GUTMANN in his pioneering article 'The Subterranean Economy' (Financial Analysts Journal, Nov/Dec 1977, p. 24- 27) was first to point out that unreported economic activity cannot (or, at least, can no longer) be considered as a 'quantite negligeable'. Challenged by GUTMANN's hypothesis many economists have then tried to assess the quantitative and qualitative importance of the shadow economy (commonly also known as the underground, or subterranean, or black, or unreported economy, and by other names). There seems to be wide agreement nowadays that the shadow economy has not only reached a substantial portion of total economic activity in both Eastern and Western countries but that it is also growing at rates which can no longer be experienced in the official sector. The existence of a considerable volume of unreported economic activities implies that important macroeconomic variables are biased in the official statistics. The artery can be visualized by means of vertebral angiography. This technique of examination was carried out for the first time in 1933 by Moniz and co-workers (Moniz and Alves 1933, Moniz et al. 1933). During the decades that followed, angiographic techniques improved considera bly, with the result that more details of the angioarchitecture of the posterior cranial fossa could be demonstrated. Satisfactory visualization of the AICA and its branches depends greatly on the use of subtraction, and this is the reason why detailed reports on the angiographic appearance of the artery were for the greater part published after 1965, when subtraction techniques were more consistently used (Takahashi et al. 1968, 1974; Gerald et al. 1973). The angiographic appearance of the various segments of the AICA in the lateral projection, both in the normal situation and in the presence of tumors, has been studied by Naidich et al. (1976a, b). Diese Erfahrung fUhrte von lokal allzu radikalen operativen und ra diotherapeutischen Methoden weg und hin zu fruhzeitigen systemischen prophylak tischen bzw. adjuvanten Behandlungsformen. 1m individuellen Verlauf zeigt der Tumor eine begrenzte Autonomie und eine vieWiltige Abhangigkeit von Bedingun gen auf der Seite des Wirtsorganismus. So gehoren zu den prognostischen Faktoren nicht nur histologische Merkmale, Hormonrezeptoren und lokoregionale Ausbrei tung des Tumors, sondern auch Alter, Menopausen-Status und Allgemeinzustand der Patienten wie auch endokrine Parameter, etwa der Prolaktin-Spiegel. Die Wirk samkeit der Antiostrogene, Gestagene und Inhibitoren wie Aminoglutethimid zeu gen von der endokrinen Steuerbarkeit des Tumors. Das Mamma-Karzinom gehort femer zu den Tumoren mit gutem Ansprechen auf Zytostatika. Remissionen und Dberlebensverlangerung sind eindeutige Erfolge der palliativen Kombinations Chemotherapie.
