In order to gain insight into managing these difficulties, much research effort has been directed at mesh generation, parallel computation, and improvements in accuracy, aimed primarily at refinement interfaces. A major stumbling block in this endeavor is that many of these techniques entail substantial amounts of problem specific detail. Standardization is highly unlikely, except within narrowly defined problem domains. The papers presented in this collection are based on talks given at the Workshop on Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement Grid Methods, held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota, on March 12-13 1997. They describe research to improve the general understanding of the application of SAMR to practical problems; identify issues critical to efficient and effective implementation on high performance computers; stimulate the development of a community code repository for software including benchmarks to assist in the evaluation of software and compiler technologies. The ten chapters of this volume have been divided into two parts reflecting two major issues in the topic: (I) programming complexity of SAMR algorithms and (II) applicability and numerical challenges of SAMR methods. The purpose of this book is to present some recent developments on the theory of adaptive CMP's, i. e. , CMP's that depend on unknown parameters. Thus at each decision time, the controller or decision-maker must estimate the true parameter values, and then adapt the control actions to the estimated values. We do not intend to describe all aspects of stochastic adaptive control; rather, the selection of material reflects our own research interests. The prerequisite for this book is a knowledgeof real analysis and prob ability theory at the level of, say, Ash (1972) or Royden (1968), but no previous knowledge of control or decision processes is required. The pre sentation, on the other hand, is meant to beself-contained,in the sensethat whenever a result from analysisor probability is used, it is usually stated in full and references are supplied for further discussion, if necessary. In the almost 20 years since then, the subject has grown so much in breadth and in depth that an account of the present state of kno…wledge of all the topics discussed there could not be fitted into one volume without resorting to an excessively terse style of writing. Instead of undertaking such a task, I have concentrated, in this exposi tion, on the aspects of the asymptotic theory with which I have been particularly concerned during those 20 years, which is the nature and structure of turning points. As in Chapter VIII of my previous book, only linear analytic differential equations are considered, but the inclusion of important new ideas and results, as well as the development of the neces sary background material have made this an exposition of book length. The formal theory of linear analytic differential equations without a parameter near singularities with respect to the independent variable has, in recent years, been greatly deepened by bringing to it methods of modern algebra and topology. It is very probable that many of these ideas could also be applied to the problems concerning singularities with respect to a parameter, and I hope that this will be done in the near future. Partial Differential Equations, by Fritz John, the first volume of the series, appeared in 1971. One year prior to its appearance, the then mathematics… editor of Springer-Verlag, Klaus Peters, organized a meeting to look into the possibility of starting a series slanted toward applications. The meeting took place in New Rochelle, at the home of Fritz and Char lotte John. K.O. Friedrichs, Peter Lax, Monroe Donsker, Joe Keller, and others from the Courant Institute (previously, the Institute for Mathemat ical Sciences) were present as were Joe LaSalle and myself, the two of us having traveled down from Providence for the meeting. The John home, a large, comfortable house, especially lent itself to the informal, relaxed, and wide-ranging discussion that ensued. What emerged was a consensus that mathematical applications appeared to be poised for a period of growth and that there was a clear need for a series committed to applied mathematics. The topics at this third conference included the foundations of quantum communi cation and information theory, quantum measurement theory, quantum cryptography and quantum computation, quantum devices and high-precision measurements, gener ation of nonclassical light, and atom optics. Special emphasis was placed on bringing together research workers in experimental and engineering fields of quantum commu nication and quantum computing and theoreticians working in quantum measurement and information theory. In the text examples, and in the problems, we have sought to include interesting data sets from a wide variety of fields including political science, medicine, nuclear engineering, sociology, ecology, cancer research, library science, and biology. Although there are several texts available on discrete data analysis, we felt there was a need for a book which incorporated some of the myriad recent research advances. Our motivation was to introduce the subject by emphasizing its ties to the well-known theories of linear models, experi mental design, and regression diagnostics, as well as to describe alterna tive methodologies (Bayesian, smoothing, etc. ); the latter are based on the premise that external information is available.
