At first, it was considered a revolutionary biomedical procedure, which could potentially cure any disease for which the molecular bases were understood. Since then, gene therapy has gone through many stages and has evolved from a nearly unrealistic perspective to a real life application. Clinical efficacy in humans was demonstrated at the beginning of this century after its successful application in small-scale clinical trials to cure severe immunodeficiency in children. However, their successes were overshadowed some time later by the occurrence of vector-related leukaemia in a number of treated children. It is in this context that lentiviral vectors have appeared, with improved efficiency and, possibly, increased biosafety. Very recently, the first clinical trials with lentivectors have been carried out with some success. The organizing committee consisted of W.N. Everitt (Birmingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec served efficiently an'd enthusiastically as secretary to the con ference. The meeting was attended by 50 participants from 16 countries. In his opening address, W. Walter had to report on the death of five colleagues who had been active in the area of inequali ties and who had served the mathematical community: P.R. Beesack, G. Polya, D.K. Ross, R. Bellman, G. Szegö. He made special mention of G. Polya, who had been the last surviving author of the book InequaZities (Cambridge University Press, 1934), who died at the age of 97 years and whose many and manifold contributions to mathematics will be recorded elsewhere, in due course. Inequalities continue to play an important and significant role in nearly all areas of mathematics. The interests of the participants to this conference reflected the many different fields in which both classical and modern inequalities continue to influence developments in mathematics. An alternative approach is to incorporate the numerical aspects of linear algebra and cal culus as these subjects are being developed. The approach we prefer is to treat the numerical aspects separately, but after some theoretical background. Nach der Formulie rung der sog. 'speziellen Relativitatstheorie' (SRT) im Jahr 1905 nah men zunachst nur einige Spezialisten von ihr Kenntnis, bis mit ungefiihr fiinf Jahren Verspatung dann auch zunehmend Nicht-Physiker sich mit ihr zu beschaftigen begannen, angeregt durch populiirwissenschaftliche, all gemeinverstiindliche 'Einfiihrungen' von Kollegen Einsteins wie z. B. Paul Langevin in Frankreich oder Max von Laue in Deutschland. Diese Pha senverschiebung zwischen fachwissenschaftlichem Ausbau der Theorie und offentlicher Notiznahme wiederholte sich bei Einsteins 'allgemeiner Theorie der Relativitat und Gravitation' (ART). Zwischen 1913 und 1915 in ihren wesentlichen Ziigen ausformuliert, wurde sie erst nach einer spektakuliiren experimentellen Bestatigung im Jahr 1919 einem breiterem Publikum be kannt. In meiner Arbeit werde ich den Facettenreichtum der Ausdeutungen, die beide RT erfuhren, zunachst zu referieren und durch repriisentative Zi tate aus der Literatur der Zeit zu belegen haben. Der Umfang dieser Arbeit geht wesentlich auf das Konto dieser ausgewahlten Belege - davon verspre che ich mir, dafi nicht nur bislang unveroffentlichte Dokumente, sondern auch entlegene Texte hier in ihren zentralen Passagen leicht zuganglich ge macht werden. Fernerhin werde ich aber auch zu analysieren haben, warum derartig vielfaltige, einander mitunter diametral entgegengesetzte Interpre tationen einer wissenschaftlichen Theorie vorgelegt wurden. 574 pp. Deutsch.
