At first, it was considered a revolutionary biomedical procedure, which could potentially cure any disease for which the molecular bases were understood.… Since then, gene therapy has gone through many stages and has evolved from a nearly unrealistic perspective to a real life application. Clinical efficacy in humans was demonstrated at the beginning of this century after its successful application in small-scale clinical trials to cure severe immunodeficiency in children. However, their successes were overshadowed some time later by the occurrence of vector-related leukaemia in a number of treated children. It is in this context that lentiviral vectors have appeared, with improved efficiency and, possibly, increased biosafety. Very recently, the first clinical trials with lentivectors have been carried out with some success. This Brief firstly defines gene therapy, and places lentivectors within this fascinating therapeutic strategy. Then follows a comprehensive description of the development of retroviral and lentiviral vectors and how to specifically target distinct cell types and tissues. The authors also discuss the application of lentivector gene therapy for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, ending with the application of lentivectors in human gene therapy clinical trials. 116 pp. Englisch.

They then computed the Fourier coefficients of these forms in terms of period integrals and L-functions. In… this book the authors take an alternate approach to these theorems and generalize them to the setting of Hilbert modular varieties of arbitrary dimension. The approach is conceptual and uses tools that were not available to Hirzebruch and Zagier, including intersection homology theory, properties of modular cycles, and base change. Automorphic vector bundles, Hecke operators and Fourier coefficients of modular forms are presented both in the classical and adèlic settings. Much of this growth in the traditionally separate sciences of chemistry and molecular gerontology occurred independently, with little interaction or communi cation between the scientists working in these two fields. In view of the growing maturity of the two fields and the potential importance of advancing our knowledge in the area of oxidative stress and aging, we perceived a critical need to organize an international conference the 'First Inter national Conference on Oxidative Stress and Aging' in Hawaii in 1994 to bring together the world's leading scientists in the fields of reactive oxygen species and molecular gerontology. The objective of this conference was to provide a unique opportunity for scholars working in these two related and rapidly growing fields to participate in the exchange, integration, and synthesis of new concepts and ideas, to engage in constructive criticism and to initiate new collaborative research projects. The conference focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of aging as related to oxidative stress. It was one of the largest and most comprehensive international conferences held in molecular gerontology. Dieses wurde im An schluss von der Schulleitung u…nd der Forschungskommission im Prinzip gutgeheissen. Der vor liegende Antrag konkretisiert dieses Vorgesuch und stiitzt sich dabei auf umfangreiche Abklarun gen und Diskussionen mit Kollegen innerhalb der Hochschule und Fachleuten aussenstehender In stitutionen. Ein Bericht iiber die in dieser Phase erfolgten Kontakte fmdet sich im Anhang A. 1m Anhang B sind die Protokolle der wichtigsten Besprechungen zusammengestellt. 1.2 Thematik und zentrale Begriffe Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, vor dem 65. Lebensjahr zu sterben, ist!p den letzten hundert Jahren von etwa 70% auf etwa 20% gesunken. Geophysikalische Risiken (Uberflutung, Diirre, Erdbeben . ) haben wir in unserem Lebensbereich zu beherrschen gelemt. Hungerkatastrophen sind ffir den 'westlichen' Menschen keine Gefahr mehr. Infektionskrankheiten sind praktisch beseitigt. Selbst der Anteil der Toten durch UnfaIle ging im Laufe der Jahre zuriick. Wir leben Hinger und weniger gefahrlich als unsere Vorfahren. Das ist weitgehend auf den Einsatz der Technik zuriickzufiihren. Die Technik erhOht eindeutig die Lebenserwartung des Menschen. Freilich beeintrachtigt die durch erhOhte Anforderungen an die Lebenaqualitiit hervorgerufene Technik gleichzeitig die Sicherheit: Die Vergiftung von Luft, Wasser und Boden nimmt zu. Tech nologische Risiken und in ihrem Gefolge Krebs und Krankheiten der Atmungsorgane treten als Todesursachen an die Stelle traditioneller Risiken. Transport und Verkehr, aber auch Stichworte wie Bhopal, Tschemobyl und Schweizerhalle stehen fUr die negativen Konsequenzen der Technik. 289 pp. Deutsch.

Den drei Arbeiten zur Astronomie (Cross, Yolk, Nevskaja) schliessen sich sechs Uber Eulers Beziehungen zu Akademien und markanten Einzelpersan lichkeiten an (Kopelevic bis Jaquel), gefolgt von drei Beitragen zur Philoso phie, Theologie und Biographie Eulers (Breidert, Raith, Bernoulli). Den Abschluss bilden drei Darstellungen zur Editionsgeschichte der Opera omnia und zur Bibliographie (Biermann, Burckhardt). Jeder Beitrag kann unabhan gig von der getroffenen Reihenfolge gelesen werden. Einheitlich im ganzen Band werden die BezUge auf die Werke Eulers abgekUrzt zitiert, und zwar in der Reihenfolge: Nummer des Enestram Verzeichnisses, Serie der Opera omnia, Band, evtl. Seitenangabe. Nach der Formulie rung der sog. 'speziellen Relativitatstheorie' (SRT) im Jahr 1905 nah men zunachst nur ein…ige Spezialisten von ihr Kenntnis, bis mit ungefiihr fiinf Jahren Verspatung dann auch zunehmend Nicht-Physiker sich mit ihr zu beschaftigen begannen, angeregt durch populiirwissenschaftliche, all gemeinverstiindliche 'Einfiihrungen' von Kollegen Einsteins wie z. B. Paul Langevin in Frankreich oder Max von Laue in Deutschland. Diese Pha senverschiebung zwischen fachwissenschaftlichem Ausbau der Theorie und offentlicher Notiznahme wiederholte sich bei Einsteins 'allgemeiner Theorie der Relativitat und Gravitation' (ART). Zwischen 1913 und 1915 in ihren wesentlichen Ziigen ausformuliert, wurde sie erst nach einer spektakuliiren experimentellen Bestatigung im Jahr 1919 einem breiterem Publikum be kannt. In meiner Arbeit werde ich den Facettenreichtum der Ausdeutungen, die beide RT erfuhren, zunachst zu referieren und durch repriisentative Zi tate aus der Literatur der Zeit zu belegen haben. Der Umfang dieser Arbeit geht wesentlich auf das Konto dieser ausgewahlten Belege - davon verspre che ich mir, dafi nicht nur bislang unveroffentlichte Dokumente, sondern auch entlegene Texte hier in ihren zentralen Passagen leicht zuganglich ge macht werden. Fernerhin werde ich aber auch zu analysieren haben, warum derartig vielfaltige, einander mitunter diametral entgegengesetzte Interpre tationen einer wissenschaftlichen Theorie vorgelegt wurden. 574 pp. Deutsch.
