T…he emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. An increasing number of young neurosurgeons takes an interest in the neurosurgical approaches to the treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain and epilepsy. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neglected fact that these neurosurgical treatments can be offered to large patient populations. Neurotransplantation as a novel treatment of Parkinson's disease has paved the way for the application of this technology for other indications. The pioneering work performed by the late Edward Hitchcock is reviewed here. There is a renewed interest in pallidotomy for dealing with certain forms of Parkinson's disease and certain aspects of this operation are discussed in another paper. Progress in the neurosurgical treatment of pain is dealt with by contributions on refined techniques of percutaneous cordotomy, DREZ operations and critical evaluations of spinal cord stimulation. A novel approach is a report on the experiences of treating cancer pain by intraspinal implantation of chromaffin cells. Several contributions cover the important issues of novel techniques for the study of neural dysfunction, peroperative monitoring with PET, microrecording, magneto-encephalography and other techniques. 156 pp. Englisch.

This width of range also has necessitated a somewhat arbitrary selection of evidence and has prevented full discuss…ion of any indi vidual problem. The author trusts that he has not misrepresented anyone's results or opinions, and if this has occurred, he can only plead in excuse the peculiar difficulty of giving a brief and yet accurate account of evidence of such a wide variety. The diagrams reproduced in the article have all been redrawn and in many cases the original figures or diagrams have been modified as, for instance, by recalculating dosage on the logarithmic scale. The latter are divided into two- and three-center covalent chemical bonds, metallic bonds, and exchange-repulsion forces. This approach allows statements of principle and systematic analysis. However, quantitative predictions on concrete large systems are virtually impossible, and there are no general rules that account for structural and chemical changes due to intermolecular interactions. Chemists are therefore left with qualitative descriptions in which the changes in electron densities are considered. Such models as the MO theory or the resonance concept unrealistically assume that the nuclei remain in fixed positions. Further difficulties are encountered in the attempted description on the 'nature' of the chemical bond, e.g., the forces involved. In order to avoid these difficulties an extension of the donor-acceptor concept, characterized by the comparison between equilibrium structures in different molecular environments, will be presented in this book. In this way, changes in the positions of the nuclei can be taken into account and the question of the nature of the molecular forces is no longer important.

The very high veloci…ties of these satellites ensure that their orbital motion can still be considerably affected by air density and wind. This influence can be measured using accelerometers and satellite tracking techniques.The opening chapters of this thesis provide an excellent introduction to the various disciplines that are involved in the interpretation of these observations: orbital mechanics, satellite aerodynamics and upper atmospheric physics. A subsequent chapter, at the heart of this work, covers advances in the algorithms used for processing satellite accelerometry and Two-Line Element (TLE) orbit data. Wohl werden in seinen Schriften gclegentlich Fragen der Wertlehre, der Asthetik und Ethik angeschnitten 2, aber eine eingehende Auseinandersetzung mit derartigen Fragen liegt in keinem der veroffentlichten Werke vor. In Wirklichkeit aber war ihm die Begriindung einer echten wissenschaftlichen Ethik immer ein ernstes philosophisches An liegen. The in vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 'Toxikologische Bewer tungen' ('Toxicological Evaluations') up to now. In order to make this useful information internation ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations' are available in English at the moment, a fur ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.

My first project was to publish a set of texts written by Schrodinger at the beginning of the 1950's for his seminars and lectures at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. These almost completely forgotten texts contained important insigh…ts into the interpretation of quantum mechanics, and they provided several ideas which were missing or elusively expressed in SchrOdinger's published papers and books of the same period. However, they were likely to be misinterpreted out of their context. The problem was that current scholarship could not help very much the reader of these writings to figure out their significance. The few available studies about SchrOdinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics are generally excellent, but almost entirely restricted to the initial period 1925-1927. Very little work has been done on Schrodinger's late views on the theory he contributed to create and develop. The generally accepted view is that he never really recovered from his interpretative failure of 1926-1927, and that his late reflections (during the 1950's) are little more than an expression of his rising nostalgia for the lost ideal of picturing the world, not to say for some favourite traditional picture. But the content and style of Schrodinger's texts of the 1950's do not agree at all with this melancholic appraisal; they rather set the stage for a thorough renewal of accepted representations. In order to elucidate this paradox, I adopted several strategies.

