The three famous chemists Perkin, Kipping and their collaborator Lapworth married three sisters: Mina, Lily, and Kathleen Holland. The three Holland sisters kept their husbands in close and very productive collaboration throughout their lives, thereby greatly increasing their scientific output. They functioned as a productive scientific family. However, the life and work of the men is thoroughly documented, but little is known about their wives. Professor Eugene G. Rochow, a world-renowned scientist, wrote this biographical historical novel with the help of a grandson, Dr. Brian Kipping. Professor Rochow did not intend to write a bare-bones biography. He took care to make the book factually accurate. Wherever t here are no facts, he has not hesitated to flesh out the account with imagination and actual experience of others in order to make the text more readable. 220 pp. Englisch.

ILP2001 was co-located withthe3rdinternationalworkshoponLogic,Learning,andLanguage(LLL2001), and nearly co-located with the joint 12th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML2001) and 5th European conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD2001). Continuing a series of international conferences devoted to Inductive Logic Programming and Relational Learning, ILP2001 is the central annual event for researchersinterestedinlearningstructuredknowledgefromstructuredexamples and background knowledge. One recent one major challenge for ILP has been to contribute to the ex- nentialemergenceofDataMining,andtoaddressthehandlingofmulti-relational databases. On the one hand, ILP has developed a body of theoretical results and algorithmicstrategiesforexploringrelationaldata, essentiallybutnotexclusively from a supervised learning viewpoint. These results are directly relevant to an e cient exploration of multi-relational databases. Ontheotherhand,DataMiningmightrequirespeci crelationalstrategiesto be developed, especially with regard to the scalability issue. The near-colocation of ILP2001 with ECML2001-PKDD2001 was an incentive to increase cro- fertilization between the ILP relational savoir-faire and the new problems and learning goals addressed and to be addressed in Data Mining. Thirty-seven papers were submitted to ILP, among which twenty-one were selected and appear in these proceedings. Several non-disjoint trends can be observed, along an admittedly subjective clustering. On the theoretical side, a new mode of inference is proposed by K. Inoue, analog to the open-ended mode of Bayesian reasoning (where the frontier - tween induction and abduction wanes). New learning re nement operators are proposed by L. Badea, while R. Otero investigates negation-handling settings. 276 pp. Englisch.

Companies in all domains identify that software de nes the competitive edge of their products. These developments require us to constantly search for new approaches to increase the productivity and quality of our software - velopment and to decrease the cost of software maintenance. Generative and component-based technologies hold considerablepromise with respect to achi- ing these goals. GCSE 2001 constituted another important step forward and provided a platform for academic and industrial researchers to exchange ideas. These proceedings represent the third conference on generative and com- nent-based software engineering. The conference originated as a special track on generative programming from the Smalltalk and Java in Industry and - ucation Conference (STJA), organized by the working group 'Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering' of the 'Gesellschaft fur Informatik' FG 2.1.9 'Object-Oriented Software Engineering.' However, the conference has evolved substantially since then, with its own, independent stature, invited speakers, and, most importantly, a stable and growing community. This year's conference attracted 43 submissions from all over the world, - dicating the broad, international interest in the research eld. Based on careful review by the program committee, 14 papers were selected for presentation. I would like to thank the members of the program committee, all renowned - perts, for their dedication in preparing thorough reviews of the submissions. 192 pp. Englisch.

Covi & Kling [7] argue that understanding the wider context of technology use is essential to understanding digital library use and its - plementation in different social worlds. Recent health informatics research also - gues that social and organisational factors can determine the success or failure of healthcare IT developments [8, 11, 12]. Heathfield [11] suggests that this is due to the complex, autonomous nature of the medical discipline and the specialized (clinician or software engineer) approach to system development. Negative reactions to these systems is often due to inappropriate system design and poor implementation. H- ever, there may be other less obvious social and political repercussions of information system design and deployment. Symon et al [26] have identified, within a hospital scenario, how social structures and work practices can be disrupted by technology implementation. Although these systems often deal with sensitive, personal infor- tion, other system design research has found that apparently innocuous data can be perceived as a threat to social and political stability [1,2,3]. To understand the impact of DLs within the medical profession, an in-depth evaluation is required of the int- duction and later development of these applications within their specific social and organisational settings. However, as Covi & Kling [7] have highlighted, there are few high-level theories that aid designers in understanding the implication of these issues for DL design and implementation. 480 pp. Englisch.

Information agent technology has become one of the major key technologies for the Internet and the World Wide Web. It mainly emerged as a response to the challenges of cyberspace from both the technological and human user perspective. Development of information agents requires expertise from di erent research disciplines such as Arti cial Intelligence (AI), advanced databases and knowledge base systems, distributed information systems, information retrieval, and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The fth international workshop on Cooperative Information Agents (CIA) continued the tradition by capturing the intrinsic interdisciplinary nature of the above research area by calling for contributions from di erent research communities, and by promoting open and informative discussions on all related topics. In keeping with tradition, the workshop featured a sequence of regular and invited talks of excellence given by leading experts in the eld. This year the topics of the talks are mainly on the challenges of information agents in the upcoming age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. These challenges are in particular due to the necessity of an e cient utilization, evolution, and trust management of information agents for user-oriented information search, pro- sion, and visualization in networked computing environments with small, mobile, and embedded devices. A di erent issue concerns the potential of agent-based support of massive distributed data warehousing worldwide. 304 pp. Englisch.

