The concept of Higgs mechanism, like most other scientific ideas, evolved over several years, with many independent and important contribu tions in the sixtees to which Peter Higgs has referred in his historical account in these proceedings. However, it was not until 1967, paraphra sing Weinberg, that 'the right ideas were applied to the right problem'! Higgs mechanism, i.e. spontaneous breaking of local gauge symmetries with scalar particles becoming the longitudinal degrees of freedom of {other wise) massless vector bosons and hence making them massive, is now an integral part of the standard {Glashow-Salam Weinberg) theory of electro weak interactions. Fortunately for us, the structure of the standard theory prevents at least one scalar field from being transformed away. How successful we have been in meeting these goals, of course, remains to be seen. We do not try to include all the minute details that are known, nor do we deal with clever tricks that all good programmers would want to use. We do try to convince the reader that there is a mathematical basis consisting of theories of bounds of linear functions and linear diophantine equations, that levels and direction vectors are concepts that arise rather natu rally, that different dependence tests are really special cases of some general tests, and so on. Some mathematical maturity is needed for a good understand ing of the book: mainly calculus and linear algebra. We have cov ered diophantine equations rather thoroughly and given a descrip of some matrix theory ideas that are not very widely known. tion A reader familiar with linear programming would quickly recog nize several concepts. We have learned a great deal from the works of M. Wolfe, and K. Kennedy and R. Allen. Wolfe's Ph. These self-referent behaviors are social in nature in the s…ense that in large measure, they are the outcomes of pervasive social processes and are themselves major influences on social outcomes. As such, self-referent behaviors have the potential to be sig nificant organizing constructs in the study of the broader field of social psychology. In any case, they are regarded here as of intrinsic interest and are the focus of this volume. Four broad categories of self-referent behaviors are considered with regard to their social bases and conse quences as these are revealed in the social psychological and sociological literature. With appropriate discriminations made within each group ing, the four categories are: self-conceiving, self-evaluating, self-feeling, and self-protective-self-enhancing responses. Following a consideration of the social antecedents and consequences of each category of self referent behaviors, I present a final summary statement that outlines a theoretical model of the additive and interactive social influences on and consequences of the mutually influential self-referent behaviors. The outline of the theoretical model reflects my synthesis of the apparently relevant theoretical and empirical literature and is intended to function as a framework for the orderly incorporation of new theoretical asser tions and more or less apparently relevant empirical associations. 224 pp. Englisch.

It is not exactly clear what these names signify, particularly in chemical engineering. Some have suggested retreading the old war horse 'Bi…ochemical Engineering' (or was it 'Biomedical Chemical Engineering). In an effort to demonstrate the on-going activities of chemical engineers in the life science area, we accepted the invitation of the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society to organize the 33rd Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium. We decided to call the symposium, Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and hence avoided the problem of having to decide which 'bio' prefix to use. Many chemical engineers in the academic and industrial world were contacted. From these contacts and a good deal of publicity arose the Symposium. The two-day meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati in the Losantiville Room of the Student Union Building on October 20-21, 1966. Twenty-one papers were presented on topics relating chemical engineering to medicine and biology. Tile papers were representation al of the scope of the activities across the country with presenters coming from Washington, California, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Texas. The reasons for this widespread recogni tion are clear. First, profe…ssionals of many disciplines deal with child abusive families and do so in a variety of ways: Physicians, hospital staff, and teachers are often the first to assess a child as the victim of abuse; social workers and child-protective personnel investigate cases of suspected abuse; court and legal authorities make determinations concerning the needs of an abused child; and mental health profes sionals, including psychologists, social workers, and family coun selors, often have responsibility for treating abusive families. Few clinical problems have received this kind of widespread interdisci plinary recognition and, given the nature and seriousness of child abusive behavior, few problems receive such intensive attention within each profession's literature. A second factor responsible for increased study of child abuse is the fact that violence directed toward children is probably the most extreme form of family dysfunction seen by counselors, therapists, and other practitioners. While other types of child-management and anger-control problems occur far more frequently, the consequences of child-abusive behavior are much more serious than the conse quences of other problems seen in child or family clinics. The material is drawn from notes for a course taught by the author at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Based on classroom…experience, an attempt has been made to (1) keep the proofs short, (2) introduce applications as soon as possible, (3) concentrate on problems that are difficult to handle by the older classical methods, and (4) emphasize periodic phenomena. To make it possible to offer the course early in the curriculum (after differential equations), no knowledge of complex variable theory is assumed. However, since a thorough study of Laplace. transforms requires at least the rudiments of this theory, Chapter 3 includes a brief sketch of complex