The Study, which was held in Sopron over the period 16-26 Augus t 1984, had a very special character. Sixty-eight researchers from sixteen coun tr~es participated, most of them contributing papers or experiments. In addition many members of IIASA's Young Scientists Summer Program were present. All of these participants were heavily involved in dis cussions; discussions that were not limited to the allotted time but extended well into the evenings and nights. By design, the Study gathered specialists from many disciplines, from philosophy and cultur al anthropology, through decision theory, game theory and economics, to engineering and applied mathematics. Although this theory is still in statu nascendi, it has been developed in recent years to the point where a coherent presentation is possible. The book…is intended as an introductory text for students of physics, chemistry or biology. This interdisciplinary aim has necessitated a choice of material based on the lowest common denominator of physicists and biologists. In particular, the predominantly mathematical and biological sections have been presented at the most elementary l.evel possible. The less mathematically inclined reader can omit Sections (5.3)-(5.5), (5.7)-(5.10), (6.2), (6.3), (9.1)-(9.3), (12.1) and (13.3) without losing the overall view. For critical reading of the manuscript, for discussions and for many useful suggestions I wish to thank M. Eigen (Gottingen), w.e. Gardiner (Austin), D. Porschke (Gottingen), P. In this way a critical mass was achieved whereby an infor mation transfer was induced between groups who had previ ously had little or no communication with each other. Obwohl mit wachsendem N unsere Kenntnis von der mikroskopischen Struktur immer geringer wird, werden dennoch die oben angedeuteten Wahrscheinlichkeitsaus sagen über makroskopische Größen um so schärfer, je größer N ist, in dem Sinne, daß wir im Limes N -+ oo wieder zu sicheren Aussagen gelangen. Dieser Zug der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung ist so charakteristisch, daß wir ihn gleich jetzt an einem primitiven Beispiel erläutern wollen. Bei der Gestaltung und Einteilung eines Lehrbuches erscheint es deswegen zweckmaBig, stichwortartig die Anfallssymptome und nicht die Diagnose in den Vordergrund zu riicken. Dies habe ich bei der Bearbeitung des V. Kapitels getan, das den Anfallen bei Schulkindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen gewidmet ist. Wegen der starkeren Variabilitat der Anfallsphiinomenologie bei Neugeborenen, Sauglingen und Kleinkindern wurden die Kapitel III und IV in konventioneller Weise nach dem Alter der Patienten und nach den Anfallssyndromen eingeteilt. In anderen Kapiteln wurde eine Reihe von Problemen besprochen, die in den letzten J ahren anlaBlich unserer verschiedenen Epilepsie-Fortbildungsveranstaltungen auf Interesse praktizierender Arzte gestoBen sind. Das Kapitel VIII enthiilt Angaben iiber die gebrauchlichsten Antiepileptika und iiber verschiedene therapeutische Probleme. Selten, vor allem in spezialisierten Kliniken, angewandte, altere Medikamente wurden in diesem fUr Nichtepileptologen bestimm ten Buch nicht beriicksichtigt. Tagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologie fand nach 76 Jahren erstmals wieder in Heidelberg statt. Wilhelm Erb stand jener Tagung im Jahre 1908 vor. Die Verhandlungen hatten damals u.a. zum Inhalt die Neurosyphilis u…nd die Stellung und den Wert der Neurologie innerhalb der Medizin. Zum Jubiläum der 50. Jahresversammlung in Wiesbaden 1980 hatte Mertens den Druck der Kongreßverhandlungen wieder aufleben lassen. Diesem ersten Kongreßband folgte 1982 (erschienen 1983) der zweite Band zur 75-Jahrfeier der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologie, den Seitz redigierte. 