It is essentually a graduate textbook. Singular integral equations have attracted more and more attention, because, on one hand, this… class of equations appears in many applications and, on the other, it is one of a few classes of equations which can be solved in explicit form. In this book material of the monograph [2] of the authors on one-dimensional singular integral operators is widely used. This monograph appeared in 1973 in Russian and later in German translation [3]. In the final text version the authors included many addenda and changes which have in essence changed character, structure and contents of the book and have, in our opinion, made it more suitable for a wider range of readers. Only the case of singular integral operators with continuous coefficients on a closed contour is considered herein. The case of discontinuous coefficients and more general contours will be considered in the second volume. We are grateful to the editor Professor G. Heinig of the volume and to the translators Dr. B. Luderer and Dr. S. Roch, and to G. Lillack, who did the typing of the manuscript, for the work they have done on this volume. 269 pp. Englisch.

CAPTOPRIL, the prototype of the 'PRIL' family, which now comprises more than 40 molecule-species, was quite hazardous and the clinical develop ment almost failed when serious side-effects were reported in an alarmist fash ion in reputable scientific journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet. Squibb & Sons came very close to withdrawing CAPTOPRIL from clinical investigation [2]. However, after re-examination of the data obtained from different categories of patients and appropriate dose-adjustments, the clinical use of CAPTOPRIL turned out to be revolutionary. The prototype, as well as other members of the 'PRIL' family became the starting point for numerous basic and clinical research programs, focusing on the interactions of ACEI with the kinin, endothelin, and nitric oxide systems, and the contribution of the receptors for AT I, AT 2, bradykinin Bland B , ETA and ET B to the pharmacological actions 2 of the respective peptides. This research activity led to the development of new pharmacological agents, such as the angiotensin receptor antagonists and, more recently, the neutral endopeptidase inhibitors. This volume is a memorial to Paul by operator theorists he inspired. Paul'sinit…ial research,beginning with his 1938Ph.D. thesis at the University of Illinois under Joseph Doob, was in probability, ergodic theory, and measure theory. A shift occurred in the 1950s when Paul's interest in foundations led him to invent a subject he termed algebraic logic, resulting in a succession of papers on that subject appearing between 1954 and 1961, and the book Algebraic Logic, published in 1962. Paul's rst two papers in pure operator theory appeared in 1950. After 1960 Paul's research focused on Hilbert space operators, a subject he viewed as enc- passing nite-dimensional linear algebra. Beyond his research, Paul contributed to mathematics and to its community in manifold ways: as a renowned expositor, as an innovative teacher, as a tireless editor, and through unstinting service to the American Mathematical Society and to the Mathematical Association of America. Much of Paul's in uence owed at a personal level. Paul had a genuine, uncalculating interest in people; he developed an enormous number of friendships over the years, both with mathematicians and with nonmathematicians. He is known for his work in the philosophy of mathematics, for his critical and editorial work on Leibniz, for his a…ttempt to popularise modern logic in France, for his commitment to an international auxiliary language, as well as for his extended correspondence with scholars and mathematicians from Great Britain, the United States, Italy, and Germany. From his correspondence we know of four unpublished manuscripts on logic and its history, which were largely complete and some of which must have been of considerable size. We publish here for the rst time in a critical edition the only one of these manuscripts that has been rediscovered: the Traité de Logique algorithmique, presumably written in the years 1899-1901. It is a highly interesting document of the academic reception and popularisation of symbolic logic in France. It provides evidence of the discussions and controversies which accompanied the creation of logic as a new branch of science. At the same time it completes the picture of Couturat's work, which has been opened up to systematic study by the publication of important parts of his correspondence during the last decade. We append the article on Symbolic Logic of 1902 which Couturat wrote in collaboration with Christine Ladd- Franklin for Baldwin's Dictionary of Philosophy and Psychology. 328 pp. Englisch, Französisch.

Leider konnten auch nicht alle aktuellen Entwicklungen berücksichtigt werden, über die im Seminar berichtet wurde. Die Ziele der hier vorliegenden Beiträge, auf deren Inhalt wir in der Einführung ausführlicher eingehen werden, sind entsprechend unterschiedlicher Natur. Einige liefern Darstellungen bereits publizierter Theorien, wobei sie allerdings ein größeres Gewicht auf Motivation und die Ausführung von Beispie len legen, als dies in den Originalarbeiten möglich war.
