Our dream has been, and still is: (1) nd ways to understand the physiol- ical, symbolic and cognitive nature of the nervous system (NS) with the help of computational and engineering tools; and (2) nd rich and insightful sources of inspiration in biology, to develop new materials, mechanisms and probl- solving methods (PSM) of value in engineering and computation. As all of us knowwell, this dreamstarted with the AncientGreeks, reappearedin the fo- dational stage of neurocybernetics and bionics, and is now broadly accepted in the scienti c community under di erent labels such as computational neu- science(CN) andarti cialneuralnets (ANN), orgenetic algorithmsandhybrid neuro-fuzzy systems. We have also to recognize that there is a considerable lack of credibility associated with CN and ANN among some researchers, both from biology and from the engineering and computation area. Potential causes of this scepticism could be the lack of methodology, formal tools, and real-world applications, in the engineering area, and the lack also of formal tools for cognitive process modeling. There is also the possibility of the computational paradigm being inappropriate to explain cognition, because of the ¿representational¿ character ofanycomputationalmodel. Some¿moresituated¿approachesarelookingback to the ¿neurophysiological epistemology¿ of the 1960¿s (mind in a body) to searchdirectlyforthemechanismsthatcouldembodythecognitiveprocess, and this means some fresh air for our old dream of connectionism. 800 pp. Englisch.

Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientists who gave extraorinarily good presentations. Certainely one reason for this success is that most of us feel obliged to help the scienti c life in South East Europe return to its former level. However, there are very exciting new scienti c developments as well. Part of the meeting was dominated by neutrino physics which has just seen exciting progress by establishing neutrino masses experimentally. This was d- cussed within neutrino masses and grand uni ed theories (GUTs). General - pects of neutrino physics and CP violation, neutrino mixing and the bayron asymmetry were presented along the same lines. On the theoretical side the idea of the construction of gauge theories on non-commutative spaces and their phenomenological implications is accepted worldwide within the particle physics community.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 384 pp. Englisch.

Derived to describe long surface waves in a narrow and shallow channel, this equation in fact models waves in homogeneous, weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive media in general.Viewing the KdV equation as an infinite dimensional, and in fact integrable Hamiltonian system, we first construct action-angle coordinates which turn out to be globally defined. They make evident that all solutions of the periodic KdV equation are periodic, quasi-periodic or almost-periodic in time. Also, their construction leads to some new results along the way.Subsequently, these coordinates allow us to apply a general KAM theorem for a class of integrable Hamiltonian pde's, proving that large families of periodic and quasi-periodic solutions persist under sufficiently small Hamiltonian perturbations. The pertinent nondegeneracy conditions are verified by calculating the first few Birkhoff normal form terms -- an essentially elementary calculation.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 300 pp. Englisch.

Our fre quency distributions and the looseness of relationships reflect the com plexity and intrinsic natural variation in nature, more than measurement error. Furthermore, earth scientists cannot design experiments according to statistical recommendation because the availability and complexity of data are beyond our control. Usually, the system we are studying cannot be isolated into discrete independent variables. These factors influence the first steps of research, how and where to collect specimens or observations. Some issues are particularly troublesome and common in earth science, but are rarely handled in an undergraduate statistics course. These include spatial-sampling methods, orientation data, regionalised variables, time se ries, identification of cyclicity and pattern, discrimination, multivariate systems, lurking variables and constant-sum data. It is remarkable that most earth-science students confront these issues without formal training or focused consideration.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 384 pp. Englisch.

Some of us who started this knowledge exploration journeys some decades ago could perhaps realize how quickly this theme should become so important. Today it is on almost every executive's agenda. The timing, the context and the comprehensive content of this second edition could not have been better. In this second edition the authors have extended their overview with case studies and facts that confirm what we intuitively knew. Knowledge and intangibles are a top strategic issue. It is vital for an organization if it wants to be competitive, sus tainable and profitable. The solid overview and the holistic review and testing of the theories with real cases, gives the reader a lot of facts and models of how man agement could invest in this area with very good return, in one case with a return of investment of 200 % in one year! It is a very extensive work on the growing field of knowledge management. In its extension guidelines and emerging standards are already visible, as e. g. the guide lines from the Danish government on IC reporting or of the Norwegian Associa tion of Financial Analysts.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 420 pp. Englisch.

