One recent one major challenge for ILP has been to contribute to the ex- nentialemergenceofDataMining,andtoaddressthehandlingofmulti-relational databases. On the one hand, ILP has developed a body of theoretical results and algorithmicstrategiesforexploringrelationaldata,essentiallybutnotexclusively from a supervised learning viewpoint. These results are directly relevant to an e cient exploration of multi-relational databases. Ontheotherhand,DataMiningmightrequirespeci crelationalstrategiesto be developed, especially with regard to the scalability issue. An excursion to Traquair House and a banquet in the Playfair Library of Old College, University of Edinburgh were also jointly organized. The proceedings of CHARME 2001 have been p- lished as volume 2144 of Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, with Tiziana Margaria and Tom Melham as editors. Each of the 47 papers submitted in the full research category was refereed by at least 3 reviewers who were selected by the Program Committee. Of these submissions, 23 were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2001 also o ered a venue for the presentation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. The first day of the workshop was open to anyone interested in the area of Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) and addressed the topic of CLIR system evaluation. The goal was to identify the actual contribution of evaluation to system development and to determine what could be done in the future to stimulate progress. The second day was restricted to participants in the CLEF 2000 evaluation campaign and to their - periments. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the workshop and provides a record of the campaign. CLEF is currently an activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital - braries, funded by the EC Information Society Technologies to further research in digital library technologies. The rst two CHES Workshops were held in Massachusetts, and this was the rst Workshop to be held in Europe. There was a large… number of submissions this year, and in response the technical program was extended to 2 1/2 days. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, many excellent submissions were made. Selecting the papers for this year's CHES was not an easy task, and weregretthatwehadtorejectseveralveryinterstingpapersduetotheac l kof time. There were 66 submitted contributions this year, of which 31, or 47%, were selected for presentation. If we look at the number of submitted papers at CHES '99 (42 papers) and CHES 2001 (51 papers), we observe a steady increase. We interpret this as a continuing need for a workshop series which combines theory and practice for integrating strong security features into modern communications and computer applications. In addition to the submitted contributions, Ross Anderson from Cambridge University, UK, and Adi Shamir from The Weizmann Institute, Israel, gave invited talks. T…he Workshop on Algorithm Engineering covers research on all aspects of the subject. The goal is to present recent research results and to identify and explore directions for future research. Previous meetings were held in Venice (1997), Saarbruc ken (1998), and London (1999). Papers were solicited describing original research in all aspects of algorithm engineering, including: - Development of software repositories and platforms which allow the use of and experimentation with e cient discrete algorithms. - Novel uses of discrete algorithms in other disciplines and the evaluation of algorithms for realistic environments. - Methodological issues including standards in the context of empirical - search on algorithms and data structures. - Methodological issues regarding the process of converting user requirements into e cient algorithmic solutions and implementations. The program committee accepted 16 from a total of 30 submissions. The program committee meeting was conducted electronically. The criteria for sel- tion were originality, quality, and relevance to the subject area of the workshop. Considerable e ort was devoted to the evaluation of the submissions and to p- viding the authors with feedback. Each submission was reviewed by at least four program committee members (assisted by subreferees). Covi & Kling [7] argue that understanding the wider context of technology use is essential to understanding di…gital library use and its - plementation in different social worlds. Recent health informatics research also - gues that social and organisational factors can determine the success or failure of healthcare IT developments [8, 11, 12]. Heathfield [11] suggests that this is due to the complex, autonomous nature of the medical discipline and the specialized (clinician or software engineer) approach to system development. Negative reactions to these systems is often due to inappropriate system design and poor implementation. H- ever, there may be other less obvious social and political repercussions of information system design and deployment. Symon et al [26] have identified, within a hospital scenario, how social structures and work practices can be disrupted by technology implementation. Although these systems often deal with sensitive, personal infor- tion, other system design research has found that apparently innocuous data can be perceived as a threat to social and political stability [1,2,3]. To understand the impact of DLs within the medical profession, an in-depth evaluation is required of the int- duction and later development of these applications within their specific social and organisational settings. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose…spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book 'Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena' participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). The next PaCT conferences were held in Obninsk (near Moscow), August 30 September 4, 1993; in St.Petersburg, September 12 15, 1995; in Yaroslavl September 9 12, 1997; and in Pushkin (near St.Petersburg) from September 6 10, 1999. The PaCT proceedings are published by Springer- Verlag in the LNCS series. PaCT-2001 was jointly organized by the Institute of Computational Mat- maticsandMathematicalGeophysicsoftheRussianAcademyofSciences(No- sibirsk), the State University, and the State Technical University of Novosibirsk. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists working with theory, architecture, software, hardware, and solution of large-scale problems in order to provide integrated discussions on parallel computing technologies. The conference attracted about 100 participants from around the world. - thors from 17 countries submitted 81 papers. The 29 papers collected here out of the 79 ones that were submitted, dem- strate well the range of results achieved in several areas such as agent te- nologies, models and architectures, web systems, information integration, m- dleware technologies, federated and multi-database systems. The papers th- selves, however, do not convey the lively excitement of the conference itself, and the continuing spirit of cooperation and communication across disciplines that has been the hallmark of these conferences.
