Neuware - In order to supplement Dr. Johnson's review we wish to make two points: I) not all grossly similar lesions should be considered t. o be due to the same etiology, even if experimentally documented, and 2) relatively few infections (syphilis, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, herpesvirus and rubella) and no immunologic disorders (except for kernicterus due to hyperbilirubinemia) are known to affect the developing human nervous system. Admittedly, since most human malformations are of unproven cause, these two points are not mutually exclusive. Rather, the challenge remains to show that any of the experimental models relates to any of the human diseases. In particular, the porencephaly-hydranencephaly spectrum could be due to ischemia in the watershed distribution of one or more branches of the internal carotid ar teries; and aqueductal stenosis could be due to secondary blockage by blood clots or debris related to hemorrhage or necrosis in the germinal matrix or periventricular white matter, lesions most likely due to hypoxia-acidosis in premature infant, who die most often of the concomitant respiratory distress syndrome. A WORD ABOUT PRESUPPOSITIONS This book is addressed to philosophers, and not necessarily to those philosophers whose interests and competence are largely mathematical or logical in the formal sense. It deals for the most part with problems in the theory of partial judgment. These problems are naturally formulated in numerical and logical terms, and it is often not easy to formulate them precisely otherwise. Indeed, the involvement of arithmetical and logical concepts seems essential to the philosophies of mind and action at just the point where they become concerned with partial judgment and' belief. I have tried throughout to use no mathematics that is not quite elementary, for the most part no more than ordinary arithmetic and algebra. There is some rudimentary and philosophically important employment of limits, but no use is made of integrals or differentials. Mathematical induction is rarely and inessentially employed in the text, but is more frequent and important in the apP'endix on set theory and Boolean algebra. - As far as logic is concerned, the book assumes a fair acquaintance with predicate logic and its techniques. The concepts of compactness and maximal consistency turn out to have important employment, which I have tried to keep self-contained, so that extensive knowledge of meta logical topics is not assumed. In a word, the book presupposes no more logical facility than is customary among working philosophers and graduate students, though it may call for unaccustomed vigor in its application.

The book differs from existing 'fundamental' books in placing much greater emphasis on what we know through laboratory experiments and their physical interpretation and less on the mathe matieal formalism. It differs from existing 'applied' books in that the choice of topics has been made for the insight they give into the behaviour of fluids in motion rather than for their practical importance. There are differences also from many existing books on fluid dynamics in the branches treated, reflecting to some extent shifts of interest in reeent years. In particular, geophysical and astrophysical applications have prompted important fundamental developments in topics such as conveetion, stratified flow, and the dynamics of rotating fluids. Difficulties in technique and interpretation may explain some lack of appreciation. Arthrography of any joint should be practised regularly to facilitate technique and to gain the necessary experience of interpretation. The surgeon or radiologist interested in this technique should have access to a regular flow of patients. The arthrogram can produce valuable information regarding the pathology of the condition which may influence treatment or prove of interest in retrospective study. In congenital dislocation of the hip routine arthrography in the past led to greater understanding of intra-articular obstruction and to the appreciation of some complications of treatment in the early moments of life. Dr Grech has made a stimulating contribution in this monograph which describes technique in the greatest detail. He provides useful guidelines for interpretation and detailed case records which will attract clinical interest. All hip conditions where arthrography might be indicated are described. Character recognition has shown the most practical success. Furthermore, the techniques span much more sophisticated applications such as interpretation of biomedical images and X-ray films, measurement of images in nuclear physics, processing of a large volume of pictorial data sent from the satellites, etc. The particular problem attacked in this thesis is computer analysis and identification of human faces. Pictures of human faces are successfully analyzed by a computer program which extracts face feature points, such as nose, mouth, eyes, and so on.