variables, with many of the details presented in Appendix A. This plan permits an introduction of the complex inversion formula, followed by additional applications. The author has found that a course taught three hours a week for a quarter can be based on the material in Chapters 1, 2, and 5 and the first three sections of Chapter 7. If additional time is available (e.g., four quarter-hours or three semester-hours), the whole book can be covered easily. The multiplicity of proposed… therapies, each of which has its strong proponents, suggests that alcoholism is either a complex medical-social disease syndrome requiring a multipronged treatment approach or a very simple illness for which we have not yet dis covered the remedy. The latter may, indeed, be true, but we cannot use what we do not know and must use what we do know. We do, however, have the obligation to be responsible in our treatment, to provide the best that is known at this time, and to be discriminating in our prescription of appropriate treat ment for individual patients. If there is one conclusion we would like to offer in our preface, it is that alcoholics constitute a markedly heterogeneous popula tion with widely disparate needs, for whom, at least at our present level of knowledge, a broad spectrum of treatment modalities is necessary. If this is true, then probably most of this book has validity. With this volume on the treatment and rehabilitation of the chronic alco holic, we bring to completion our five-volume series, The Biology of Alcoholism. The book had its genesis in a conference held at Cornell University in the fall of 1990 that was organized by Dudley… Poston, Paul Eberts, and Michael Hannan, all professors at the time at Cornell. With the very generous financial assistance of David Call, then the dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Poston, Eberts, and Hannan put together a two-day conference oflectures and papers by human ecologists from Cornell University and elsewhere. The conference focused on sociological human ecology and celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Amos Hawley's Human Ecology (Ronald Press 1950). Professor Hawley was the keynote speaker at the conference. Many of the authors of the chapters in this volume presented earlier versions at the Cornell conference in 1990. Cornell's Departments of Rural Sociology and Sociology also contrib uted financial assistance; however, without Dean Call's very generous support, the conference would not have been possible. A few months after the conference, Poston and Michael Micklin discussed the possibility of asking the various authors of the Cornell conference papers to revise them for publication in a volume on sociological human ecology. The first classic result was the SchOnflies theorem (1910), which asserts that every 1-sphere in the plane is the boundary of a 2-cell. In the next few decades, the most notable affirmative results were the 'Schonflies theorem' for polyhedral 2-spheres in space, proved by J. W. Alexander [Ad, and the triangulation theorem for 2-manifolds, proved by T. Rad6 [Rd. But the most striking results of the 1920s were negative. In 1921 Louis Antoine [A ] published an extraordinary paper in which he 4 showed that a variety of plausible conjectures in the topology of 3-space were false. Thus, a (topological) Cantor set in 3-space need not have a simply connected complement; therefore a Cantor set can be imbedded in 3-space in at least two essentially different ways; a topological 2-sphere in 3-space need not be the boundary of a 3-cell; given two disjoint 2-spheres in 3-space, there is not necessarily any third 2-sphere which separates them from one another in 3-space; and so on and on. The fundamental aim of the program was to develop neuropsychological tests for Spanish speakers, especially elderly individuals and… those with limited edu cational attainment. The lack of norms for these populations repre sents a significant practical problem not only in developing countries but also in more developed countries. For example, norms are usually obtained with middle-class Anglo-Saxon English-speaking popula tions, often university students, and such norms do not usually include individuals older than 65 years. Furthermore, very few neuro psychological tests have been developed for Spanish speakers; fre quently, tests are translated into Spanish (often poor translations at that), but the norms used are still those obtained from English speaking populations. This volume summarizes the normative results of this research program. We anticipate that these tests and norms will be particularly useful in the neuropsychological evaluation of Spanish speakers, especially those with limited educational attainment, and the elderly. The United States represents the fifth largest Spanish-speaking coun try in the world (after Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Colombia), with over 20 million speakers. It is anticipated that by the year 2025 there will be as many Hispanics in the United States as members of all other ethnic minority groups combined. Further, about 10% of the U. Neuware -This book has its origins in the intensive short courses on scanning elec tron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis which have been taught annually at Lehigh University since 1972. In order to provide a textbook containing the materials…presented in the original course, the lecturers collaborated to write the book Practical Scanning Electron Microscopy (PSEM), which was published by Plenum Press in 1975. The course con tinued to evolve and expand in the ensuing years, until the volume of material to be covered necessitated the development of separate intro ductory and advanced courses. In 1981 the lecturers undertook the project of rewriting the original textbook, producing the volume Scan ning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis (SEMXM). This vol ume contained substantial expansions of the treatment of such basic material as electron optics, image formation, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. At the same time, a number of chapters, which had been included in the PSEM vol ume, including those on magnetic contrast and electron channeling con trast, had to be dropped for reasons of space. Moreover, these topics had naturally evolved into the basis of the advanced course.
