This volume provides a combination of reviews, methodological studies, and applications, which point to promising efforts in this field. The volume will be useful to students and professional researchers alike, who are interested in using stochastic modeling for probing the nature of earthquake phenomena, as well as an essential ingredient for earthquake forecasting.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 384 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This book is the third in a series of lectures of the S¿ eminaire Poincar¿ e,whichis directed towards a large audience of physicists and of mathematicians. The goal of this seminar is to provide up to date information about general topics of great interest in physics. Both the theoretical and experimental aspects are covered, with some historical background. Inspired by the Bourbaki seminar in mathematics in its organization, hence nicknamed ¿Bourbaphi¿, this Poincar¿ e Seminar is held twice a year at the Institut Henri Poincar¿ ein Paris, with contri- tions prepared in advance. A particular care is devoted to the pedagogical nature of the presentation so as to ful ll the goal of being readable by a large audience of scientists. ThisvolumecontainsthesixthsuchSeminar,heldin2004.Itisdevotedtothe Quantum Hall E ect. After a historical and general presentation by Nobel prize Klaus von Klitzing, discoverer of this e ect, the volume proceeds with reviews on the mathematics and physics of both the integer and fractional case, and includes up to date presentations of the tunneling and metrology experiments related to the Quantum Hall E ect. We hopethat the publicationof this serieswill servethe community of phy- cists and mathematicians at professional or graduate student level. ¿ We thank the Commissariat `al¿Energie Atomique (Division des Sciences de laMati` ere),theCentreNationaldelaRechercheScienti que(SciencesPhysiqueet Math¿ ematiques), and the Daniel Iagolnitzer Foundation for sponsoring the Se- nar. This volume provides recent insights into the control of expression, functioning and membrane trafficking of nervous system sodium channels and reviews why sodium channel sub-types are potentially important drug targets in the treatment of pain. The roles of sodium channels in dental and visceral pain are also addressed. The emerging role of sodium channel Nav1.3 in neuropathic states is another important theme.Authors from the pharmaceutical industry discuss pharmacological approaches to the drug targeting of sodium channels, and in particular Nav1.8, exclusively expressed in nociceptive neurons. The final chapter highlights the functional diversity of sodium channels in part provided by post-transcriptional processing and the insights into sodium channel function that are being provided by tissue specific and inducible gene knock-out technology.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 212 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Hyperbolic partial di erential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in the applied sciences. Despite of considerable progress in the past decades, the mathematical theory still faces fundamental questions concerningthe in uenceofnonlinearitiesormultiple characteristicsofthe hyperbolicoperatorsor geometric properties of the domain in which the evolution process is considered. The current volume is dedicated to modern topics of the theory of hyperbolic equations such as evolution equations multiple characteristics propagation phenomena global existence in uence of nonlinearities. It is addressed both to specialists and to beginners in these elds. The c- tributions are to a large extent self-contained. The rst contribution is written by Piero D Ancona and Vladimir Georgiev. Piero D Ancona graduated in 1982 from Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. Since 1997he isfull professorat the Universityof Rome1. Vladimir Georgievgraduated in1981fromtheUniversityofSo a.Since2000heisfullprofessorattheUniversity of Pisa. The rst part of the paper treats the existence of low regularity solutions to the local Cauchy problem associated with wave maps. This introductory part f- lows the classical approach developed by Bourgain, Klainerman, Machedon which yields local well-posedness results for supercritical regularity of the initial data. The nonuniqueness results are establishedbytheauthors under the assumption that the regularity of the initial data is subcritical. The approach is based on the use of self-similar solutions. The third part treats the ill-posedness results of the Cauchy problem for the critical Sobolev regularity. The approach is based on the e ective application of the properties of a special family of solutions associated with geodesics on the target manifold. 511 pp. Englisch.
