Foreign capital flows I Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). 5. Foreign capital flows II Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI). 6. Foreign exchange management. 7. WTO and India. Bibliography. The importance of external sector in India's economic development has been well recognized and reinforced especially since the initiation of economic reforms in 1991. A study of India's external sector includes a study of a number of aspects such as value composition direction of foreign trade trade policies pursued balance of payments status role of foreign capital WTO related issues (such as textile and patents) etc. A paradigm shift in India's Trade Policy enabled it to not only overcome severe BOP crisis (occurred in 1991) but also provide the much needed resilience to the economy. India has been experiencing surpluses on current account for the past three successive years and has built up foreign exchange reserves to the tune of $128.91 billion as on Feb. 4 2005. Besides there has been a perceptible change in the magnitude composition and direction of foreign trade as well as a structural change in BOP account. Unlike past India's export basket is now more diversified and gaining more strength from the manufactured goods thereby reducing the share of agriculture and allied products. However in terms of the share of total world trade India's performance has not been so good. It caters to only 0.8 per cent of total world trade at present (as against 2 per cent in early 1950s). This book provides a comprehensive coverage and analysis of various aspects of India's external sector. The present volume should be of interest and use to those in research academics business government and to policymakers engaged in the management of economic policy reforms. It also caters to the needs of students of economics and international business. 156 pp.

A case study is a detailed account of an industry company person situation incident or project over a given period of time. In general the content within a case study may include information about company objectives process strategies challenges results recommendations and more. Case study analysis is an important part of most business school curriculum. Case studies are used to teach business school students about business practices. The objective behind incorporation of business and institutional case studies in curriculum is to make students aware of various issues faced by the industry person process or project contemporarily and involve them in getting right solutions through analytical skills and problem solving skills. One of the important factor one has to keep in mind here in this context is the nature of volatile business environment where the managerial process are subjected to change every moment and the individual managers have to take innumerable managerial decisions based on the date available from various sources. Here the managers should be intellectually stimulated emotionally matured analytically well balanced action oriented and bold enough to take appropriate decisions. What the Harvard business school says about case study method is the case study method forces the students to grapple exactly the kinds of decisions and dilemmas managers confront every day. In doing so it redefines the traditional educational dynamics in which the professor dispenses the knowledge and students passively receive it. Case studies are often used to not only illustrate what a student has learned and retained in class but also to provide students with valuable hands on experience. When analyzing a case study the students will put problem solving skills to the test and allow them to engage in exciting discussions with classmates and professors. This particular case study workbook incorporate the case studies from organizational behaviour human resources management and general management. This volume of book consists of 25 case studies and is the maiden effort the author is making for the benefit of students faculty members researchers trainers and management consultants. The updated edition will be published every year with more case studies. 117 pp.

Human rights ensure prosperity in society and social and economic rights take care of the weaker and under privileged sections of the society by providing them equality of opportunity in the matter of education employment and mobility. 142 pp.

The first wave of globalisation was perhaps witnessed in 1870 and it continued up to 1914. The profound influence in driving globalisation came from technological innovation which in fact led to an explosion of productivity and reduction in transportation costs. But the wave came to an end by World War I. The second wave brought about from 1945 to 1980. This continued reducing transportation cost further which effectively fostered increased trade. The latest wave of globalisation began in 1980 is something different. It is distinctive in the sense that a large number of developing nations entered into the world market for selling their manufacturing goods. At the same time some other developing nations became increasingly marginalised in the world economy. 172 pp.

Women in general relative to men face unequal hiring standards unequal opportunities for training unequal pay for equal work unequal access to productive resources segregation and concentration in female sectors and occupations different physical and mental working conditions unequal participation in economic decision making and unequal promotion prospects. These factors negatively affect women's social status and their position in society relative to men and consequently have an impact on gender inequalities in health. Poor people frequently lack access to affordable reliable safe and environmentally benign sources of energy. This hinders their efforts to move out of poverty and seriously constrains their ability to improve their living situations. People without modern energy services must spend more of their time and physical energy on survival and therefore have fewer opportunities to pursue educational and income generating activities. 200 pp.

