In the ¿Year of Informatics 2006¿ the HNF was particularly keen to examine the history of this still quite young discipline. The short-lived nature of information technologies means that individuals, inventions, devices, institutes and companies¿age¿ more rapidly than in many other specialties. And in the nature of things the group of computer pioneers from the early days is growing smaller all the time. To supplement a planned new exhibit on ¿Software and Inform- ics¿ at the HNF, the idea arose of recording the history of informatics in an accompanying publication. Mysearchforsuitablesourcesandauthorsveryquickly cameupwith the right answer, the very rst name in Germany: Friedrich L. Bauer, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the TU in Munich, one of the - thers of informatics in Germany and for decades the indefatigable author of the¿Historical Notes¿ column of the journal Informatik Spektrum. Friedrich L. Bauer was already the author of two works on the history of informatics, published in different decades and in different books. Both of them are notable for their knowledgeable, extremely comp- hensive and yet compact style. My obvious course was to motivate this author to amalgamate, supplement and illustrate his previous work.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 152 pp. Englisch.

A variety of EM methods, approaches, and tools are being developed and offered on the market. In practice they are used for various purposes such as business strategy development, process restructuring, as well as business and IT architecture alignment and governance. PoEM 2009 ¿ the second IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference on The Practice of Enterprise Modeling took place in November in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference series is a dedicated forum where the use of EM in practice is addressed by bringing together researchers, users, and practitioners in order to develop a better understanding of the practice of EM, to contribute to improved EM practice as well as to share knowledge and experiences. PoEM 2009 attracted 41 submissions from many different parts of the world, out of which the Program Committee selected 17 high-quality papers. Among the authors of these papers we find both researchers and practitioners. The resulting program reflects the fact that the topic of EM encompasses human, organizational issues, as well as more technical aspects related to the development of information systems. The program was organized in six thematic sessions: Experiences in EM The process of modeling EM in information systems development Model quality and reuse EM for Services modeling New ventures in EM The program also featured two keynotes by experienced EM practitioners. SAL places the latest developments in Systems Science into an actionable method for use by everyday leaders. It enables leaders to develop themselves and their organisation (or part of it) quickly and effectively to achieve a competitive advantage in a complex and uncertain world. SAL consists of an integrated framework with an overall strategy of whole system development. Central to the framework is a practical method which can be used by any leader at any organisational level. Supporting the framework are a range of systems approaches and a set of foundational assumptions. SAL has been carefully researched and refined in extensive field tests where it typically delivers outcomes well above expectations.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This edition marks the tenth Middleware conference. The rst conference was held in the Lake District of England in 1998, and its genesis re ected a growing realization that middleware systems were a unique breed of distributed system requiring their own rigorous research and evaluation. Distributed systems had been around for decades, and the Middleware conference itself resulted from the combination of three previous conferences. But the attempt to build common platforms for many di erent applications requireda unique combinationofhi- level abstraction and low-level optimization, and presented challenges di erent from building a monolithic distributed system. Since that rst conference, the notion of what constitutes ¿middleware¿ has changed somewhat, and the focus of research papers has changed with it. The rst edition focused heavily on distributed objects as a metaphor for building systems, including six papers with ¿CORBA¿ or ¿ORB¿ in the title. In f- lowing years, the conference broadened to cover publish/subscribe messaging, peer-to-peer systems, distributed databases, Web services, and automated m- agement, among other topics. Innovative techniques and architectures surfaced in workshops, and expanded to become themes of the main conference, while changes in the industry and advances in other research areas helped to shape research agendas. This tenth edition includes papers on next-generation pl- forms (such as stream systems, pervasive systems and cloud systems), managing enterprise data centers, and platforms for building other platforms, among o- ers.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 456 pp. Englisch.