My first project was to publish a set of texts written by Schrodinger at the beginning of the 1950's for his seminars and lectures at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. These almost completely forgotten texts contained important insig…hts into the interpretation of quantum mechanics, and they provided several ideas which were missing or elusively expressed in SchrOdinger's published papers and books of the same period. However, they were likely to be misinterpreted out of their context. The problem was that current scholarship could not help very much the reader of these writings to figure out their significance. The few available studies about SchrOdinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics are generally excellent, but almost entirely restricted to the initial period 1925-1927. Very little work has been done on Schrodinger's late views on the theory he contributed to create and develop. The generally accepted view is that he never really recovered from his interpretative failure of 1926-1927, and that his late reflections (during the 1950's) are little more than an expression of his rising nostalgia for the lost ideal of picturing the world, not to say for some favourite traditional picture. But the content and style of Schrodinger's texts of the 1950's do not agree at all with this melancholic appraisal; they rather set the stage for a thorough renewal of accepted representations. In order to elucidate this paradox, I adopted several strategies.

Die Bedeutung der Herbizide ist von 1976 bis 1980 erneut gestiegen, und weltweit beträgt der Herbizid-Verkauf wertmäßig soviel, wie der Verkaufswert der Insekti zide und Fungizide zusammen! Langsam bedienen sich auch, be…i intensiverem Anbau von Nahrungsmitteln und Nutzkulturen, 'unterentwickelte' Länder aller Arten von Pestiziden und Herbiziden, und so ist mit einer weiteren Steigerung der Herbizid-Anwendung zu rechnen. Von 1976 bis 1980 wurden viele neue Versuchsprodukte, aber vergleichsweise wenig neuartige Handelsprodukte bekannt, denn der Herbizid-Standard ist schon sehr hoch, sodaß es immer schwieriger wird, Herbizide mit wesentlichen Vorteilen zu finden, zu entwickeln und zum Verkauf zu bringen. Die mengenmäßig hohe Produktion wichtiger Herbizide macht es zudem schwierig, preiswertere neue Produkte herzustellen und einzuführen. Die stark angestiegenen Forschungs-und Entwicklungskosten für ein neues Pflanzenschutzmittel - etwa 100 Mill. D- erschweren den Fortschritt außerordentlich. Wenngleich die meisten neuen Ver suchs- und Handelsprodukte Substanzgruppen entstammen, deren Bedeutung schon Ende 1976 erkannt worden war, und deren erste Versuchsprodukte bereits eine Weiterentwicklung anzeigten, so wurden doch auch spektakuläre Ent deckungen gemacht, von denen es wiederum erste Versuchsprodukte gibt. Herbi zide mit Aufwandmengen von etwa 20 g/ha, also mit extrem guter Wirksam keit zeigen, daß der Weg in unerwartetes Neuland noch lange kein Ende hat. Schon 1976 bekannte Verbindungsklassen, wie die der Diarylether-oxyalkan carbonsäuren, nicht nur von der Entdeckerfirma Hoechst AG intensiv bearbeitet, ergaben eine Fülle neuer Herbizide mit meist selektiver Gräserwirkung.

Das brachte mit sich, daB diese Theorien sich bedeutend entwickelten und verzweigten. Auf der heutigen Stufe der Wissenschaft erwies es sich daher als wiinschenswert, die Theorien, welchen der Ingenieur heute begegnet, kritisch zusammen zufassen und ihre theoretischen Grundlagen darzulegen. Bei der Abfassung dieses Buches habe ich dieses Ziel vor Augen gehalten. Aus der auBerordentlich reichen Literatur der Erddrucktheo rien konnten aber selbstredend nur jene Ergebnisse behandelt werden, die sowohl in theoretischer wie auch praktischer Hinsicht gleichfalls hervorzuheben sind. Vollstandigkeit habe ich nicht angestrebt - ich wollte dies auch nicht tun. Das Problem des Erddruckes auf biegsame Spundwande habe ich zum Beispiel nicht erwahnt, zumal die neueste deutsche Fachliteratur auf diesem Gebiet besonders reichhaltig ist. Der Leser wird im Buch alte und neue Erddrucktheorien und -methoden vor finden, die ich mit fachlicher Hingabe, mit viel Kopfzerbrechen, aber auch mit wahrer Freude beschrieben habe; ich trachtete danach, die Ansatze, die theoretischen Grundlagen in einfacher und iibersichtlicher Form zu bringen und den Anwendungsbereich iiberall klar a'Jzugrenzen. An einigen Stellen wurde bisher unveroffentlichtes Material wiedergegeben, In vielen Fallen beabsichtigte ich auch, die praktische Arbeit mit Hille von Tabellen und Diagrammen zu erleichtern.
