This topic is important in many areas of signal processing such as, just to give some examples, radar, so…nar, communications, and hyperspectral imaging. Most of the existing adaptive algorithms have been designed following the lead of the derivation of Kelly's detector which assumes perfect knowledge of the target steering vector. However, in realistic scenarios, mismatches are likely to occur due to both environmental and instrumental factors. When a mismatched signal is present in the data under test, conventional algorithms may suffer severe performance degradation. The presence of strong interferers in the cell under test makes the detection task even more challenging. An effective way to cope with this scenario relies on the use of 'tunable' detectors, i.e., detectors capable of changing their directivity through the tuning of proper parameters. The aim of this book is to present some recent advances in the design of tunable detectors and the focus is on the so-called two-stage detectors, i.e., adaptive algorithms obtained cascading two detectors with opposite behaviors. We derive exact closed-form expressions for the resulting probability of false alarm and the probability of detection for both matched and mismatched signals embedded in homogeneous Gaussian noise. This approach has given rise to the misnomer 'global risk' and gen- ated extensive 'lip-service' around this more broad-minded approach to managing risk factors and the prevention of CVD. This short book was devised with the idea of providing a practical summary of the rationale for management based on estimated total CV risk and the various methods associated with so-doing. Practical issues are addressed including treatment thresholds and targets for the major risk factors on which we routinely intervene, and a brief descr- tion of the major means of these interventions is provided. Whilst a multifactorial approach to CV prevention is logical and reflects the pathophysiological processes which underpin the formation of athe- sclerosis, the evidence base to guide practice using estimated CV risk ('global risk') as a threshold for intervention is essentially non-existent. Meanwhile, pending supportive evidence from randomized trials, prac- cal, pragmatic, and cost-effective approaches to preventing CVD, which is the current biggest contributor to global mortality and burden of disease, is urgently required. The hope is that this book may make a small contribution toward reducing the horrendous burden which CVD currently imposes on the world. 100 pp. Englisch.

Two of the associated questions are whether and when China might succeed the United States as the lead state in the world system. These…are interesting questions, albeit ones that are not likely to be answered in the immediate future. An alternative focus examines instead periods of systemic transition - eras in which it is conceivable that a new leader might emerge at the expense of an older system leader. Framing the question this way presumes that a) future systemic transitions remain a possibility and b) transitions do not occur abruptly but may require several decades to set up structural situations in which a transition might take place. Neither of these assumptions are carved in stone and are open to question. It may be that future systemic transitions are unlikely. Or, it may be that they will not occur as they have in the past.
