Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Schiwetz, Buck (illustratore). Book Condition: Near fine. Dust jacket condition: Near fine. Illustrations. 1981 reprint of 1972 Doubleday Books edition. The text block is in near fine condition, with no marks, tears, or dog-ears. Tight binding. Not a library book. No bookplate. The brown cover is in near fine condition. The dust jacket is in near fine condition. 8 ¾ x 5 ¾, 262 pages, 17 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] This extraordinary novel is the story of a legacy that disappeared, an in¬herited enigma whose resolution is full of tears, laughter and the diversity of the human condition. In finding the missing $15,000 that his fa¬ther apparently gave to an unknown acquaintance, a son discovers not only the cold-cut truth but the circum¬stances and interrelationships that make wrong seem right and some¬times very, very much vice-versa. The catalyst is the Texas beer joint, Bonney's Place, where a few roads end and many begin. This is a tale of grass-roots wisdom, of bums and not-so-loose women, of free-spenders and free loaders, and, above all, of the many manifestations of love. XX [Biography of Leon Hale from University of Houston, Texas Archival Resources Online, Leon Hale Papers]: Leon Hale is a widely read and longtime columnist for the Houston Chronicle. He makes his home in Houston but spends much time at Winedale (near Round Top, TX) and Santa Fe, NM. Hale is a master at recounting tales of and reflections upon life and times in rural 20th Century Texas. He conveys all his subject's charm in the colloquial language, salty wit, and country humor that he uses so well. Born May 30, 1921, at Stephenville, Texas, Leon Hale was reared in 22 different houses in nine different West Texas towns, from Fort Worth to Lubbock. His father was a store clerk and traveling salesman, but most of his relatives were farmers and his early background is entirely rural. Hale graduated from Eastland, Texas High School in 1939, entered Texas Tech at Lubbock and served 3 years in the U.S Army Air Forces before returning to "Tech" to take a journalism degree in 1946. Hale began his journalism career as assistant editor for the Texas A&M University Extension Service, 1946-47, and progressed as follows: farm and ranch editor for the Houston Post, 1948-52; magazine editor for Humble Oil & Refining Co., 1953-55; "roving Texas columnist" for the Houston Post, 1956-1983; and since 1983, columnist for the Houston Chronicle. In addition, he has served as part-time instructor at Sam Houston State University, contributed to Texas Parade magazine, written free-lance articles, authored ten books and contributed to many others. [Info on the artist Edward Mugge "Buck" Schiwetz (1898-1994)]: He was born in Cuero, Texas to a banker father and artist mother. Buck studied architecture under Joseph Kellogg at Texas A & M University, but never practiced his profession. Instead he went to New York City, where he gained national recognition while working as a self-taught free-lance artist and studied for one year while in New York at the Art Students League. He returned to Texas and founded an advertising firm. In his line of work, he often did illustrations for companies such as Dow Chemical, Humble Oil and many others. The Houston firm was a great success, which he later sold to a national firm and then moved to a ranch outside of Hunt, Texas high on a hilltop overlooking the Guadalupe river. Schiwetz hoped that his legacy would be to leave behind a collection of work that would show Texas as it actually was.
