Ambedkar : A Social Reformer and Architect of the Indian Constitution written by Dr. Sumita Sinha seeks to showcase the meteoric rise of a socially backward and economically disadvantaged mahar boy who attained eminence in life as a social reformer and Constitution maker in the national history of India. The story of his life is a brilliant saga of a multifaceted genius who played a very important role as a jurist, economist, politician, social reformer and a Constitution maker. He dazzled the social and political firmament of India and left behind an indelible stamp in the national life. He was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna , the highest civilian award for his seminal contribution to national life. This book is the record of the relentless struggle that Ambedkar waged for the elimination of manifold social injustices and discriminations to which the depressed or backward classes of our society have been subjected for ages together. He came to realize from his experiences that these social maladies were the inevitable consequences of graded inequality which is an offshoot of caste system prevailing in our society. He felt the need for the transformation of our society without which the upliftment of the untouchables cannot be done. All his social crusades were directed towards the achievements of this goal. When Ambedkar was engaged in framing the Constitution of India, he had at the back of his mind, the welfare and upliftment of the socially downtrodden people. He incorporated many provisions and safeguards in the Constitution to create a just society in which the untouchables will be able to live a life of dignity and respect like the rest of the Indian people. The Constitution of India as drafted under his dynamic and foresighted leadership, remains a unique document for building a Just society .

In the near future, it is expected that there will be a large amount of solid waste produced, including hazardous and plastic waste. It is said that bad land filling in India has a negative effect on the climate. Because of the poor collection, storage, recycling, and processing of solid waste, the quality of solid waste has deteriorated. However, there are many barriers to successful solid waste management, such as weak methods and ineffective Human Resource Management (HRM) practices, which necessitate the creation of a new job role. Complex job design strategies in the field of solid waste practices are not in line with technical development requirements, necessitating the creation of a new job position. Other impediments include a lack of recognising future hires and upgrade loopholes that encourage internal recruiting. There is also no guarantee of a pay rise for a specific job position in response to changing circumstances, and no capacity-building programme for sanitation workers, especially contractual employees. It is also claimed that there is a connection between employee motivation, job satisfaction, and success. Furthermore, due to the organization s status quo strategy, contracting out practices in the field of (Solid Waste Management (SWM) do not achieve their goals. In order to improve efficiency, an effective organisational structure is also essential. Certain factors are to blame for its failure to function effectively: weak planning, inadequate oversight, the establishment of smaller task groups, anxiety and distrust between the deliberative and executive wings, and the lack of timely intervention from external authorities to resolve disputes. On many occasions, the judiciary has actively raised the question of India s SWM activities. Several times, the Supreme Court and the High Court have issued warnings and ordered the state and federal governments to improve solid waste standards in their jurisdictions. However, in the year 2020, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) stated that India s solid waste management practices are ineffective. The performance of the urban local body in solid waste management is mixed best in the area of collection, recycling and process of waste. Commercialization of solid waste practices will enhance solid waste conditions and contribute to the public exchequer, and the presence of private players with a management philosophy would undoubtedly address the poor state of solid waste with appropriate control and oversight in contracting out, and make it profitable. Citizen engagement, along with that of other stakeholders, is also expected to kick successful solid waste management practices to the curb. The aim of this book is to examine the current state of Solid Waste Management (SWM) practices in Chandigarh.

Channelization of savings and investments is inevitable to achieve this. The Government of India, through banks, post offices and other agencies, has introduced several investment avenues, especially meant for middle and lower class people. From the perspective of middle class, there are two options available for investment. They are capital market investments and non-capital market investments. The capital market investment includes shares, debentures, mutual funds, UTI units, Exchange Traded Funds, Derivatives, etc. Bank deposits, Treasury deposit schemes, chit funds of public and private sector institutions, life insurance policies and post office savings schemes are the major investment available for middle class investors. In addition to these, middle class people, predominantly invest money in physical assets gold and real estate. The investors' ultimate aim is maximum return with minimum risk. Though different investment avenues are available, the problem is to take an apt decision on the selection of a most remunerative one. Investors lack adequate knowledge of the features of various avenues. Features of each alternative differ. While some are simple, others are complex. Some guarantee fixed return while others yield varying returns. Some involve high risk while others are safe. Hence, the selection of a particular investment option is conditioned on several aspects. Individual investors, especially the middle class, experience a number of difficulties in investing their hard earned money. The wide-spread geographical distribution, unorganized nature and lack of awareness about different investment alternatives, even among educated class, have led to the widespread exploitation of investing community in both the capital and non-capital market segments. In this complex situation, an investigation on perception and preferences of middle class investors has been attempted by the authors. The book deals with this particular issue. The book comprises seven chapters, including an introduction and summing up. It is hoped that the book will be useful to prospective investors, policy-makers, academicians and researchers in the area of commerce and management studies. (jacket).