At present no methodology is available to design controllers in a systematic manner for such systems. This book introduces a new design theory for controllers for such constrained and switching dynamical systems and leads to algorithms that systematically solve control synthesis problems. The first part is a self-contained introduction to multiparametric programming, which is the main technique used to study and compute state feedback optimal control laws. The book's main objective is to derive properties of the state feedback solution, as well as to obtain algorithms to compute it efficiently. The focus is on constrained linear systems and constrained linear hybrid systems. The applicability of the theory is demonstrated through two experimental case studies: a mechanical laboratory process and a traction control system developed jointly with the Ford Motor Company in Michigan.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The classical view on polymer crystallization basically focused on the expla- tion of a few macroscopically observable parameters like the thickness of the resulting lamellar structure and the corresponding growth rates. However, the emerging paradigm for the description of chain crystals is too simple and cannot account for the complex non-equilibrium processes responsible for structure f- mation on various levels, ranging from the nanometer up to the millimeter scale. This complexity detected by several novel experimental results led to a renewed interest in this ¿old¿ topic of polymer crystallization. These new ndings c- cern the early stages of the crystallization process, crystal formation in con ned geometries like ultra-thin lms and the competition between (micro)phase s- aration and crystallization in copolymers and blends. In particular, high spatial resolution techniques such as atomic force microscopy provided deeper insight into the molecular organization of crystallizable polymers. Computer simu- tions based on microscopic processes were used to improve our understanding of how polymer crystals are nucleated and how they grow. New ideas emerged about possible multistage pathways which are followed during the formation of polymer lamellae. The importance and the consequences of the non-equilibrium character of polymer crystals got signi cantly more attention. Links and ana- gies to growth phenomena and pattern formation in general are being developed. However, these ideas are still subject of intensive and controversial discussions.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 408 pp. Englisch.

Many of the presentations focused on new emerging research areas of key significance. These new areas have in common that the dynamics and control theory and methods provide the appropriate framework for the understanding of the corresponding phenomena, while at the same time providing many of the tools necessary for their application to relevant technologies. Examples of these opportunities include the areas of systems biology, quantum feedback and control, fluid dynamics, and control applications in nanotechnology. This collected volume demonstrates the importance of these emerging areas in the current research agenda in science and technology and shows that a unique opportunity exists to drastically extend the scope and impact of dynamics and control methods far beyond their traditional areas of application in engineering. 244 pp. Englisch.

The methods and concepts, taken primarily from high energy accelerators, have for the most part already been presented in internal reports and proceedings of accelera tor conferences, a portion of which has appeared in refereed journals. In this book we have tried to coherently organize this material so as to be useful to designers and operators in the commissioning and operation of particle accelerators. A point of emphasis has been to provide, wherever possible, experimental data to illustrate the particular concept under discussion. The book is devoted to various aspects of the statistical analysis of data arising in the process of measurement. We would like to stress that the book is devoted to general problems arising in processing measurement data and does not deal with various aspects of special measurement techniques. For example, we do not go into the details of how special physical parameters, say ohmic resistance or temperature, should be measured. We also omit the accuracy analysis of particular measurement devices. The Introduction (Chapter 1) gives a general and brief description of the measurement process, defines the measurand and describes different kinds of the measurement error. Chapter 2 is devoted to the point and interval estimation of the popula tion mean and standard deviation (variance). It also discusses the normal and uniform distributions, the two most widely used distributions in measurement. We give an overview of the basic rules for operating with means and variances of sums of random variables. This information is particularly important for combining measurement results obtained from different sources. There is a brief description of graphical tools for analyzing sampIe data. This chapter also presents the round-off rules for data presentation.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 168 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This book contains most of the papers presented at the 4th International C- ference on Extreme Programming and Agile Processes in Software Engineering (XP 2003), held in Genoa, Italy, May 2003. The XP 200n series of conferences were started in 2000 to promote the - change of new ideas, research and applications in the emerging eld of agile methodologies for software development. Over the years, the conference has - come the main world forum for all major advances in this important eld. Also this year the contributions to Agile Methodologies and Extreme P- gramming were substantial. They demonstrate that the topic is continuing to gain more and more momentum. In spite of some criticism of agile meth- ologies, everyone agrees that they address some unresolved needs of software practitioners. People still do not know how to develop software on time, with the desired features, and within the given budget! This volume is divided into several thematic sections, easing reader¿s na- gation through the content. Full papers are presented rst, followed by research reports, papers from the Educational Symposium, and papers from the Ph.D. Symposium. The presentations given during three panel sessions held at the conference conclude the book. The section on Managing Agile Processes includes contributions highlighting the sometimes di cult relationship between agile methodologies and mana- ment, and includes approaches and suggestions that should facilitate the acc- tance of agile methodologies at the di erent levels of management. 484 pp. Englisch.

