Today, as a result of our in creased knowledge of the pathophysiology, the impro ved imaging procedures, and the standaridized intensive care, the rend is moving toward delayed surgical intervention. The goals in the surgical treatment of necrotizing pancreatitis and diffuse peritonitis are still surgical removal of the focus of infection, elimination of endotoxins by lavage, and optimal drainage of the peritoneal cavity. Depending on the patient's general condition this cannot always be achieved in the first surgi cal intervention. A number of surgical methods have therefore been developed, such as postoperative dorsoventral lavage, step by-step lavage therapy, postoperative closed continuous perito neal lavage, and open treatment (laparostomy). The last-mentioned method ist not new; it was first described by KOR'J;E in 1894 for the treatment of necrotizing pancreatitis. However, due to the progress in intensive care medicine (long term respiratory therapy, hemofiltration, etc.) in the last few years this method of management has become successful and gai ned in recognition.

It appears to have been a game played at least by Ehrenfest and Crommelin -an unmistakable sign of these two physicists's deep culture. This particular quote was for the 'Werkplaats', the Physical Laboratory of the University of Leiden. Our purpose in putting together the Selected Papers of its first Director, Kamerlingh Onnes (1853-1926), is to try and articulate the dominant trends of a different type of culture at Leiden: its physics culture during the years that established low temperature physics as a distinct branch of physics. Our aims in choosing the particular papers are threefold. First, we wish to present the interconnectedness among the different research programs of Kamerlingh Onnes and to bring out the decisive role of the work initiated by van der Waals in determining the direction of nearly all of these research programs.

Mitchell, which was the result of a workshop organized by the Commission of the European Communities and held in Brussels on 25 October 1984. The difference between the content of the first book and that of the present study is that the first is more specifically directed to various kinds and compositions of alloys used in newly developed magnets, while the present book emphasises the improvements obtained when using particular alloys. The study edited by Mitchell deals more specifically with the economic, physical and chemical aspects of rare earth metals based magnet alloys, their properties compared with the more common and classical magnets such as ferro-cobalt alloy magnets, and their applications to various fields of technology. Besides cholesterol in plasma and li poprotein fractions, which is currently used as an indicator of cardiovascular risk, the measurement of the AI and B apolipopro teins can provide additional information about the patients' clinical status. Several studies show that apo B is higher and apo AI is lower in patients with angiographically documented coronary heart dis ease than in symptomatic patients without coronary heart disease. Moreover, discriminant analysis indicated that the concentration of Apo AI and B in plasma are better discriminators than lipo protein cholesterol for identifying patients with coronary heart disease. In some studies the apo Bjapo AI ratio appears to be a more powerful predictor than individual lipoproteins. In a recent study carried out in men, apolipoproteins AI and B were better correlated with the severity of cardiovascular disease than HDL and LDL cholesterol. The predictive power of apolipoproteins could however not be demonstrated in all studies and the value of apolipoprotein measurements in the field of clinical chemistry is still controversial. This is probably due to discrepancies between the results of various studies, arising from differences in the type of immunoassays, the lack of universal reference materials, differ ences between study protocols, variations in the selection of patients and in the grading and interpretation of coronary lesions. 116 pp. Englisch.

It is not only the oldest regular conference in Europe on AI - which spawned the ECAI conferences in 1982 - but it is also the conference that has a tradition for focusing on research as opposed to applications. The 1991 edition of the conference was no different in this respect.
