Usually, they are written using complicated mathematical language, so that except in rare cases, their content becomes incomprehensible to engineers, researchers, students, and sometimes even to professors at technical universities. The present book deals only with those issues of stability of motion that most often are encountered in the solution of scientific and technical problems. This allows the author to explain the theory in a simple but rigorous manner without going into minute details that would be of interest only to specialists. Also, using appropriate examples, he demonstrates the process of investigating the stability of motion from the formulation of a problem and obtaining the differential equations of perturbed motion to complete analysis and recommendations. About one fourth of the examples are from various areas of science and technology. Moreover, some of the examples and the problems have an independent value in that they could be applicable to the design of various mechanisms and devices. We have chosen the word 'Learning' rather than 'Teaching' because we think that what the student does in order to learn is much more important than wha…t the professor does in order to teach. Academia is filled with outstanding mathematics teachers: excellent expositors, good organizers, hard workers, men and women who have a deep understanding of Mathematics and its applications. Yet, when it comes to ideas in Mathe matics, our students do not seem to be learning. It may be that something more is needed and we have tried to construct a book that might provide a different kind of help to the student in acquiring some of the fundamental concepts of Mathematics. In a number of ways we have made choices that seem to us to be the best for learning, even if they don't always completely agree with standard teaching practice. A second issue concerns students' writing programs. ISETL is a pro gramming language and by the phrase 'with ISETL' in the title, we mean that our intention is for students to write code, think about what they have written, predict its results, and run their programs to check their predic tions. There is a trade-off here. I have tried to follow two principles. The first is to pr…ove things 'probabilistically' whenever possible without recourse to other branches of mathematics and in a notation that is as 'probabilistic' as possible. Thus, for example, the asymptotics of pn for large n, where P is a stochastic matrix, is developed in Section V by using passage probabilities and hitting times rather than, say, pulling in Perron Frobenius theory or spectral analysis. Similarly in Section II the joint normal distribution is studied through conditional expectation rather than quadratic forms. The second principle I have tried to follow is to only prove results in their simple forms and to try to eliminate any minor technical com putations from proofs, so as to expose the most important steps. Steps in proofs or derivations that involve algebra or basic calculus are not shown; only steps involving, say, the use of independence or a dominated convergence argument or an assumptjon in a theorem are displayed. From his work there has followed a spate of developments in which he played the leading role-the theory of fiber-rein forced materials, the developments of the theory of constitutive equations, the theory of materials with memory, the theory of the fracture of elastomers, the theory of viscoelastic fluids and solids, the development of nonlinear crystal physics, the theory of small deformations superimposed on large, and the effect of large initial strain on wave propagation. It is in Rivlin's work that universal relations were first recognized. Here also are to be found lucid explanations of physical phenomena such as the Poynting effect for elastic rods in torsion. Addi tionally, he and his co-workers predicted the presence of secondary flows for viscoelastic fluids in straight pipes of noncircular cross section under a uniform pressure head. While some others may have displayed a cavalier lack of concern for physical reality and an intoxication with mathematical idiom, Rivlin has al ways been concerned with genuine mathematical and physical content. Neuware -The first systematic methods of Fourier analysis date from the early eighteenth century with the work of Joseph Fourier on the problem of the flow of heat. (A brief history is contained in the first paper.) Given the initial tempera tu…re at all points of a region, the problem was to determine the changes in the temperature distribution over time. Understanding and predicting these changes was important in such areas as the handling of metals and the determination of geological and atmospheric temperatures. Briefly, Fourier noticed that the solution of the heat diffusion problem was simple if the initial temperature dis tribution was sinusoidal. He then asserted that any distri bution can be decomposed into a sum of sinusoids, these being the harmonics of the original function. This meant that the general solution could now be obtained by summing the solu tions of the component sinusoidal problems. The reader I have in mind is a scientist or engineer who has gathered data that he or she wants to model by a mathematical system, perhaps linear, perhaps nonlinear, and solve to obtain the best estimates, in some sense of the term 'best,' of various parameters. Because the calculations will be performed on a digital computer, the first chapter discusses floating-point numbers and their effect on mathematical operations. The chapter ends with some methods for accurately summing floating-point numbers, an operation frequently required in numerical work and one often done by the worst possible method, recursive summation. Chapter 2 gives a brief review of linear algebra and includes vector and matrix norms and condition numbers of matrices and linear systems. ' Chapter 3 presents some ideas for manipulating sparse matrices. Frequently, time or memory can be saved by use of sparse matrix techniques. The subject is extensive and the chapter is only indicative of the many techniques available. This approach, based on Cauchy integral mani folds for which the solutions of the partial differential equations are the generating characteristic curves, has the advantage that it provides a sound basis for numerical Galerkin schemes obtained by approximating the inertial manifold. The work is self-contained and the prerequisites are at the level of a graduate student. Actually, t…hese results concern an n-dimensional (n ~ 1) formal generalization of three-dimensional elasticity. Such a generalization, be sides being quite spontaneous, allows us to consider a great many inter esting mathematical situations, and sometimes allows us to clarify certain aspects of the three-dimensional case. Part of the matter presented is unpublished; other arguments have been only partially published and in lesser generality. Note that I concentrate on simultaneous local existence and uniqueness; thus, I do not deal with the more general theory of exis tence. Moreover, I restrict my discussion to compressible elastic bodies and I do not treat unilateral problems. The clever use of the inverse function theorem in finite elasticity made by STOPPELLI [1954, 1957a, 1957b], in order to obtain local existence and uniqueness for the traction problem in hyperelasticity under dead loads, inspired many of the ideas which led to this monograph. Chapter I aims to give a very brief introduction to some general concepts in the mathematical theory of elasticity, in order to show how the boundary value problems studied in the sequel arise.