This conference series was formerly called the International Workshop on Implementing Automata (WIA) This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains all the papers that were presented at CIAA 2000, and also the abstracts of the poster papers that were displayed during the conference. The conference addressed issues in automata application and implemen- tion. The topics of the papers presented at this conference ranged from automata applications in software engineering, natural language and speech recognition, and image processing, to new representations and algorithms for e cient imp- mentation of automata and related structures. Automata theory is one of the oldest areas in computer science. Research in automata theory has always been motivated by its applications since its early stages of development. In the 1960s and 1970s, automata research was moti- ted heavily by problems arising from compiler construction, circuit design, string matching, etc. In recent years, many new applications have been found in various areas of computer science as well as in other disciplines. Examples of the new applications include statecharts in object-oriented modeling, nite transducers in natural language processing, and nondeterministic nite-state models in c- munication protocols. Many of the new applications do not and cannot simply apply the existing models and algorithms in automata theory to their problems. 360 pp. Englisch.

They were - troduced in 1978 by John H. Holland, the father of genetic algorithms, and since then they have been applied to domains as diverse as autonomous robotics, trading agents, and data mining. At the Second International Workshop on Learning Classi er Systems (IWLCS 99), held July 13, 1999, in Orlando, Florida, active researchers reported on the then current state of learning classi er system research and highlighted some of the most promising research directions. The most interesting contri- tions to the meeting are included in the book Learning Classi er Systems: From Foundations to Applications, published as LNAI 1813 by Springer-Verlag. The following year, the Third International Workshop on Learning Classi er Systems (IWLCS 2000), held September 15{16 in Paris, gave participants the opportunity to discuss further advances in learning classi er systems. We have included in this volume revised and extended versions of thirteen of the papers presented at the workshop. 288 pp. Englisch.

SAIG 2001 was held as an ACM SIGPLAN workshop co-located with the International Conference on Principles, Logics, and Implementations of High-level Programming Languages (PLI). As the commercial production of software systems moves toward being a traditional industry, automation will necessarily play a more substantial role in this industry, just as it plays a key role in the production of traditional commodities. SAIG aims at promoting the development and the application of foundational techniques for supporting automatic program generation. A key goal of SAIG is to provide a unique forum for both theoreticians and practitioners to present their results and ideas to an audience from a diverse background. This year we are fortunate to have three in uential invited speakers: Krzysztof Czarnecki (DaimlerChrysler), Tim Sheard (OGI School of Science and Engineering), and Mitchell Wand (Northeastern University). The proceedings include abstracts of the invited talks, and an invited paper by Tim Sheard. Seven technical papers and two position papers were presented at SAIG 2001. 236 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The fascinating phenomenon ferromagnetism is far from being fully understood, although it surely belongs to the oldest problems of solid state physics. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book 'Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena' participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). Twenty-six invited spe- ers from ten di erent countries together with fty- ve further participants, who presented contributions in form of posters, spent three days together discussing in an enthusiastic and fertile manner the hot topics of band-ferromagnetism. 408 pp. Englisch.

Each set of notes presents a self-contained guide to a current research area and has an extensive bibliography. In addition, most of the notes contain detailed proofs of the key results. The notes start from a level suitable for first year graduate students in applied mathematics, mathematical analysis or numerical analysis, and proceed to current research topics. The reader should therefore be able to gain quickly an insight into the important results and techniques in each area without recourse to the large research literature. Current (unsolved) problems are also described and directions for future research are given. This book is also suitable for professional mathematicians who require a succint and accurate account of recent research in areas parallel to their own, and graduates in mathematical sciences. 296 pp. Englisch.

The conference at which the papers in this volume were presented was the ninth international conference on the topic of Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS 2001), and was held in Trento, Italy on September 5-7, 2001. Like the previous conferences, CoopIS 2001 has been remarkably successful in bringing together representatives of many di erent elds, spanning the entire range of e ective web-based Cooperative Information Systems, and with interests ranging from industrial experience to original research concepts and results. The 29 papers collected here out of the 79 ones that were submitted, dem- strate well the range of results achieved in several areas such as agent te- nologies, models and architectures, web systems, information integration, m- dleware technologies, federated and multi-database systems. The papers th- selves, however, do not convey the lively excitement of the conference itself, and the continuing spirit of cooperation and communication across disciplines that has been the hallmark of these conferences. We would especially like to thank our keynote speakers: Philip A. Bernstein (Microsoft Research, USA), Edward E. Cobb (BEA Systems, USA), and Ma- izio Lenzerini (Universit`a di Roma La Sapienza , Italy) for providing a portrait of the best contemporary work in the eld. We would also like to thank the many people who made CoopIS 2001 possible. 468 pp. Englisch.
