Understanding of the mechanisms of gene (major gene, essential) hypertension is impossible unless we comprehend the physiological properties of arterial smooth muscle. Since Langendorff's discovery of the role of calcium ions in muscle contraction in 1895, we have made immense progress in our knowledge of the role of the calcium ion in the excitation-contraction coupling of the arterial smooth mus cle. Investigation of the molecular mechanisms controlling the cellu lar basis of calcium ion action has been established with the discovery of the calcium binding protein (Ebashi 1963). The participation of the calcium induced calcium mechanism in the contraction of muscle has been directly demonstrated by using chemically skinned smooth muscle fibers (Endo et al. 1977). Methods for intracellular free cal cium contents and calcium channel activity have been developed and contribute to the study of the role of the calcium ion in arterial smooth muscle contractility. Such recent progress promotes study of the basic physiological, biochemical, and molecular properties of the calcium channel, and, in the field of hypertension research, the sodium and potassium channels. 420 pp. Englisch.

Much attention has been given to fast synaptic transmission, which pr…edominantly regulates impulse-to-impulse transmission. Slow synaptic transmission and modu lation, however, sometimes have been neglected in considering and attempting to understand brain function. Slow synaptic potentials and modulation occur with a considerable delay in response to the accumulation of synaptic and modulatory inputs. In these contexts, they are plastic in nature and play important roles in information processing in the brain. A symposium titled 'Slow Synaptic Responses and Modulation' was held as the satellite symposium to the 75th Annual Meeting of the Physiological Society of Japan on March 30-31, 1998, in Kanazawa. The theme was selected not only for the reason mentioned above, but also because of the considerable involvement of many Japanese scholars in establishing the basic issues. Following the dawn of synaptic physiological research, as Sir John Eccles, Sir Bernard Katz, and Professor Stephen Kuffler carried out pioneer work, Professor Kyozou Koketsu and Professor Benjamin Libet, the students of Sir John Eccles, and their colleagues established the concept of slow synaptic responses and modulation by studying vertebrate sympathetic ganglia. The need for greater understanding of the pathophysiology of cardiovascular dis eases is more critical now than ever before because modern advances in basic and clinical sciences have prolonged the average life expectancy. Using a wide range of molecular and electrophysiological techniques, major advances are occurring frequently in the field of cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. Recent evidence indicates that the conversion of normal cells to so-called 'clinical cancer' is the prerequisite for a multistage process which is intimately associated with an accumulation of multiple gene alterations including both oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes. Gastric cancer is no exception, in that it reveals multiple gene changes whose scenario differs, depending on their occurrence in intestinal-type or diffuse-type gastric cancers. This book was planned for publication by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer in order to shed light on basic research and clinical practice in gastric cancer.
