Heretofore, it was generally agreed that all of the pharmacological and behavioral properties ascribed to dopamine systems were mediated via activation or inhibition of the subtype of dopamine receptors termed D2. The properties of these receptors were first characterized in 1975 following their identification by receptor binding techniques utilizing 3H-butyrophenones, potent antipsychotic drugs, used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Although another subtype of dopamine receptor had already been identified a few years earlier, now termed the Dl receptor, its functional properties were unknow- other than the fact that it was associated with the activation of the enzyme adenylate cyclase. Our absence of knowledge of the behavioral functions of this receptor stemmed primarily from the lack of selective agonist and antagonists for DI receptors - drugs which did not also interact with D2 receptors. Selective agents for D2 receptors did exist and hence the behavioral roles of D2 receptors were easily ascribed. The work described in this text is primarily stimulated by the development of two selective Dl receptor drugs - the antagonist SCH 23390 and the agonist SKF 38393. The studies described herein clearly show that D1 receptors do indeed have many behavioral functions, on the surface often similar to those responses mediated by D2 receptors. 228 pp. Englisch.…

What was then envisaged was a workshop on chemical aspects of the oceanic mixed layer, at which consider ation would be given to the inputs, cycling and removal of material, and the problems involved in the quantitative assessment of fluxes. It was realised that any attempt to model chemical processes would need the active collaboration of workers from other fields, especially physical oceano graphers concerned with air-sea interaction and turbulence, and biological oceano~raphers with expertise in primary productivity and the cycling of particulate and dissolved organic material. The hope was that exposure to each others' ideas and problems would at least aid mutual comprehension, and might start people thinking how to develop a synthesis of the two approaches which could avoid their individual shortcomings. The purpose of this course was to present physical models, mathematical formalisms and experimental techniques relevant to the optical properties of excited states in solids. Some active physical species, such as ions or radicals, could survive indefinitely if they were completely 'isolated in space. Other active species, such as excited molecular and solid-state systems, are inherently unstable, even in isolation, due to the spontaneous mechanisms that may convert their excitation energies into radiation or heat. Physical parameters that may be used to characterize these excited systems are the localization or delocalization, and the coherence or incoherence, of their state excitations. In solids the excited states, whether they are localized (as for impurities in insulators) or delocalized (as they may occur in semiconductors), are relevant in several regards. Their de-excitation is extremely sensitive to the nature of the excitations of the systems, and a study of the de-excitation processes can yield a variety of information. We knew about people in various occupations who had gotten together to form organizations of equals to man age the settings within which they did their work. Among these organizations were a teacher-controlled public school, a fishermen's cooperative, a potters' studio, a public-interest advocacy group, and an architectural firm. We wondered how these groups functioned, and whether and how they contributed to making work satisfying for the individuals in them. These groups were, of course, pretty small potatoes, but it seemed to us that they provided a way to an understanding of some much larger current issues. Worker satisfaction has surfaced as an issue of current concern and has been repre sented in research documenting the growing expectations that the members of our society have of their work experi ence. More workers are more educated now than ever before, and more and more people seem to look to work as a personal outlet, rather than just a source of income. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia initiated in 1976 in Albany, New York under the title 'Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions'. The next two symposia were labelled 'Solution Chemistry of Surfactants' and 'Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects' held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. Y. in 1980, respectively. In 1982 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be 'Surfactants in Solution' as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Donnet developed the concept of surface chemistry of carbon and its involvement in interactions with gas, liquid and solid phases. In the late sixties, we began to study soot formation in pyrolytic systems and later on in flames. The idea of organ1z1ng a meeting on soot formation originated some four or five years ago, through discussions among Professor J.B. Howard, Dr. A. D'Alessio and ourselves. At that time the scientific community was becoming aware of the necessity to strictly control soot formation and emission. Being involved in the study of surface properties of carbon black as well as of formation of soot, we realized that the combustion community was not always fully aware of the progress made by the physical-chemists on carbon black. Reciprocally, the carbon specialists were often ignoring the research carried out on soot in flames. One objective of this workshop was to stimulate discussions between these two scientific communities. During the preparation of the meeting, and especially during the review process by the Material Science Committee of the Scientific Affairs Division of N.A.T.O. the toxicological aspect emerged as being an important component to be addressed during the workshop.
