Entitled Kombinatorische Anzahlbest immungen jUr Gruppen, Graphen und c…hemische Verbindungen, it was published in Acta Mathematica, Vol. 68, pp. 145 to 254. Its author, George Polya, was already a mathematician of considerable stature, well-known for outstanding work in many branches of mathematics, particularly analysis. The paper in Question was unusual in that it depended almost entirely on a single theorem -- the 'Hauptsatz' of Section 4 -- a theorem which gave a method for solving a general type of enumera tion problem. On the face of it, this is not something that one would expect to run to over 100 pages. Yet the range of the applica tions of the theorem and of its ramifications was enormous, as Polya clearly showed. In the various sections of his paper he explored many applications to the enumeration of graphs, principally trees, and of chemical isomers, using his theorem to present a comprehen sive and unified treatment of problems which had previously been solved, if at all, only by ad hoc methods. In the final section he investigated the asymptotic properties of these enumerational results, bringing to bear his formidable insight as an analyst. 160 pp. Englisch.

(1975), Gokhale and Kullback (1978), Upton (1978), Fienberg (1980), Plackett (1981), Agresti (1984), Goodman (1984), and Freeman (1987). The objective of our book differs from those listed above. Rather than concentrating on model building, our intention is to describe and assess the goodness-of-fit statistics used in the model verification part of the inference process. Those books that emphasize model development tend to assume that the model can be tested with one of the traditional goodness-of-fit tests 2 2 (e.g., Pearson's X or the loglikelihood ratio G ) using a chi-squared critical value. However, it is well known that this can give a poor approximation in many circumstances. This book provides the reader with a unified analysis of the traditional goodness-of-fit tests, describing their behavior and relative merits as well as introducing some new test statistics. The power-divergence family of statistics (Cressie and Read, 1984) is used to link the traditional test statistics through a single real-valued parameter, and provides a way to consolidate and extend the current fragmented literature. ' The motivation for these volumes is to foster interaction between Industry and Mathematics at the 'grass roots level;' that is, at the level of specific p…roblems. At the same time, these prob lems have the potential for mathematical challenge and novelty. To identify such problems, I have visited industries and had discussions with their scientists. Some of the scientists have subsequently presented their problems in the IMA Seminar on Industrial Problems. The book is based on the seminar presentations and on questions raised in subse quent discussions. Each chapter is devoted to one of the talks and is self contained. The chapters usually provide references to the mathematical literature and a list of open problems which are of interest to the industrial scientists. For some problems a partial solution is indicated briefly. The last chapter of the book contains a short description of solutions to some of the problems raised in previous volumes, as well as references to papers in which such solutions have been published. Since then steadily increasing demands for the accuracy, reliability and complexity required in electronic equipment have served as a stimulus in the development of the theory of reliability. From 1950 to 1955 Epstein and Sobel [67,68] and Davis [62], in an analysis of statistical data of the operating time of an instrument up to failure, showed that the distribution is exponential in many cases. Consequently, the ex ponential distribution became basic to research associated with experiments on life expectancy. Further research has shown that there are a whole series of problems in reliability theory for which the exponential distribution is inapplicable. However, it can practically always be used as a first approximation. The ease of computational work due to the nice properties of the exponential distribution (for example, the lack of memory property, see Section 1) is also a reason for its frequent use. Stigler's The History of Statistics (19S6) gives an overview up to 1900 while Anders Ha…ld's two encyclopedic volumes A History of Probability and Statistics before 1750 and A History of Mathematical Statistics f'T'Om 1750 to 1930, published in 1990 and 1995, provide detailed mathematical discussion of the major contributions up to 1930. Hald's books have re moved Isaac Todhunter's A History of Probability from the pedestal which it occupied for a century and a quarter and rendered Karl Pearson's Lec ture Notes of mainly historical interest themselves. Journal papers have appeared on specific topics, especially in the series 'Studies in the History of Probability and Statistics' in Biometrika and in the long sequence of papers in Archive for the History of the Exact Sciences by O. Sheynin. The two volumes of reprinted papers, mostly from Biometrika, issued in 1970 and 1977 have proved particularly valuable. More recently, many