silsbe and his intricate flowing river of words. And while, in the past, I've often found Silsbe's work to be almost as delicate as a tea cup in a steel mill-in the way Jim Daniels can be delicate, or perhaps Edward Field-I think that was just his way of trying to find parts of himself that he hadn't yet explored, it was the search to find his rougher edges. And in this most recent collection, Cosmic American Music, I truly believe Silsbe has come full circle and that he is now completely comfortable in his own skin-it is that ease that shines through like a Rust Belt ballet. So all I can say is, put away your fine china, because that's not the world most of us currently occupy. Least of all Silsbe. Things get messy here and, in my opinion, this book is Scott at his best. It is a fitting tribute to the grittiness of the streets of Pittsburgh that you can feel in your bones. The dirt under Silsbe's fingernails finally feels like his own, so just keep reading-I certainly intend to. And hopefully we can all come out a little cleaner on the other side.-John Dorsey, author of 100 MorningsAbout the AuthorScott Silsbe was born in Detroit. He now lives in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, where he works as a bookseller. His poems and prose have appeared in numerous magazines and have been collected in four previous books-Unattended Fire, The River Underneath the City, Muskrat Friday Dinner, and Meet Me Where We Survive. Silsbe is also the editor of Low Ghost Press. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. …

In her debut chapbook, across the river: pith, pines, and the caverns of a soul, Haven explores early adulthood through the natural world, weaving poems from small moments, allegorical fish, and childhood memories. Heavily inspired by the juxtaposition of the American south's rigid traditions and her own self-discovery, Haven's collection navigates the complexities of home, heritage, and healing. Gossipy deer, political pigeons, and gold medalist arachnids alike rave that these poems are a sanctuary for anyone still fighting against the red clay current. Forever loyal to the Carolinas, Haven's work begs the question: "how does one love a place that was not built to love them back?" Haven is a graduate of both Winthrop University and Clemson University. She lives with her partner in Raleigh, North Carolina, and works as a full-time nanny. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Grief is a Place with a Hole Inside is an unsparing collection about the architecture of loss: the rooms we inherit, the stories we revise, and the absences that become permanent fixtures in our lives. With lyricism, wit, and startling emotional candor, Jay Orlando traces grief across generations-from the death of a mother and the unraveling of a father to the accumulated disasters of addiction, violence, illness, and the ordinary heartbreaks of being human. These poems inhabit the unstable territory between memory and myth, rage and tenderness, faith and doubt, asking what remains when the people who made us are gone. Yet beneath the elegies is an insistence on survival and the stubborn miracle of continuing. Grief is a Place with a Hole Inside is a book about what death takes from us-and about the strange, beautiful things we grow in the space left behind. About the Author Jay Orlando is a trans, queer, folk punk poet hailing from the region of Pennsylvania where the Appalachians kiss the Rust Belt. He lives with his partner and cats in a town that shares a name with a state. When not writing Jay enjoys playing games (video and board), practicing guitar, and singing karaoke. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability. …
