Hans Rumpf und den mannigfachen Erfahrungen von Probenuntersuchungen pulverförmiger Stoffe, die am Institut für Mechanische Verfah renstechnik, Karlsruhe, vorliegen. Diese Erfahrungen zeigen, daß Genauigkeitsanalysen bei Messungen von Kenngrößen pulver förmiger Stoffe gleich welcher Art (Partikelgröße, Partikelform, Wirkstoffgehalt) in starkem Maße von den Probenahmebedingungen abhängig sind, und zwar in umso stärkerem Maße je größer die Einzelpartikeln im Vergleich zur Probengröße sind. So umfang reich auch die Literatur über die Probenahme ist, so fehlt es doch an einem Werk, das über die für den Praktiker wesentlichen theo retischen Gesichtspunkte der Probenahme pulverförmiger Stoffe un terrichten kann. Ich hoffe, mit diesem Buch die Lücke bis zu einem gewissen Grad schließen zu können. Die Arbeit ist in erster Linie als Hilfsbuch für den P;-aktiker gedacht, der sich in breitem Rahmen mit den Problemen der Probenahme pul verförmiger Stoffe beschäftigen muß. Dazu gehören wohl in erster Linie Aufbereitungstechniker und Ingenieure der mechanischen Ver fahrenstechnik. Aber auch Chemikern und Anwendungstechnikern ver mag das Buch wertvolle Hinweise und Anregungen zu geben. Ich habe mich bemüht, das Buch so abzufassen, daß es mit möglichst wenig Mathematik verständlich ist, auch wenn beim ersten Durchblättern vielleicht erschreckend viele Formeln auffallen. In allen Mehr Elektronensystemen und in den Fragen der Feinstruktur der Spektrallinien versagte aber dieses Modell vollig, und selbst in den Einzel-Elektron-Problemen erschienen die Grundlagen des Modells als plausible, aber willkiirliche Annahmen. Dan n kam die Quantenmechanik und anderte alles mit einem Schlag. Die Ratsel waren gelost, das Verhalten der Atome konnte mit eindeutigen und logischen Mitteln erklart und im Prinzip berechnet werden. Selten, vielleicht noch nie in der Geistesgeschichte, haben so wenig Leute soviel in so kurzer Zeit geleistet. Innerhalb weniger Jahre, von 1925 bis 1928, waren die Prinzipien festgelegt, auf denen die Spezifitat und die Stabilitat der Atome beruhen; es wurden die Grundlagen der chemischen Bindung aufgedeckt und ebenso die Grundlagen der Struktur der Metalle und anderer Festkorper. Unfortunately, most drugs used in treating cancer kill both normal and abnormal cells. However, more cancer cells than normal cells can be destroyed by the drug because tumor cells usually exhibit different growth kinetics than normal cells. To capitalize on this last fact, cell kinetics must be studied by formulating mathematical models of normal and abnormal cell growth. These models allow the therapeutic and harmful effects of cancer drugs to be simulated quantitatively. The combined cell and drug models can be used to study the effects of different methods of administering drugs. The least harmful method of drug administration, according to a given criterion, can be found by applying optimal control theory. The prerequisites for reading this book are an elementary knowledge of ordinary differential equations, probability, statistics, and linear algebra. In order to make this book self-contained, a chapter on cell biology and a chapter on control theory have been included. In der Therapie orthostatischer Dysregulationen werden physikalische MaBnahmen beschrieben und Wege gezeigt, mit sportlicher Aktivitat das Kreislaufverhalten zu beeinflussen. Einen brei ten Raum ninnnt die medikamentose Therapie ein. Anhand zahlreicher Experimente wird das therapeutische Vorgehen erklart und die pathoge netische Anwendung erlautert. The temporary appearance of circumscribed areas of relatively thick ectoderm has been observed in embryos of a variety of vertebrates. These areas, discovered by Van Wijhe (1882) in fish embryos, were called placodes by Von Kupffer (1894). These placodes have been studied extensively in embryos of lower vertebrates, probably be cause they can be clearly distinguished in these animals and are readily accessible for experiments. Areas of thick ectoderm in human embryos, first described by Bartelmez and Evans (1926), cover nearly the entire lateral side of the primordium of the head, but do not seem to be identical with the above-mentioned placodes. In human embryos, and in mammalian embryos in general, the placodes are probably part of these larger regions of thick ectoderm. Only incomplete and contradictory data are to be found in the literature on both the origin and development of the areas of thin and thick ectoderm. The relationship between placodes and the larger regions of thick ectoderm has scar cely been studied. In the research described here, some aspects of the problem of the initial develop ment of the ectoderm of the head were studied more closely. In addition, attention was also paid to the general morphology of the young mouse embryo to supplement a previous study (Snell, 1941). 88 pp. Deutsch.