In the tradition of its predecessors, ESAW 2009 was committed to the idea of multi-agent systems (MAS) as highly interconnected societies of agents, paying particular attention to the social aspects, methodologies and software infrastructures that tackle the emergent complexities of MAS. The idea for the ESAW workshop series was born 10 years ago, in 1999, among the members of the working group on ¿Communication, Coordination and Collaboration¿ of AgentLink, the 1st European Network of Excellence on Agent-Based Computing, out of a critical discussion about the general mi- set of the agents community. Central to this discussion is the need for proper consideration of systematic aspects of MAS, acknowledging the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach, that takes into account the social, environmental and technological perspectives. SAMT brings together researchers dealing with a broad range of research topics related to semantic multimedia and a great diversity of application - eas. The current research shows that adding and using semantics of multimedia content is broadening its scope from search and retrieval to the complete media life cycle, from content creation to distribution and consumption, thus lever- ing new possibilities in creating, sharing and reusing multimedia content. While some of the contributions present improvements in automatic analysis and - notation methods, there is increasingly more work dealing with visualization, user interaction and collaboration. We can also observe ongoing standardization activities related to semantic multimedia in both W3C and MPEG, forming a solid basis for a wide adoption. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is reasonable that dependability and security are addressed at the architectural level. This book has originated from an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures, dependability and security. This state-of-the-art survey contains expanded and peer-reviewed papers based on the carefully selected contributions to two workshops: the Workshop on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2008), organized at the 2008 International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2008), held in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, in June 2008, and the Third International Workshop on Views On Designing Complex Architectures (VODCA 2008) held in Bertinoro, Italy, in August 2008. Key issues covered by his work are the automatic composition of processes out of predefined components and the verification of specific process properties. His research aims at quickly creating executable process models, which orchestrate the usage of Web services. He investigates how process modelers can be supported by semantic technologies, e.g., by semantically enriched process models or annotated Web services, and puts special emphasis on expressiveness and scalability.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 308 pp. Englisch.

NET-COOP 2009 was organized in conjunction with the Euro-NF workshop on ¿New Trends in Modeling, Quan- tative Methods, and Measurements. ¿ While organized within the framework of Euro-NF, NET-COOP enjoys great interest beyond Euro-NF, as is attested by the geographic origins of the papers in these proceedings. In each of these domains network operators and service providers face the challenging task to e ciently provide service at their customer¿s standards in a highly dynamic - vironment. Internet tra c continues to grow tremendously in terms of volume as well as diversity. This development is fueled by the increasing availability of high-bandwidth access (both wired and wireless) to end users, opening new ground for evolving and newly emerging wide-band applications. The increase in network complexity, as well as the plurality of parties involved in network operation, calls for e cient distributed control. New models and techniques for the control and optimization of networks are needed to address the challenge of allocating communication resources e ciently and fairly, while accounting for non-cooperative behavior.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 292 pp. Englisch.