The working group is being funded as a concerted action/ thematic network by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) unit of the IST program. The aim of iTrust is to provide a forum for cross-disciplinary investigation of the application of trust as a means of establishing security and con dence in the global computing infrastructure, recognizing trust as a crucial enabler for meaningful and mutually bene cial interactions. The proposed forum is intended to bring together researchers with a keen interest in complementary aspects of trust, from technology-oriented disciplines and the elds of law, social sciences, and philosophy. Hence providing the c- sortium participants (and the research communities associated with them) with the common background necessary for advancing toward an in-depth underst- ding of the fundamental issues and challenges in the area of trust management in open systems. Broadly the initiative aims to: ¿ facilitate the cross-disciplinary investigation of fundamental issues underp- ning computational trust models by bringing together expertise from te- nology oriented sciences, law, philosophy, and social sciences ¿ facilitate the emergence of widely acceptable trust management processes for dynamic open systems and applications ¿ facilitate the development of new paradigms in the area of dynamic open systems which e ectively utilize computational trust models ¿ help the incorporation of trust management elements in existing standards. 364 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The rst international conference on Functional Imaging and Modeling of the 1 Heart (FIMH) was held in Helsinki, Finland, in November 2001, thanks to the strongscienti ccollaborationbetweenFranceandFinland. Thiseventwasa rst attempt to federate the heart imaging community and to encourage collabo- tion between scientists in signal and image processing, applied mathematics and physics, biomedical engineering and computer science, and experts in card- logy, radiology, biology, and physiology, in Europe and beyond. The conference has encountered considerable success. The outstanding research works pres- ted have demonstrated a very active research eld with complex modeling and image analysis problems to be solved. One of the outcomes was the special issue of the Medical Image Analysis journal based on a selection of the conference¿s best papers, to appear in the second half of 2003. The FIMH 2001 meeting was the starting point of a discussion for federating the European research e ort in cardiac imaging, heart modeling, and cardiac image analysis. It was very successful, and a large coalition was created around 2 the e-Heart proposal for a Network of Excellence in the European Sixth Fra- work Program. The e-Heart network has already gathered about 200 researchers from 100 institutes. A project proposal has been submitted to the European Union. It was decided in the rst meeting to organize a regular biennial conference.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 324 pp. Englisch.

Starting with a clear technical definition of this term and its relation to topics like A2A (Application-to-Application), ASP (Application Service Provider), A2A, and B2C (Business-to-Consumer), Christoph Bussler outlines a complete and consistent B2B integration architecture based on a coherent conceptual model. He shows that B2B integration not only requires the exchange of business events between distributed trading partners across networks like the Internet, but also demands back-end application integration within business processes, and thus goes far beyond traditional approaches to enterprise application integration approaches. His detailed presentation describes how B2B integration standards like RosettaNet or SWIFT, the application integration standard J2EE Connector Architecture and basic standards like XML act together in order to enable business process integration. The book is the first of its kind that discusses B2B concepts and architectures independent of specific and short-term industrial or academic approaches and thus provides solid and long-lasting knowledge for researchers, students, and professionals interested in the field of B2B integration.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 444 pp. Englisch.
