Advanced technologies require inflexible fixturing. Working by hand means your fingers become those fixtures. Intuition is the adaptable program used to reach the specified goal.Hand grinding and polishing is the most basic process for turning raw glass and crystals into a prototype to be copied for production. When producing one or a handful of parts, it's often less expensive to hand grind and polish than to create the fixtures and tooling for production. That doesn't mean it's always easy, but 10th wave flatness and 10 second parallelism are quite achievable by hand.

The achievement of this goal is strongly dependent on the hybridization technology utilized in bonding the IR focal plane array to the Si ROIC. To this end, this book describes a disruptive architecture in the field of hybridization known as the vertically integrated photodiode. This technology, as applied specifically to HgCdTe, is described in detail by the author. However, it can in principle be applied to any IR semiconducting material system, provided suitable dry etch and passivation technologies exist. The limitations of the many current and varied IR architectures are discussed with regard to diffraction and background-limited performance as a function of operating temperature. Shockley-Read-Hall lifetime is found to be a major factor in these considerations, for which HgCdTe has no IR equal. However, a number of scientific and engineering challenges remain within the HgCdTe materials system before ultimate performance can be achieved. A discussion of those challenges, together with possible outcomes, constitutes the basis of this book.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. This book introduces the reader to many aspects of Fourier optics, using Mathematica as a simulation tool. A brief discussion of Mathematica's symbolic and numerical computation capabilities is introduced. Starting from the wave equation, several simulations of Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction problems are treated symbolically. Diffraction by an arbitrary linear optical system using ABCD matrices includes several symbolic examples. Recognizing that many diffraction problems cannot be solved symbolically, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is introduced and used to calculate many diffraction problems numerically. Three different numerical methods are used: numerical convolution, the Fresnel transform, and the Fresnel transfer function, with examples for each. Simulations of imaging with both coherent and incoherent light are covered both symbolically and numerically. Simulations of Gabor holography, Leith-Upatnieks holography, and phase-stepping holography are treated numerically. Finally, simulations of spatial filtering by manipulating the Fourier spectrum of an object are presented.

This tutorial is written to help engineers tasked with designing illumination optics determine where to start, which methods and approaches to use, and how to gain insight into the nature of the problem at hand. Good illumination design uses patterns from both non-imaging optics (such as compound parabolic concentrators) and imaging optics (such as lenses), often in combination, to produce optimal solutions. These chapters provide readers with a toolbox consisting of a coherent theoretical background, a description of important optical elements and their function, and several design methods. Typical examples are described to illustrate how an experienced optical designer approaches problems, plays with concepts, and arrives at solutions.

Optics Using Python equips readers with the programming skills and experience needed to solve nontrivial optics problems using the completely free Python programming language. The book is divided into two parts: (1) a ""first-order toolbox"" for optical systems and (2) more sophisticated tools "beyond the toolbox." The first part comprises three chapters covering the Python programming language, examples of optics calculations, and data acquisition and processing. The second part consists of two chapters discussing third-party libraries and more-advanced software engineering tools. In contrast to an optics educational text, this book's focus is the synergy of optics with Python. For this reason, the reader is assumed to have some optics knowledge at the level of an undergraduate physics, optics, or electrical engineering department. The book was also written with the practicing engineer in mind, aspiring to provide productivity quickly. To this end, more than 4500 lines of code are available online that accompany the text and provide both instructional examples as well as modeling exercises. Some of these include estimating the resolution of a grating spectrometer, spatial filtering using wave propagation, and the use of Circuit Python to modulate a LED and record data from a lock-in amplifier. Any optics practitioner in search of practical tools for design and lab work will benefit from this book.
