Named after the novella, The Temperature of Water, th…is collection extends her range and depth into the obsessive worlds of scientific invention, the challenges for those coping with an MS sufferer and a Down syndrome girl, and the brittle worlds of casually formed relationships some want more out of, no matter the cost. From the opening sentences these stories bristle with tensions and often a sense of impending doom lurking beneath the recognisable Kiwi domestic conventions. Signed. 164 pages.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Like new and appears unread but has an ownership sticker to the first page. In 1861, five months after gold was discovered at Gabriel's Gully, Henry Beresford Garrett gained notoriety when his gang robbed 15 gold miners on the trail back to Dunedin. Garrett spent the rest of his lo…ng life in New Zealand jails. He taught himself to read and write and wrote secret accounts of his convict experiences on Norfolk Island and in Australia and portraits of his fellow prisoners and historical figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots, and Judas, whom he defended as the only loyal disciple obeying Christ's command to betray Him. This recreation of Garrett's life from his brutal childhood and graduation to surviving the vicious commandant fictionalised in Marcus Clarke's 'For the Term of His Natural Life', includes Garrett's insights into the punitive Victorian penal system. He rated Dunedin jail as bad as any he had experienced.