important papers published since 1900 have been reprinted with commentaries in the three-volume Breakth'T'Oughs in Statistics (1992-1997). Stigler's Statistics on the Table (1999) provides illuminating vignettes. In addition, specialized books have appeared on particular topics, such as A. I. Dale's A History of Inverse P'T'Obability (1991, 1999) and R. W. Fare brother's Fitting Linear Relationships (199S). The pioneering book on the early period, F. We have tried to keep two types of reader in… mind: (1) mathematicians, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in mathematics who want a concise introduction to a field which contains nontrivial interesting applications of mathematics (for example, weak convergence, convexity, and the theory of ordinary differential equations); (2) economists, applied scientists, and engineers who want to understand some of the mathematical foundations. of optimal control theory. In general, we have emphasized motivation and explanation, avoiding the 'definition-axiom-theorem-proof' approach. We make use of a large number of examples, especially one simple canonical example which we carry through the entire book. In proving theorems, we often just prove the simplest case, then state the more general results which can be proved. Many of the more difficult topics are discussed in the 'Notes' sections at the end of chapters and several major proofs are in the Appendices. We feel that a solid understanding of basic facts is best attained by at first avoiding excessive generality. We have not tried to give an exhaustive list of references, preferring to refer the reader to existing books or papers with extensive bibliographies. Neuware -Like some of my colleagues, in my earlier years I found the multivariate Jacobian calculations horrible and unbelievable. As I listened and read during the years 1956 to 1974 I continually saw alternatives to the Jacobian and variable…change method of computing probability density functions. Further, it was made clear by the work of A. T. James that computation of the density functions of the sets of roots of determinental equations required a method other than Jacobian calculations and that the densities could be calculated using differential forms on manifolds. It had become clear from the work ofC S. Herz and A. T. James that the expression of the noncentral multivariate density functions required integration with respect to Haar measures on locally compact groups. Material on manifolds and locally compact groups had not yet reached the pages of multivariate books of the time and also much material about multivariate computations existed only in the journal literature or in unpublished sets oflecture notes. In spirit, being more a mathematician than a statistician, the urge to write a book giving an integrated treatment of these topics found expression in 1974-1975 when I took a one year medical leave of absence from Cornell University. During this period I wrote Techniques of Multivariate Calculation. I wrote the first two books for beginning graduate students with some knowledge of probability; if you can follow Sections 10.4 to 10.9 of Markov Chains, you're in. The first two books are quite independent of one another, and completely independent of this one, which is a monograph explaining one way to think about chains with instantaneous states. The results here are supposed to be new, except when there are specific disclaimers. It's written in the framework of Markov chains; we wanted to reprint in this volume the MC chapters needed for reference. but this proved impossible. Most of the proofs in the trilogy are new, and I tried hard to make them explicit. The old ones were often elegant, but I seldom saw what made them go. With my own, I can sometimes show you why things work. And, as I will argue in a minute, my demonstrations are easier technically. Neuware -During the last two decades, structural equation modeling (SEM) has emerged as a powerful multivariate data analysis tool in social science research settings, especially in the fields of sociology, psychology, and education. Although i…ts roots can be traced back to the first half of this century, when Spearman (1904) developed factor analysis and Wright (1934) introduced path analysis, it was not until the 1970s that the works by Karl Joreskog and his associates (e. g. , Joreskog, 1977; Joreskog and Van Thillo, 1973) began to make general SEM techniques accessible to the social and behavioral science research communities. Today, with the development and increasing avail ability of SEM computer programs, SEM has become a well-established and respected data analysis method, incorporating many of the traditional analysis techniques as special cases. State-of-the-art SEM software packages such as LISREL (Joreskog and Sorbom, 1993a,b) and EQS (Bentler, 1993; Bentler and Wu, 1993) handle a variety of ordinary least squares regression designs as well as complex structural equation models involving variables with arbitrary distributions. Unfortunately, many students and researchers hesitate to use SEM methods, perhaps due to the somewhat complex underlying statistical repre sentation and theory.
