It was there that Zionts met another of us (Telgen) who was then in the process of completing a dissertation on redundancy in linear programming. At that time, Telgen proposed an extended visit to Buffalo, during which time he and Zionts would do an extensive study on redundancy. Redundancy, hardly an exciting or new topic, does have numerous applications. Telgen and Zionts planned the project for the Summer of 1980, and enlisted the support of all the contributors as well as the other two members of our team (Karwan and Lotfi). Lotfi was then a Ph. D. student in Industrial Engineering searching for a thesis topic. Redundancy became his topic. Karwan and Zionts served as his thesis co-chairmen, with Telgen serving as an outside reader of the thesis. We initially had hoped to complete the study during Telgen's stay in Buffalo, but that was far too optimistic. Lotfi completed his dissertation during the late Spring-early Summer of 1981. As the project took shape, we decided that we had more than enough for an article, or even several articles. It also gave us the chance to celebrate the founding of a new Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research, whose two depart ments are headed by Dr. K. -A. So wurden unter anderen ausgeklammert die Ohrfehlbildungen, die Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumen spalten, die Fehlbildungen und angeborenen Verbildungen der Gliedmaßen, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen. Trotz dieser Be schränkung war die Thematik ausgewogen und es sind alle in der Gesellschaft vereinigten Fachgebiete zu Wort gekommen. Die inter disziplinäre Diskussion hat sich wieder als äußerst fruchtbar erwie sen. Auch im Kindesalter ist es Aufgabe der regionalen plastischen und wiederherstellenden Chirurgie, nicht nur das Erscheinungsbild, also die Ästhetik zu erhalten oder wiederherzustellen, sondern auch die Funktion zu berücksichtigen, sie zu erhalten, und wenn sie ge stört ist, sie zu verbessern. Das zunehmende Interesse an Parallelrechnern hat die Entwick lung von parallelen Algorithmen zur Lösung vielfältiger Problemstellungen beschleunigt. Eine Darstellung von Grundprinzipien, Entwurfsmöglichkeiten und Realisierungen paralleler Algorith men, die das Leistungspotential innovativer Rechnerarchitekturen erschließen, erscheint für die integrale Betrachtung der Thematik des 'Parallel Computing' nicht nur notwendig, sondern auch - vor allem auf die deutschsprachige Fachliteratur bezogen - überfällig. Dem vorliegenden Band liegt das Skriptum -einer Spezial vorlesung gleichen Titels zugrunde, die ich im Sommersemester 1980 an der Universität Dortmund auf Einladung der Abteilung Informatik gehalten habe. Es ist nicht das Ziel, eine möglichst vollständige Sammlung der in den Zweigen dieses expansiven Forschungsgebietes bisher entwickelten parallelen Algorithmen zu liefern; vielmehr sollen mit dieser Annäherung an eine erste Gesamtdarstellung der Themati- insbesondere auch durch die Gegenüberstellung von repräsentativen sequentiellen Algorithmen - Charakteristika originärer paralleler Algorithmen aufgezeigt und ihr Bezug zu den Architektur elementen von Parallelprozessoren verdeutlicht werden. In den letzten 10 Jah ren hat daher die Bedeutung der Bildkommunikation erheblich zugenommen. Dies wurde aber auch begtinstigt durch die eindrucksvolle Weiterentwick lung der Breitband-Ubertragungstechnik (~ikrowellen- und Glasfasertech nologie) und besonders durch das sttirmische Vordringen der Mikroelek tronik, die zu einer digitalen Nachrichtentibertragung und Nachrichten verarbeitung (mit den Methoden der Datenverarbeitung) geradezu heraus fordert, so daB diese beiden klassischen Teilgebiete der Nachrichten technik inzwischen zu einer umfassenden Kommunikationstechnik zusammen wachsen konnten. Besonders auffallig ist diese Entwicklung zu einem umfassenden Kommuni kationssystem in der Fernsprechtechnik, die sich in den letzten Jahren zu einer Telekommunikationstechnik erweitert hat. Zum konventionellen FernsprechanschluB kommen bei der modernen Btirokommunikation ein effek tiverer Btirofernschreiber, vor allem aber Kommunikationseinrichtungen ftir Festbilder hinzu. Graphik und Schrift konnen dabei papiergebunden mit Fernkopierern tibertragen und bildschirmgebunden auf einem Fernseh empfanger (Bildschirmtext) wiedergegeben werden. Angestrebt wird eine gemeinsame 'Ubertragung all dieser Dienste tiber ein diensteintegrieren des Digitalnetz (ISDN). Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Eine unabdingbare Voraussetzung für den Betrieb universeller verteilter DV-Systeme ist eine dezentral durchgeführte Zugriffssynchronisation. Diese muß für global konkurrierende Zugriffe zu verteilten Daten das Korrektheitskriterium der Serialisierbarkeit garantieren. Es gibt zwar eine weitgehend ausgereifte Theorie für die Serialisierbarkeit und teilweise auch für die (zentrale) Zugriffssynchronisation, aber eine Theorie zur dezentralen Verwaltung steht noch aus. Das Kernproblem ist, daß es keinen global einheitlich beobachtbaren Systemzustand eines verteilten Systems gibt und daß trotzdem global gültige Entscheidungen zu treffen sind. In. der vorliegenden Arbeit wird nun ein neuer, systematischer Ansatz vorgestellt, der dieses Problem für die Zugriffssynchro nisation löst und der stets nur eine räumlich und zeitlich exakt begrenzte Kooperation verteilter Verwaltungsinstanzen erfordert. Zwei neue darauf aufbauende Verfahren zur dezentra len Zugriffssynchronisation werden beschrieben. Ihre Korrekt heit wird formal nachgewiesen. Das erste der neuen Verfahren wurde auch experimentell untersucht, sodaß hierfür quantitative Leistungsaussagen gemacht werden können. Der vorliegende Band entspricht meiner von der Fakultät für Informatik der Universität Karlsruhe genehmigten Dissertation. Die mündliche prüfung fand am 3.11.1982 statt.
