This volume aims to collect some recent advances in the area in order to allow a quick overview of ongoing research. The contributors are first rate mathematicians. This collection of research papers is centred around parametrix constructions and microlocal analysis; asymptotic constructions of solutions; energy and dispersive estimates; and associated spectral transforms. Applications concerning elasticity and general relativity complement the volume. The book gives an overview of a variety of ongoing current research in the field and, therefore, allows researchers as well as students to grasp new aspects and broaden their understanding of the area. ¿Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 336 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This monograph is a presentation of a unified approach to a certain class of semimartingale inequalities, which can be regarded as probabilistic extensions of classical estimates for conjugate harmonic functions on the unit disc. The approach, which has its roots in the seminal works of Burkholder in the 80s, enables to deduce a given inequality for semimartingales from the existence of a certain special function with some convex-type properties. Remarkably, an appropriate application of the method leads to the sharp version of the estimate under investigation, which is particularly important for applications. These include the theory of quasiregular mappings (with deep implications to the geometric function theory); the boundedness of two-dimensional Hilbert transform and a more general class of Fourier multipliers; the theory of rank-one convex and quasiconvex functions; and more. The book is divided into a few separate parts. In the introductory chapter we present motivation for the results and relate them to some classical problems in harmonic analysis. The next part contains a general description of the method, which is applied in subsequent chapters to the study of sharp estimates for discrete-time martingales; discrete-time sub- and supermartingales; continuous time processes; the square and maximal functions. Each chapter contains additional bibliographical notes included for reference.¿Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 476 pp. Englisch.

In the last 3-5 years they have undergone major development that have made them available and affordable for a broad range of applications in various disciplines of the life and biomedical sciences. These new chemistries and technologies, which are significantly different from the majority of other fluorescence-based probes and detection techniques, have already demonstrated their high utility. This book will provide a systematic overview of the existing and emerging O2 sensing technologies in their different modifications, a practical guide to their rational selection and use, and examples of biological applications/case studies, including details on how to set up and conduct such experiments, troubleshoot and interpret the data.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 112 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Award-winning monograph of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize 2001.Subgroup growth studies the distribution of subgroups of finite index in a group as a function of the index. In the last two decades this topic has developed into one of the most active areas of research in infinite group theory; this book is a systematic and comprehensive account of the substantial theory which has emerged. As well as determining the range of possible 'growth types', for finitely generated groups in general and for groups in particular classes such as linear groups, a main focus of the book is on the tight connection between the subgroup growth of a group and its algebraic structure.A wide range of mathematical disciplines play a significant role in this work: as well as various aspects of infinite group theory, these include finite simple groups and permutation groups, profinite groups, arithmetic groups and Strong Approximation, algebraic and analytic number theory, probability, and p-adic model theory. Relevant aspects of such topics are explained in self-contained 'windows'.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 480 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This book deals with evolutionary systems whose equation of state can be formulated as a linear Volterra equation in a Banach space. The main feature of the kernels involved is that they consist of unbounded linear operators. The aim is a coherentpresentation of the state of art of the theory including detailed proofs and its applications to problems from mathematical physics, such as viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and electrodynamics with memory. The importance of evolutionary integral equations ¿ which form a larger class than do evolution equations¿¿ stems from such applications and therefore special emphasis is placed on these. A number of models are derived and, by means of the developed theory, discussed thoroughly. An annotated bibliography containing 450 entries increases the book¿s value as an incisive reference text. This excellent book presents a general approach to linear evolutionary systems, with an emphasis on infinite-dimensional systems with time delays, such as those occurring in linear viscoelasticity with or without thermal effects. It gives a very natural and mature extension of the usual semigroup approach to a more general class of infinite-dimensional evolutionary systems. This is the first appearance in the form of a monograph of this recently developed theory. A substantial part of the results are due to the author, or are even new. (¿) It is not a book that one reads in a few days. Rather, it should be considered as an investment with lasting value.(Zentralblatt MATH)In this book, the author, who has been at the forefront of research on these problems for the last decade, has collected, and in many places extended, the known theory for these equations. In addition, he has provided a framework that allows one to relate and evaluate diverse results in the literature.(Mathematical Reviews)This book constitutes a highly valuable addition to the existing literature on the theory of Volterra (evolutionary) integralequations and their applications in physics and engineering. (¿) and for the first time the stress is on the infinite-dimensional case.(SIAM Reviews)Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 392 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The focus of this book and its geometric notions is on real vector spaces X that are finite or infinite inner product spaces of arbitrary dimension greater than or equal to 2. It characterizes both euclidean and hyperbolic geometry with respect to natural properties of (general) translations and general distances of X. Also for these spaces X, it studies the sphere geometries of Möbius and Lie as well as geometries where Lorentz transformations play the key role.Proofs of newer theorems characterizing isometries and Lorentz transformations under mild hypotheses are included, such as for instance infinite dimensional versions of famous theorems of A.D. Alexandrov on Lorentz transformations. A real benefit is the dimension-free approach to important geometrical theories.New to this third edition is a chapter dealing with a simple and great idea of Leibniz that allows us to characterize, for these same spaces X, hyperplanes of euclidean, hyperbolic geometry, or spherical geometry, the geometries of Lorentz-Minkowski and de Sitter, and this through finite or infinite dimensions greater than 1.Another new and fundamental result in this edition concerns the representation of hyperbolic motions, their form and their transformations. Further we show that the geometry (P,G) of segments based on X is isomorphic to the hyperbolic geometry over X. Here P collects all x in X of norm less than one, G is defined to be the group of bijections of P transforming segments of P onto segments. The only prerequisites for reading this book are basic linear algebra and basic 2- and 3-dimensional real geometry. This implies that mathematicians who have not so far been especially interested in geometry could study and understand some of the great ideas of classical geometries in modern and general contexts.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 328 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -In a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the theory of plane algebraic curves, the authors examine this classical area of mathematics that both figured prominently in ancient Greek studies and remains a source of inspiration and atopic of research to this day. Arising from notes for a course given at the University of Bonn in Germany, ¿Plane Algebraic Curves¿ reflects the authors¿ concern for the student audience through its emphasis on motivation, development of imagination, and understanding of basic ideas. As classical objects, curves may be viewed from many angles. This text also provides a foundation for the comprehension and exploration of modern work on singularities. In the first chapter one finds many special curves with very attractive geometric presentations ¿ the wealth of illustrations is a distinctive characteristic of this book ¿ and an introduction to projective geometry (over the complex numbers). In the second chapter one finds a very simple proof of Bezout¿s theorem and a detailed discussion of cubics. The heart of this book ¿ and how else could it be with the first author ¿ is the chapter on the resolution of singularities (always over the complex numbers). (¿) Especially remarkable is the outlook to further work on the topics discussed, with numerous references to the literature. Many examples round off this successful representation of a classical and yet still very much alive subject.(Mathematical Reviews)Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 732 pp. Englisch.

A variety of pathogenetic mechanisms are involved in these infections and an understanding of the pathogenesis is essential in understanding the diagnostic and clinical management aspects of the disease. Specialized investigations are often necessary for definitive diagnosis, although a presumptive diagnosis should often be suspected on the basis of the clinical features. Many of the chapters in this book are written by neurologists who are experts in basic science research of their topic in addition to active clinical practice in their specialty.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 428 pp. Englisch.
