The Study, which was held in Sopron over the period 16-26 Augus t 1984, had a very special character. Sixty-eight researchers from sixteen coun tr~es participated, most of them contributing papers or experiments. In addition many members of IIASA's Young Scientists Summer Program were present. All of these participants were heavily involved in dis cussions; discussions that were not limited to the allotted time but extended well into the evenings and nights. Be cause of its interdisciplinary character, the Symposium proved to be very productive and further meetings based on the same principle were held at the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Systemphysiologie in Dortmund in 1977 and 1980. For the 1983 meeting it was decided to return to the ethe real atmosphere of a castle (Burg Rabenstein) set in the beau tiful surroundings of Swiss Franconia. Participation was re stricted to those involved in the theoretical, experimental and clinical applications of ion selective electrodes. In this way a critical mass was achieved whereby an infor mation transfer was induced between groups who had previ ously had little or no communication with each other. Nach seiner ersten Begegnung mit dem Patienten weiB der Arzt aufgrund der Anamnese oder - ausnahmsweise -aufgrund einer Anfallsbeobachtung iiber die Phanomenologie der Anfalle Bescheid, kennt aber die end giiltige Diagnose noch nicht. Bei der Gestaltung und Einteilung eines Lehrbuches erscheint es deswegen zweckmaBig, stichwortartig die Anfallssymptome und nicht die Diagnose in den Vordergrund zu riicken. Dies habe ich bei der Bearbeitung des V. Kapitels getan, das den Anfallen bei Schulkindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen gewidmet ist. Wegen der starkeren Variabilitat der Anfallsphiinomenologie bei Neugeborenen, Sauglingen und Kleinkindern wurden die Kapitel III und IV in konventioneller Weise nach dem Alter der Patienten und nach den Anfallssyndromen eingeteilt. In anderen Kapiteln wurde eine Reihe von Problemen besprochen, die in den letzten J ahren anlaBlich unserer verschiedenen Epilepsie-Fortbildungsveranstaltungen auf Interesse praktizierender Arzte gestoBen sind. Das Kapitel VIII enthiilt Angaben iiber die gebrauchlichsten Antiepileptika und iiber verschiedene therapeutische Probleme. Tagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologie fand nach 76 Jahren erstmals wieder in Heidelberg statt. Wilhelm Erb stand jener Tagung im Jahre 1908 vor. Die Verhandlungen hatten damals u.a. zum Inhalt die Neurosyphilis und die Stellung und den Wert der Neurologie innerhalb der Medizin. Zum Jubiläum der 50. Jahresversammlung in Wiesbaden 1980 hatte Mertens den Druck der Kongreßverhandlungen wieder aufleben lassen. Diesem ersten Kongreßband folgte 1982 (erschienen 1983) der zweite Band zur 75-Jahrfeier der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologie, den Seitz redigierte. 1984 stehen wir ein Jahr vor dem Weltkongreß für Neurologie, der erst mals in Deutschland abgepalten wird. Aus diesem Grunde haben wir uns zu einer bescheideneren Tagung in Heidelberg entschlossen unter Ver zicht auf eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung mit einer unserer europäischen Nachbargesellschaften. Bei der Auswahl der Themen waren Überschneidungen mit dem bevorstehen den Weltkongreß zu vermeiden. Der Vorstand einigte sich deshalb auf die Hauptthemen: Kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen und Neryensystem mit Schwerpunkt auf den Erkrankungen des Herzens und ihren zerebralen Kompli kationen. Man weiB seit langem, daB eine ausreichende Durchblutung der Knochenfragmente neben ihrer sicheren Fixation die wichtigste Bedin gung fUr eine ungestbrte Heilung von Knochenbrtichen ist. Die zunehmende Anwendung verschiedener Osteosyntheseverfahren und die unterschiedlichen Auffassungen zwischen den Anhangern einer konservativen und einer operativen Knochenbruchbehandlung haben die Beantwortung der Fragen der Knochendurchblutung und ihre Veranderungen nach Knochenbriichen und nach Osteosynthesen noch mehr in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses geriickt. Die groBe Zahl der bisher angewandten Methoden zur Messung der Knochendurch blutung zeigt, daB keine dieser Methoden voll zufriedenstellende Ergebnisse liefem konnte. Die qualitativen MeBmethoden weisen zahlreiche Unsicherheitsfaktoren auf und gestatten wegen der Manipulation am GefaBsystem meist nur eine Messung an jedem Versuchstier. Mit Hilfe der qualitativen Methode konnten hervorragende Darstellungen des GefaBsystemes der einzelnen Skelettabschnitte gewonnen werden, ebenso konnten wichtige Erkenntnisse tiber den Stoffwechselumsatz erzielt werden, Messungen der flow-Werte waren aber nicht mbglich. Wir suchten eine Methode, die an jedem Versuchstier mehrere zeitlich getrennte Mes sungen ermbglichte, der Beobachtungszeitraum sollte der Zeit der knbchernen Regeneration angemessen sein. SchlieBlich sollte das MeBverfahren keinen EinfluB haben auf die Regula tion des Kreislaufes und der regionalen Durchblutung. So impliziert die Vorgabe eines Stoneschen Raumes K die Ordnungsvollständig keit des Vektorv~rbandes C(K) ([56, 11.7.7]). Des weiteren stellt der Stonesche Darstellungssatz eine Verbindung her zwischen Stoneschen Räumen und voll ständigen Booleschen Algebren ([56, II. Exerc.1]).
