This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -What is Computational Hydraulics Computational hydraulics is one of the many fields of science in which the application of computers gives rise to a new way of working, which is intermediate between purely theoretical and experimen…tal. It is concerned with simulation ofthe flow of water, together with its consequences, using numerical methods on com puters. There is not a great deal of difference with computational hydrodynamics or computational fluid dynamics, but these terms are too much restricted to the fluid as such. It seems to be typical of practical problems in hydraulics that they are rarely directed to the flow by itself, but rather to some consequence of it, such as forces on obstacles, transport of heat, sedimentation of a channel or decay of a pollutant. All these subjects require very similar numerical methods and this is why they are treated together in this book. Therefore, I have preferred to use the term computational hydraulics. Accordingly, I have attempted to show the wide field of application by giving examples of a great variety of such practical problems. Purpose of the Book It is getting a normal situation that an engineer is required to solve some engineering problem involving fluid flow, using standard and general-purpose computer programs available in many organizations. In many instances, the software has been designed with the claim that no numerical or computer-science expertise is needed in using them. 196 pp. Englisch.

This first Metastasis Congress in the…FRG was organized in conjunction with the German Association of Cancer Research (SEK) of the German Cancer Society. The congress topic generated tremendous interest and attracted about 400 scientists from 22 countries. Most participants came from Europe, Israel, and the United States. Why did we organize the Metastasis Congress Only about 50% of all people who develop some form of cancer are curable. Despite improved patient care and increasingly innovative and effective techniques for diagnosing and treating primary cancers, the development of secondary cancer colonies, i. e. , metastasis, can not be prevented and is the major cause of death. In the Federal Republic of Germany there are still as many as 160 000 cancer patients per year who succumb to their disease, often after periods of terrible suffering, and this overall figure is not improving. Partly because of the complexity of the process, basic research on metastasis has lagged behind other disciplines such as carcino genesis and cancer genetics. Metastasis formation involves the ability of malig nant cells to invade adjacent tissue and to penetrate into lymphatic or blood circulatory systems, or both, and to spread to near or distant sites to form new tumor colonies. Neuware -These are the Proceedings of the 2nd International Metastasis Congress of the Metastasis Research Society which took place in the town hall (Stadthalle) of Heidelberg, FRG, in September, 1988. This first Metastasis Congress in the FRG…was organized in conjunction with the German Association of Cancer Research (SEK) of the German Cancer Society. The congress topic generated tremendous interest and attracted about 400 scientists from 22 countries. Most participants came from Europe, Israel, and the United States. Why did we organize the Metastasis Congress Only about 50% of all people who develop some form of cancer are curable. Despite improved patient care and increasingly innovative and effective techniques for diagnosing and treating primary cancers, the development of secondary cancer colonies, i. e. , metastasis, can not be prevented and is the major cause of death. In the Federal Republic of Germany there are still as many as 160 000 cancer patients per year who succumb to their disease, often after periods of terrible suffering, and this overall figure is not improving. Partly because of the complexity of the process, basic research on metastasis has lagged behind other disciplines such as carcino genesis and cancer genetics. Metastasis formation involves the ability of malig nant cells to invade adjacent tissue and to penetrate into lymphatic or blood circulatory systems, or both, and to spread to near or distant sites to form new tumor colonies. Diese Gefahr wird durch die Ni kotinabhängigkeit vergrößert; denn süchtiges Rauchen ist nicht leicht zu durchbrechen, so daß die Vergiftung fortgesetzt wird. Eugen Roth sagt das in einem Vierzeiler: 'Bei Nikotin und Alkohol/fühlt sich der Mensch besonders wohl / Und doch, es macht ihn nichts so hin / wie Alkohol und Nikotin.' Daher kann es nicht verwundern, daß Rau chen kontrovers beurteilt wird. Die Einstellung zum Tabak war von jeher zwiespältig. Nachdem mit der Neuen Welt der Tabak entdeckt (Columbus 1492) und nach Europa exportiert wurde (1519), ent stand große Begeisterung. Tabak war heiß begehrt. Bald aber kam auch Kritik auf. Befürworter und Gegner ergingen sich in starken Worten. Die Kontroverse wurde auf medizinischer, ästhetischer, ethischer, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Ebene geführt. Tabak wurde als Heilmittel hochgelobt, z.B. von R. Burton in einer Schrift über Melan cholie (1621): 'Tabak, göttlicher, einzigartiger, alles übertreffender Tabak, der alle Wundermittel weit übertrifft, trinkbares Gold und Stein der Weisen, ein souveränes Heilmittel gegen alle Krankheiten.' Ähnlich könnte ein Süchtiger über seine Droge sprechen. Tabak wurde sogar gegen Pest und Krebs empfohlen. 196 pp. Deutsch.