1984 stehen wir ein Jahr vor dem Weltkongreß für Neurologie, der erst mals in Deutschland abgepalten wird. Aus diesem Grunde haben wir uns zu einer bescheideneren Tagung in Heidelberg entschlossen unter Ver zicht auf eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung mit einer unserer europäischen Nachbargesellschaften. Bei der Auswahl der Themen waren Überschneidungen mit dem bevorstehen den Weltkongreß zu vermeiden. Der Vorstand einigte sich deshalb auf die Hauptthemen: Kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen und Neryensystem mit Schwerpunkt auf den Erkrankungen des Herzens und ihren zerebralen Kompli kationen. Die Neurotoxikologie, insbesondere die der Umweltgifte, ent behrt ebenfalls nicht der Brisanz. Das Problem des Hirntodes, unge wolltes Ergebnis der modernen Intensivrnedizin und Voraussetzung für die Transplantationschirurgie lebenswichtiger Organe, nimmt den Neuro logen kategorisch in die Pflicht und unsere wissenschaftliche Gesell schaft in die Verantwortung. Der Beweis des Grothendieckschen Resultats stützt sich im wesentlichen auf (1) die ebenfalls von GROTHENDIECK stammende Charakterisierung relativ schwach kompakter Mengen von Radonmaßen auf lokalkompakten Räumen ([27, Theoreme 2] und [56, 11.9.8]), (2) das Lemma von PHILLIPS ([56, 11.10.3]) und (3) Elemente der Ordnungstheorie. So impliziert die Vorgabe eines Stoneschen Raumes K die Ordnungsvollständig keit des Vektorv~rbandes C(K) ([56, 11.7.7]). Des weiteren stellt der Stonesche Darstellungssatz eine Verbindung her zwischen Stoneschen Räumen und voll ständigen Booleschen Algebren ([56, II. Exerc.1]). (1) und (2) nützen diese Sach verhalte dann entscheidend aus. Im Beweis von Satz 1.4 der vorliegenden Arbeit sind die eben angedeuteten Zusammenhänge im Detail ausgeführt. In der hier von Herrn Sagerer vorgelegten Dissertation wird ein realisiertes und einsatzfahiges wissensbasiertes System zur diagnostischen Interpretation nuklear medizinischer Sequenzszintigramme des schlagenden menschlichen Herzens beschrieben. An dem relativ umfangreichen System haben mehrere Personen gearbeitet. Der wesentli che Beitrag des Autors ist die Entwicklung und Realisierung eines allgemein nutzba ren und leistungsfahigen Formalismus zur Wissensreprasentation, die Erarbeitung, Strukturierung und Eingabe des fur den erwahnten Problemkreis erforderlichen Wissens, die Realisierung eines ebenfalls allgemein einsetzbaren modellgetriebenen Kontroll algorithmus auf der Basis des A -Graphsuchalgorithmus sowie schlie6lich die Integra tion der entwickelten Moduln zu einer ersten lauffahigen Systemversion. Weltweit ist man sich heute einig, daB eine Bandverletzung mit Instabilitat eine anatomische Rekonstruk tion verlangt. Durch dieses Vorgehen kann in frischen Fallen eine Erfolgsquote von urn 90% erreicht werden. Weit vorsichtiger ist die Prognose bei der chronischen Instabilitat zu stellen. Die iiberaus zahlreichen operationstechnischen Verfahren, die im Verlaufe der Jahre durch die Literatur gegangen sind, verraten eine gewisse Unsicherheit und Unzufriedenheit mit dem jeweils Erreichten. Wir selbst hatten mit ortsstandigem Bandersatz recht giinstige Friihergebnisse, muBten aber bei Spatkontrollen, wie viele andere, wieder eine groBere Zahl von Sekundar instabilitaten - wohl durch zunehmende Dehnung der Strukturen - feststellen. Seit iiber 8 Jahren beschaftigen wir uns deshalb in engem Kontakt mit Zentren in England (Jenkins), Frankreich (Lemaire), Siidafrika (Strover) und den USA (Alexander, Weiss) mit dem Bandersatz durch Kohlenstoffasern. Dieses Material besitzt hervorragende biomechanische Eigenschaften und eine auBer ordentlich hohe Biokompatibilitat, leider aber auch eine hohe Fragilitat bei Kriimmungiiber einen kleinen Radius. Die Beschichtung der Bander, ihre Einscheidung bei intraarticularer Anwendung und operationstechnische Besonderheiten vermogen die Rupturgefahr signi fikant zu senken. Wir sind weit davon entfernt, die Kohlenstoffaserbander als das heute einzig 'wahre' Material zu empfehlen, werden aber durch die festgestellten Dauerergebnisse ermutigt, auf diesem Gebiete weiterzufahren. 172 pp. Deutsch.
