Few organizations today can a ord the resources and time to replicate market-tested capabilities. Yet, the promise of COTS products is too often not realized in practice. There have been more failures than successes in using COTS software products. The research and software practitioner communities have been working with COTS-based software systems for a number of years. There is now su cient documented experience in the community to collect, analyze, and disseminate success stories, common failings, lessons-learned, and research advances. Smart cards for personal identi cation, e-banking, software-controlled me- cal tools, airbags in cars, and autopilots for aircraft control are only some exam…ples that illustrate how everyday life depends on the good behavior of software. Consequently, techniques and methods for the development of hi- quality, dependable software systems are a central research topic in computer science. A fundamental approach to this area is to use formal speci cation and veri cation. Speci cation languages allow one to describe the crucial p- perties of software systems in an abstract, mathematically precise, and implementation-independent way. By formal veri cation, one can then prove that an implementation really has the desired, speci ed properties. Although this formal methods approach has been a research topic for more than 30 years, its practical success is still restricted to domains in which devel- ment costs are of minor importance. Two aspects are crucial to widen the application area of formal methods: - Formal speci cation techniques have to be smoothly integrated into the software and program development process. - The techniques have to be applicable to reusable software components. This way, the quality gain can be exploited for more than one system, thereby justifying the higher development costs. Starting from these considerations, Peter Muller has developed new te- niques for the formal speci cation and veri cation of object-oriented so- ware. The speci cation techniques are declarative and implementati- independent. They can be used for object-oriented design and programming. 312 pp. Englisch.

Every evening, before or after d- ner, we always sit in front of the television and watch the animation program, which is originally produced and shown for children. We find ourselves…becoming younger while immerged in the interesting plot of the animation: how the princess is first killed and then rescued, how the little rat defeats the big cat, etc. But what we have found in those animation programs are not only interesting plots, but also a big chance for the application of computer science and artificial intelligence techniques. As is well known, the cost of producing animated movies is very high, even with the use of computer graphics techniques. Turning a story in text form into an animated movie is a long and complicated procedure. We came to the c- clusion that many parts of this process could be automated by using artificial - telligence techniques. It is actually a challenge and test for machine intelligence. So we decided to explore the possibility of a full life cycle automation of c- puter animation generation. By full life cycle we mean the generation process of computer animation from a children s story in natural language text form to the final animated movie. It is of course a task of immense difficulty. However, we decided to try our best and to see how far we could go. 400 pp. Englisch.

Donabedian [1) pro posed a framework for thinking about the quality of medical care that separates quality into three components: structure, process, and outcome. An instructive analogy for understanding this framework is to imagine a food critic evaluating the quality of a restaurant. The critic might comment on the decoration and lighting ofthe restaurant, how close the tables are to each other, the extent ofthe wine list and where the chef trained. These are all evaluations of the restaurant structure. In addition, the critic might comment on whether the service was courteous and timely - measures of process. Finally, the critic might comment on outcomes like customer satisfaction or food poisoning. Similarly, to a health care critic, structure is the physical and human resources used to deliver medi cal care. Processes are the actual treatments offered to patients. Finally,outcomes are what happens to patients, for example, mortality, quality of life,and satisfac tion with care (Table 1). The phrase tumour-like is applied to lesions that clinically or morpholog ically resemble neoplasms but do not behave biologically in a neo plastic manner. They are included in this publication because they give rise to problems in differential diagnosis and because of the un clear distinction between neoplasms and certain non-neoplastic le sions. Synonyms are listed only if they have been widely used or are considered helpful for the understanding of the lesion. In such cases, the preferred term is given first and followed by the synonym. The current revision includes the recognition of a preinvasive le sion, prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, which is commonly associat ed with carcinoma. It also recognises the paracrine-endocrine ele ments in prostate carcinoma and other subtypes of adenocarcinoma. Although the emphasis of the classification is on histological typ ing, consideration should also be given to the degree of differentia tion and nuclear anaplasia, extent of local spread, vascular and lym phatic invasion, and the occurrence of metastasis.
