In capital-intensive industries like chemicals and steel, the out-of-pocket costs of excess capacity and the opportunity costs of underuti lized capacity have been important factors driving the growth of exchanges for improving demand and supply coordination through e-Business platforms. Stefan Spinler addresses in his dissertation one of the most interesting aspects of this evolution for OR/MS, the parallel development of long-term and short-term markets for capacity and output, accompanied by a range of exotic options and forwards as the basic mechanisms supporting transac tions. This is a fascinating research topic because it builds on the powerful framework of real options, while connecting directly to key operations deci sions (capacity planning, staffing, maintenance, and so forth) of the plants and technologies whose output is the focus of contracts. From the perspec tive of practice, the use of these contracting mechanisms, as facilitated by a new breed of B2B exchanges, represents an opportunity for further improving supply chain performance and capital asset productivity. 160 pp. Englisch.

The conference takes place every three years (p- vi…ous ones were held in 1996 and 1999 in Amal too) and aims to bring together researchers in the eld of security in communication networks to foster coop- ation and the exchange of ideas. The main topics included all technical aspects of data security including: anonymity implementation, authentication, key distribution, block ciphers, - erating systems security, complexity-based cryptography, privacy, cryptanalysis, protocols, digital signatures, public key encryption, electronic money, public key infrastructure, hash functions, secret sharing, identi cation, surveys, and the state of the art. The program committee received 90 submissions in electronic format from 5 continents of which 24 were selected for presentation in 8 sessions. We had two invited talks, one by Eyal Kushilevitz from the Technion, Israel on Some ApplicationsofPolynomialsfortheDesignofCryptographicProtocols, andthe other by Ueli Maurer from ETH, Zurich, on Secure Multi-Party Computation Made Simple. Due to the high number of submissions, the reviewing phase was a very challenging process, and many good submissions had to be rejected. Such devices will provide data access to mobile users as they move within buildings, cities, or across the globe. This new infrastructure presents tremendous challenges for data management technology, including: huge scale; variable and intermittent connectivity; location and context-aware applications; bandwidth, power, and devi- size limitations; and multimedia data delivery across hybrid networks and systems. Traditional data management technologies such as query processing, transaction management, workflow, business process management, and metadata management must all be reevaluated in this emerging environment. Furthermore, nontraditional issues such as the semantics of mobile data, location-dependent querying, broadcast and multicast delivery, and caching/prefetching techniques must all be addressed. The ability to track people as they move about their daily tasks raises serious issues of security and privacy. This conference is the fourth in the Mobile Data Management series, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for the management of data in mobile, pervasive, and wearable computing. MDM 2000 and 2001 were in Hong Kong and MDM 2002 was in Singapore. Eighty-seven papers were submitted to the conference from 23 countries and were subject to a rigorous review procedure. Every paper had three or four independent reviews. There was a record number of submissions this year and in response the technical program was extended to 3 days. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, there have been again many excellent submissions. Selecting the papers for this year's CHES was not an easy task, and we regret that we could not accept many contributions due to the limited availability of time. There were 101 submissions this year, of which 39 were selected for presentation. We continue to observe a steady increase over previous years: 42 submissions at CHES '99, 51 at CHES 2000, and 66 at CHES 2001. We interpret this as a continuing need for a workshop series that c- bines theory and practice for integrating strong security features into modern communicationsandcomputerapplications. Inadditiontothesubmittedcont- butions, Jean-Jacques Quisquater (UCL, Belgium), Sanjay Sarma (MIT, USA) and a panel of experts on hardware random number generation gave invited talks. As in the previous years, the focus of the Workshop is on all aspects of cr- tographic hardware and embedded system security. Neuware -In 1942 Guderley investigated the behaviour of the typical parameters near the axis when he was studying the focusing of cylindrical shock waves by solving the partial differential equations using the similarity method. He pre dicted an infin…itely large pressure and temperature at the axis of convergence. Since then many theoretical and experimental studies have been performed on shock focusing as an energy source for the generation of very high pressures and temperatures. Many experimental investigations confirmed the idea of Guderley that at the centre of convergence extremely high pressures and temperatures can be obtained. At the Technical University of Darmstadt we performed a numerical exper iment to investigate the shock-focusing phenomenon, and many test problems were solved using the Rusanov scheme. At the centre of convergence we ob tained extremely high pressures and temperatures. The results of these inves tigations were compared with the experimental work done at the Max Planck Institute for Fluid Dynamics Research in Gottingen. The three-dimensional time-dependent shock wave which was created by a centred gas volume under high pressure interacts with the plane walls of the cavity and leads to a focusing effect after the explosion. The symmetry-preserving character of the invari ant difference scheme under use was proved numerically by calculation over a long interval of time. Progress in developing new equipment has called for a better understand ing of the physical peculiarities pertaining to the action of designed structures in real conditions. This is necessary for increasing the accuracy of the analysis and making these structures more reliable. It has been found that classical determined perturbations are not principal and that determinism-based methods of classical mechanics prove insufficient for understanding and explaining physical effects that arise at the operation of instruments located on moving objects, the vibration of rocket engines, the motion of a vehicle, and the action of wind and seismic loads. Therefore the necessity arose for devising a new physical model to analyze these dynamic processes and, in particular, for creating a new mathematical apparatus that would allow us to take into account non-deterministic external excitations. The theory of random processes that had been developed well enough as applied to problems of radio engineering and automatic control, where the effect produced by random excitations appeared to be commensurable with that of deterministic excitations and where the ignoring of the random ex citations would bring about incorrect results, became such an apparatus. 468 pp. Englisch.

The picture of chromosomes that is emerging is that of dynamic breathing organelles actively regulating the flow of genetic information from the genome. Indeed chromatin is so fluid that even maintaining gene quiescence is an active process and is tightly regulated. Chromatin dynamics is a consequence of protein complexes that modify histones, remove histone modifications, mobi lize nucleosomes or stabilize nucleosomes. Awide variety of such com plexes have now been described. Some are abundant and may play glo bal roles in chromosome fluidity and function. Others are more rare and specialized for specific functions at discreet loci. Moreover, several complexes share biochemical activities and genetic studies suggest overlapping functions in vivo.
