Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche possesses the all~ benefiting nature of a bodhisattva." Born in 1922 in Eastern Tibet, Khenpo Rinpoche entered Thrangu Monastery at the age of twelve, where he underwent many years of training, long retreats, pilgrimages, and philosophical studies. After the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1959, Rinpoche escaped to India, where he taught for some years at Buxa and later at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim. He served as abbot of Tashi Choling Monastery in Bhutan and then at Tilokpur Nunnery in Northern India. In 1978, the 16th Karmapa sent Rinpoche to the United States to teach dharma and to serve as his chief representative in this country. Today Rinpoche is the abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock, New York, and head of affiliate centers throughout the United States. Dharma Paths, the first book of teachings by one of the most highly respected lamas in North America, is a broad and in~depth introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. Geshe Gedün Lodrö, one of the foremost scholars of Tibet, presents the landscape of mental development in a series of lectures revealing a living world of mental therapy replete with resources for describing, facing, and counteracting both superficial and systemic disorders. The title Walking Through Walls comes from his placement of the achievement of meditative calm in the context of an extraordinary feat of non~solidity that can be acquired in various ways. The title also refers metaphorically to the walls of distracting afflictive states, doubts, and distortions that must be melted in order for the mind to become stable, calm, and alertly clear. The false sense of solidity of both inner distortions and the outer material world prevents the unfolding of the mind's potential. In the context of the world~view of Tibetan Buddhism physical feats are consequences of the profound internal transformation accomplished through meditation. ~ Gedün Lodro (1924~1979) entered Drebung Monastic University near Hla~sa at the age of nine as a novice monk. He gained the degree of ge~shay in 1961 in exile in India as the first among three scholars who were awarded the number one ranking in the highest class. A scholar of prodigious learning, he was famed for his wide learning and ability in debate. In 1967 the Dalai Lama sent him to teach at the University of Hamburg, where he learned to speak German fluently and became a tenured member of the faculty. He served as Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia in 1979. when he gave the lectures that comprise this book.
