Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Artist-Blacksmith's Craft, published in 1935 and My Life as Artist-blacksmith, published in 1941, are the literary legacy of Julius Schramm and offer a strong encouragement for renewal here in the United States just as they did during their day in Germany. This edition contains the text of both books. Schramm's words in The Artist-blacksmith's Craft speak to blacksmiths today with just as much importance as they did when he wrote them, at the age of seventy: Schramm's My Life as Artist-Blacksmith provides us with the philosophy of his craft, sharing the integrity and enthusiasm that he had for his work at the forge. Francis Whitaker has been responsible for getting the Schramm books published; he suggested the books be translated by Robert Ruhloff and be published by SkipJack Press. Whitaker proudly carries on this tradition of blacksmithing gives us the final word on the contributions Julius Schramm: We all took great pains to satisfy the master and in return had our own satisfaction in doing a fine job. A year with Yellin, two years with Schramm, set the pattern for the rest of my life. The pursuit of perfection. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Samuel Yellin, Metalworker is a photographic essay and documentation about the master artist-blacksmith Samuel Yellin representing the culmination of 19th-century wrought iron design and fabrication. This book is the only attempt to record carefully the evolution of this artistic giant. In Philadelphia, from 1909 to 1940, Yellin created wrought iron work for major clients and architects throughout the US. There are the historic photos of Yellin and those who worked in this famous shop. Better are the many pages of his wrought iron, each piece speaking volumes. There are gates, railings, keys, locks, fireplace sets, lighting devices, and whimsical creatures. The scale of this work is sometimes overwhelming. There is a complete list of Yellin's works recorded on job cards. These cards will help researchers in locating samples of this incredible work. Samuel Yellin's masterpieces remain an important subject to examine, not only for blacksmiths but also for artists, architects, interior designers, historians, and anyone who works with or enjoys metalwork. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The hydraulic forging press is becoming increasingly important to the any blacksmith shop. This relatively small machine, which is often hand made, allows smiths to do many of the same operations as a power hammer while adding more control and expanding what one can do with hot metal. Over forty years ago a spark ignited Randy McDaniel's passion for forging hot metal. This has been a passion that continually grows. Seven years ago his exploration of hot metal evolved and he began specializing in work done with the hydraulic forging press. Randy now creates all of his own tooling and dies which he uses to produce a line of unique items. He loves how the power of his sixty ton press pushes hot metal as if it were clay in his hands. This book covers the history, the how to, and especially the versatility of the hydraulic forging press for the blacksmith and the knife maker. It provides a comparison between the press and other machinery, the different types of presses, which type of press is right for your application, should you build one or buy one, focuses on tooling that you can make to get the most out of your press and much, much more. Large, full-color drawings and photographs of presses, items made on the press, and the tooling used are featured through out the book and in the gallery section. Award-winning author and blacksmith, Randy McDaniel has brought together an international group of collaborators to make Hydraulic Forging Press for the Blacksmith a useful and inspirational resource for anyone forging hot metal. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. E.A. Chase is among the early contemporary American blacksmiths to use mixed metals as well as wood, stone and plastics in his sculptural and architectural commissions. This innovation produced dramatic affects with the contrasting uses of copper, bronze, brass and stainless steel with iron. Complementary to his use of mixed metals, another innovation and the subject of this book, is his use of the handheld pneumatic hammer. Chase began using the pneumatic hammer during the early 1970s for the conventional tasks of riveting and light cutting operations. As he became more familiar with the characteristics of the tool he realized that its unique features could be advantageous in other applications, particularly to reduce the tedium of tasks requiring repetitive blows such as texturing and peening and later to its more ambitious use to construct large scale raised metal work. He noted. New techniques inevitably produce not only different results; their influence will also be apparent in how the work is conceived and rendered. The process in getting your envisioned form can be quite different from the traditional hand process. The pneumatic hammer does not mimic the hand hammer; it has its own "personality" and makes its own accommodations and demands on the smith. So he began a decades long project to document the use of pneumatic hammers and to share this knowledge with the community of smiths. Learn to use the smaller handheld pneumatic hammers on "hot iron" days for cold center punching and line tracing for layout, hot carving and incising, slitting, cutting, peening, and riveting. On "cold working" days these pneumatic hammers are used for forming everything from delicate floral details to large-scale objects in non-ferrous sheet metals. The heavier and more powerful handheld hammers are used almost entirely for hot work such as punching, drifting, cutting and upsetting where the stationary power hammer is inappropriate or where a hand hammer would be a less efficient choice. All of these tools are supported by an array of specialty forged hammer bits that have evolved on an "as needed" basis. Learn from Chase who for over 40 years has devoted all of his creative energy to metalsmithing. This is a must have for all smiths - blacksmiths, metalsmiths, whitesmiths, coppersmiths, tinsmiths - to help create small scale hand projects or large sculptural and architectural commissions. Mike Porter has written a great book for the person who needs to build a gas forge, a melting furnace, a gas burner for an existing forge or needs knowledge about propane and burners in general." - Mark Williams. 'Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, & Kilns' is a do-it-yourselfer's dream book, showing beginners how to make highly efficient gas burners inexpensively. These burners use simple gas accelerators as their central operating principle. All that is needed is a £1 MIG tip and some plumbing parts. This eliminates the need for a blower to supply combustion air, allowing the burners to be built in any size. Burners are featured, which are small enough to be used for a jewelry torch or large enough to heat any ceramic kiln.
