This book is a collection of 44 papers in various areas of computer graphics selected from papers presented at Graphics Interface '85. Graphics Interface '85, held from May 27 to 31 in Montreal, was the first truly international computer graphics conference in Canada. This year, for the first time, the conference was presented jointly by the Com puter Graphics Society and the Canadian Man-Computer Communications Society. This new arrangement gave the conference international scope. The conference was spon sored by the Department of Communications in Ottawa, the Department of Science and Technology in Quebec, Supply and Services Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineer ing Research Council of Canada, Hydro-Quebec, the 'Association Canadienne Fran'aise pour I' Avancement des Sciences', and the Canadian Broadcasting Corpora tion. Graphics Interface '85 was organized by '1'Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales' of the University of Montreal. Over 100 papers were submitted to the conference , but 64 were selected by the inter national program committee for presentation. Since 1836, when pancreatic cancer was first described,… progress has been made in pancreatic cancer morphology, and a number of classifications have been proposed. All of these classifications are mainly based on morphological characteristics. Some are too detailed to be of practical use while others are more pragmatic. Some of the inherent problems in the previous classifications included difficulties in obtaining an adequate number of pan creatic tumors for examination and insufficient clinical data and follow-up. With the increasing incidence of pancreatic cancer in many parts of the world during the past six decades, and with the availability of more tumors to patho logists, advances have been made in pancreatic tumor studies. Classifications by Cubilla and Fitzgerald and by Kloppel, which are generally similar, mostly considered prominent morphological features and their histogenesis. These pathology-oriented classifications, although complete, were not practical from the standpoint of clinicians concerned with the prognosis of individual tumors. 320 pp. Englisch.

On August 27, the day preceding the opening of the meeting, a typhoon made a d…irect attack on Tokyo, welcoming guests from all over the world in a rather violent way. To our great relief, the weather during the week of the meeting turned out to be exceptionally agreeable for that time of year in Tokyo. We were also pleased to see the entire scheduled course of the meeting, including the social activities, carried out smoothly and the contents of the program favorably appraised. The meeting was attended by 518 scientists from 30 countries. Recent unrest following steps toward democratization in the Communist bloc gave rise to some apprehension; therefore, we were particularly pleased to see attendants from China, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. No one could possibly have predicted the drastic change in Eastern Europe that followed, but again, we were relieved to learn (by a subsequent letter) of the safety of an attendant from Rumania, who had been our greatest concern. A total of 384 papers were contributed to the meeting. The abstracts for all have been published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Medicine, vol 2, No. 2/3 (1989). This proceedings carries 64 subjects introduced in the Special Session. 524 pp. Englisch.

In the course of 5000 years, since the first record in Egypt, advances in… lifestyle and technology have brought about our modern civilized society. However, as a result of civilization, currently the total number of severe head injuries worldwide is believed to exceed 10000000 and the number of severe spinal injuries is believed to be more than 75 000 each year. This means that central nervous system injury is not only the oldest topic in neurosurgery, but that it is also of critical importance in modern life. Taking these problems into consideration, the International Neurotraumatology Committee was organized in 1965 as an affiliated Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. The first scientific meeting was convened by the Committee in Marseilles in 1970. Nine further meetings were subsequently held, in Europe, Africa, and South America. The meeting was first named 'International Conference on Recent Advances in Neurotrauma tology' (ICRAN) by Professor Phillip Harris, when the scientific meeting was held in Edinburgh in 1982. The tenth meeting, (ICRAN 1992), the first one in Asia, was held at Karuizawa, Japan, from September 23rd to 26th, 1992. 524 pp. Englisch.

Due to the rapid progress in research on both basic and clinical aspects of viral hepatitis and liver disease, the state of the art in this field is continually being updated, and our book provides a broad and in-depth survey of current work. The major topics in our book include molecular biology of the five known hepatitis viruses (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV), clinical implications of genetic variants of HBV and HCV, interferon treatment of HCV-related liver disease, and worldwide epidemiology and control of viral hepatitis. New subjects not seen in previous books, such as genotypes of HCV, are also covered. Expanding knowledge about the heterogeneity of the HCV genome has revealed a great variety of genotypes as well as their association with host pathogenesis and their varying responsiveness to interferon therapy. By issuing over 100 thousand calls for pa…pers through various journals and magazines as weil as by inviting reputed specialists, and by selecting high quality papers which present the state of the art in computer graphics out of many papers thus received, this book 'Frontiers in Computer Graphics' has been compiled to present the substance of progress in this field. This volume serves also as the final version of the Proceedings of Computer Graphics Tokyo '84, Tokyo, Japan, April 24-27, 1984 which, as a whole, attracted 16 thousand participants from all over the world; about two thousand to the conference and the remaining 14 thousand to the exhibition. This book covers the following eight major frontiers of computer graphics in 29 papers: 1. geometry modelling, 2. graphie languages, 3. visualization techniques, 4. human factors, 5. interactive graphics design, 6. CAD/CAM, 7. graphie displays and peripherals, and 8. graphics standardization. Geometry modelling is most essential in displaying any objects in computer graphics.