Participatory development in Kerala an assessment. 5. Participatory development issues and lessons. Bibliography. We define participation in development as a process of equitable and active involvement of all stakeholders in the formulation of development policies and strategies and in the analysis planning implementation monitoring and evaluation of development activities. To allow for a more equitable development process disadvantaged stake holders need to be empowered to increase their level of knowledge influence and control over their own livelihoods including development initiatives affecting them. Participation in development is also seen as an organized effort within institutions and organizations to increase stakeholder access and control over resources and related decision making that contributes to sustainable livelihoods. Participation is furthermore viewed as an iterative process involving the continuous re adjustment of relationships between different stakeholders in a society in order to increase stakeholder control and influence over development initiatives that affect their lives. Participatory approaches methods tools activities and related changes in attitudes can facilitate a more equitable and demand driven participatory development process. In order to institutionalize participation and ensure that collective action does continue after the withdrawal of a programme/project it is essential that the capacities of the stakeholders in particular local institutional arrangements are strengthened. In this respect an appropriate capacity building strategy is required to integrate relevant horizontal and vertical linkages. Participation is the key to sustainable development initiatives since it will lead to building on existing potentials and capacities a greater sense of ownership on the part of the stakeholders increased commitment to the objectives and outcomes longer term social sustainability increased self help capacities stronger and more democratic institutions and partnerships. 195 pp.

Agricultural prices particularly of food grains and oilseeds play an important role in the whole national economy of India. They affect production decisions by the farmers and their incomes. Variations in prices of agricultural commodities is a big problem in Indian agriculture because of the dependence of production on monsoons. Agricultural prices exhibit spatial and temporal price fluctuations. Temporal price variations include seasonal annual and long term fluctuations. The present book analyses the temporal price variation in food grains and oilseeds and makes suggestions to minimize the variation in prices of agricultural commodities in India. 212 pp.

In addition to sex differences in the availability of schooling and in enrolment patterns there are other types of sex inequalities in educational opportunity that have implications for economic rules. Many educational systems are characterized by pervasive sex linked streaming with the result that girls are not offered the same curriculum standards and programme options as boys. The nature of this streaming rarely derives from traditional sex role norms or the traditional division of labour between the sexes but instead reflects trends and practices. Pre vocational and vocational programmes usually tract females into homemaking or domestic science courses while males are taught skills which may lead to remunerative employment. When females are offered career training courses they are usually encouraged to choose terminal vocational programmes that prepare them for a limited range of sex stereotyped jobs. Taking into account the need for study of the problem of women education employment and gender discrimination the present study specifically examined the women education employment and various aspects responsible for gender discrimination in backward region like Hyderabad Karnataka of Karnataka state. 206 pp.

Panchayat is said to be the God that failed but remains the last hope of the poor in the villages. Will Indian democracy take a u turn to reach the poor is a big question mark. The book tries to solve some of the riddles related to Panchayats and throws light on issue which the policy makers have so far by passed or over looked. Panchayats should not be looked at from above on the contrary the top governance should be looked at from the Panchayats levels. This may solve most of the problems facing the top heavy democracy today. The book may open new doors for the success of Panchayats and more realistic approach to village Panchayats as vibrant units of development for the poor. 204 pp.

Due to low incidence of female criminality there is less emphasis on research in this field. However there has been increasing academic interest on female criminality since in the recent past growth of female crimes has shown upward trend. Importantly imprisonment of mother with dependent young child is a problematic issue. The effects of incarceration can be catastrophic on the children and costly to the state in terms of providing for their care. Children should not be allowed to stay in jails because jails are not the place to bring up children. The children of women prisoners living with them in jails are being deprived of their basic rights entitlements and amenities for their development. Against this backdrop present study purports to review the status of women prisoners and their young children living with them and suggesting policy measures for their development. 200 pp.

The book clarifies the concept of sustainable development mentions its underline principles describes the nature of current concern discusses the essential ingredients and outlines the format of an action agenda. It argues a case for value based development which not only retains the positive social values mankind cherishes but also protects and promotes essential unity of mankind despite differences. Sustainable development it avers is a myth if it shuns and shatters social values which are held dear universally. The book also carries forward the sustainability issue to the realm of the development debate on technology in terms of its ecological and environmental implications. It introduces the population dimension as to how rising numbers have to be viewed with extreme anxiety and how inter linkages between environment and development are to be examined. Sustainable development requires a meaningful co ordination between government and NGOs who can work together and not parallel to each other. The book emphasizes that sustainable development is a multidisciplinary field and we must enter into training in economic analyses man management and resource monitoring.
