Prominent examples include various classes of o- dimensional singular integral equations or equations related to single and double layer potentials. Usually, a mathematically rigorous foundation and error analysis for the approximate solution of such equations is by no means an easy task. One reason is the fact that boundary integral operators generally are neither integral operatorsof the formidentity plus compact operatornor identity plus an operator with a small norm. Consequently, existing standard theories for the numerical analysis of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind are not applicable. In the last 15 years it became clear that the Banach algebra technique is a powerful tool to analyze the stability problem for relevant approximation methods [102, 103, 183, 189]. The starting point for this approach is the observation that the stability problem is an invertibility problem in a certain BanachorC -algebra. As a rule, this algebra is very complicated - and one has to nd relevant subalgebras to use such tools as local principles and representation theory. However, invariousapplicationsthereoftenarisecontinuousoperatorsacting on complex Banach spaces that are not linear but only additive - i. e. , A(x+y)= Ax+Ay for all x,y from a given Banach space. It is easily seen that additive operators 1 are R-linear provided they are continuous. 306 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A model theory that is independent of any concrete logical system allows a general handling of a large variety of logics. This generality can be achieved by applying the theory of institutions that provides a precise mathematical formulation for the intuitive concept of a logical system. Especially in computer science, where the development of a huge number of specification logics is observable, institution-independent model theory simplifies and sometimes even enables a concise model-theoretic analysis of the system. Besides incorporating important methods and concepts from conventional model theory, the proposed top-down methodology allows for a structurally clean understanding of model-theoretic phenomena. As a consequence, results from conventional concrete model theory can be understood more easily, and sometimes even new results are obtained. 376 pp. Englisch.

It explores an interplay between, on the one side, linear operators, transferring real (complex) functions onto elements of locally convex Hausdorff spaces, and vector-valued measures, on the other. The book contains not only a large amount of new material but also corrects various errors in well-known results available in the literature. 304 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Operator theory and functional analysis have a long tradition, initially being guided by problems from mathematical physics and applied mathematics. Much of the work in Banach spaces from the 1930s onwards resulted from investigating how much real (and complex) variable function theory might be extended to fu- tions taking values in (function) spaces or operators acting in them. Many of the rst ideas in geometry, basis theory and the isomorphic theory of Banach spaces have vector measure-theoretic origins and can be credited (amongst others) to N. Dunford, I.M. Gelfand, B.J. Pettis and R.S. Phillips. Somewhat later came the penetratingcontributionsofA.Grothendieck, whichhavepervadedandin uenced theshapeoffunctionalanalysisandthetheoryofvectormeasures/integration ever since. Today, each of the areas of functional analysis/operator theory, Banach spaces, and vector measures/integration is a strong discipline in its own right. However, it is not always made clear that these areas grew up together as cousins and that they had, and still have, enormous in uences on one another. One of the aims of this monograph is to reinforce and make transparent precisely this important point. 400 pp. Englisch.

At rst sight, this pursuit of maximum possible generality harbors the danger of completely forgetting the classical beginnings, so that not only the answers but also the questions would defy stating in traditional terms. Noncommutative geometry itself would become not only a method but also the main subject of investigation according to the capacious but not too practical formula: 'Know thyself. ' Fortunately, this is not completely true (or even is completely untrue) in reality: there are numerous problems that are quite classical in their statement (or at least admit an equivalent classical statement) but can be solved only in the framework of noncommutative geometry. One of such problems is the subject of the present book. The classical elliptic theory developed in the well-known work of Atiyah and Singer on the index problem relates an analytic invariant of an elliptic pseud- i erential operator on a smooth compact manifold, namely, its index, to topol- ical invariants of the manifold itself. The index problem for nonlocal (and hence nonpseudodi erential) elliptic operators is much more complicated and requires the use of substantially more powerful methods than those used in the classical case. 224 pp. Englisch.

These articles reflect Professor Wisbauer's wide interests and give an overview of different fields related to module theory, some of which have a long tradition whereas others have emerged in recent years. They include topics in the formal theory of modules bordering on category theory, in ring theory, in Hopf algebras and quantum groups, and in corings and comodules. 355 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Tissue engineering is gaining interest as it is applied for regeneration of organs to attain their lost function. Although resorbable scaffolds and progenitor cell types are required principles to engineer a functional tissue locally, the inductive signal is a prerequisite to trigger the growth and differentiation of responding cells in space and time. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), also called growth and differentiation factors (GDFs), originally identified from bone have been successfully used to regenerate the bone in humans. Most recent preclinical data suggests that BMPs have a potential to provide protection against inflammation and fibrosis in acute and chronic injury of parenchymal tissues when applied systemically to sustain the function of kidney and liver. The application of BMPs from a local to systemic utility is a rapidly growing field, gaining interest among researchers and biotech entrepreneurs. In this volume, we summarize the advances made on the local and systemic use of BMPs including chapters covering the regulation of BMP-signalling pathways, biological actions of BMPs in bone, cartilage and teeth, as well as clinical applications and potential systemic use of BMPs for tissues beyond bone. This volume is of interest to researchers from immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, and clinicians from orthopedics and dentistry, as well as to research managers from biotech and pharmaceutical companies. 343 pp. Englisch.