Now, the world is in the midst of an extraordinary information explosion led by rapid growth in the use of the Internet and connected devices. Both user-generated data and enterprise data levels continue to grow ex- nentially. With substantial technological breakthroughs, Moore's law will continue for at least a decade, and the data storage capacities and data transfer speeds will continue to increase exponentially. These have challenged industry experts and researchers to develop innovative techniques to evaluate and benchmark both hardware and software technologies. As a result, the TPC held its First Conference on Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking (TPCTC 2009) on August 24 in Lyon, France in conjunction with the 35th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2009). TPCTC 2009 provided industry experts and researchers with a forum to present and debate novel ideas and methodologies in performance evaluation, measurement and characteri- tion for 2010 and beyond. Many of them are funded by the European Union, such as the 3D Anatomical Human project and those present in the seventh framework programme ¿Virtual Physiological Human¿(FP7-ICT-2007-2). One of the main objectivesof the researchon 3D physiologicalhuman is to create patient-speci c computer models for personalized healthcare. These models are used to simulate and hence better understand the human physiology and pathology. There is also a synergy in this research in the way medical information is distributed: to have any model available anytime, anywhere on any mobile equipment. A collection of scienti c articles was proposed to highlight the necessity to exchange and disseminate novel ideas and techniques from a wide range of d- ciplines (computer graphics, biomechanics, knowledge representation, human¿ machine interface, mobile computing, etc.) associated with medical imaging, medical simulation, computer-assisted surgery and 3D semantics. The emphasis wason technicalnoveltyalongwith currentandfuture applications for modeling and simulating the anatomical structures and functions of the human body.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -At the School of Information Technology, KMUTT, we believe that information te- nology is the most important driver of economy and social development. IT can - able better productivity, as well as helping us to save resources. IT is giving rise to a new round of industrial and business revolution. We now can have products and s- vices that once were believed to be beyond reach. Without IT, it is impossible for people to realize their full potential. Businesses worldwide are harnessing the power of broadband communication, which will have a profound and constructive impact on the economic, social devel- ment, education, and almost all aspects of our life. This new era of unified commu- cation presents us with new challenges. This is why we should work together more closely to enhance the exchange of knowledge related to effective application of broadband communication and IT. It is my sincere hope that all contributions to the Third International Conference on Advances in Information Technology (IAIT 2009) will increase our understanding of how we can have effectively apply this emerging technology for the benefit of all people all around the world. I hope IAIT 2009 will also lead to more research that can contr- ute to a better methodology for IT applications in the era of unified communication. I am very grateful to all our keynotes speakers for coming all the way to Thailand.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 220 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Studying the complex physical systems of stellar jets necessitates the incorporation of nonlinear effects which occur on a wide variety of length and timescales. One of the primary methods used to study the physics of jets is numerical simulations that apply high performance computing techniques. Such techniques are also required for analysing the huge modern astrophysical datasets. This book examines those computing techniques. It is a collection of the lectures from the fifth and final school of the JETSET network, 'Jets From Young Stars V: High Performance Computing in Astrophysics.' It begins with an introduction to parallel programming techniques, with an emphasis on Message Passing Interface (MPI), before it goes on to review grid technology techniques and offer a practical introduction to Virtual Observatory. The second half of the book, then, is devoted to applications of high performance computing techniques, including 3D radiation transfer, to jet and star formation processes.Aimed at graduate students in astrophysics, this book presents state-of-the-art methods, thereby offering interesting new insights to researchers in the field.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.

Presentation of recent results obtained in different disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of FGIT as a whole. Of particular interest are hybrid solutions that c- bine ideas taken from multiple disciplines in order to achieve something more signi- cant than the sum of the individual parts. Through such hybrid philosophy, a new principle can be discovered, which has the propensity to propagate throughout mul- faceted disciplines. FGIT 2009 was the first mega-conference that attempted to follow the above idea of hybridization in FGIT in a form of multiple events related to particular disciplines of IT, conducted by separate scientific committees, but coordinated in order to expose the most important contributions. It included the following international conferences: Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications (ASEA), Bio-Science and Bio-Technology (BSBT), Control and Automation (CA), Database Theory and Application (DTA), D- aster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC; published independently), Future G- eration Communication and Networking (FGCN) that was combined with Advanced Communication and Networking (ACN), Grid and Distributed Computing (GDC), M- timedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB), Security Technology (SecTech), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP), and- and e-Service, Science and Technology (UNESST).Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 336 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -As a young ophthalmologist, I found corneal epithelial diseases a subject diffcult to grasp. One day, it occurred to me that the reason might be a lack of images showing the nature of the components of the changes visible with the slit lamp. With the slit lamp, the inevitable eye movements that blur the image limited the magnifcation level, but perhaps photography might be the answer. It was not a short journey, but in the end the idea proved right. By trial and error, the quality of the images improved, and after some time, I found that the resolution allowed reasonable comparisons with available images of histological preparations. Such comparisons allowed better und- standing of the substructures of epithelial in vivo lesions and, in conjunction with their in vivo dynamic features, eventually an understanding of at least some mechanisms behind them. This book, originating from over 20 years of experience with observations of ocular surface changes at high magnifcation level, covers several aspects of corneal epithelial lesions caused in humans by herpes simplex virus: various shapes of the lesions, their substructure and mechanisms behind them; morphological features of the healing p- cess, sequelae, complications, and some accompanying signs; and some rare cases. For those less familiar with the slit lamp image, I have added explanatory drawings to facilitate comprehension.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 72 pp. Englisch.
