It has recently been established that immediate reconstruction of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during tumor extirpation is effective in recovery of their original voices in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (VFP). The activity of the thyroarytenoid muscle is needed to recover normal voices. Nerve-muscle pedicle (NMP) flap implantation with a refined technique to the thyroarytenoid muscle is a novel method for that purpose. NMP flap implantation combined with arytenoid adduction was applied by the author to patients suffering from dysphonia and most patients did recover their nearly normal voices after surgery.This book provides readers with (1) what the currently prevalent surgical procedures are, (2) unsatisfactory results of these conventional procedures, (3) results of immediate recurrent laryngeal nerve reconstruction during tumor extirpation, (4) the outcome of delayed reinnervation combined with arytenoid adduction in patients with VFP and further, (5) the scientific basis that explains the reasons why the author's method is effective in the recovery of patients' own pre-paralysis, normal voices. 176 pp. Englisch.

However, our understanding of these roles remains limited, simply because there have been few opportunities to examine and address the ecological impacts of large disturbance events. The scale of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake makes it one of the largest hazards in the past 1000 years. Thus, this book provides a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of the ecological impacts of large and rare disturbances and the implications of these events in the conservation and management of coastal ecosystems. Following an outline of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the book's content is divided into two major parts. Part I reports on studies examining the ecological impacts of the tsunamis on sub-tidal and tidal animal communities, while Part II focuses on terrestrial plant communities in Japan's coastal Tohoku area. Chronic inflammation is hence called as the 'silent killer'; it upsets the body's homeostatic mechanism insidiously. In spite of these developments, we know very little about the mechanism underlying chronic inflammation. Particularly, we do not know precisely what induces chronic inflammation or what promotes its prolongation in a spatiotemporal framework. Neither do we have clear knowledge about how chronic inflammation destroys various tissues or how it predisposes individuals to many different diseases. To make the situation worse, we have no effective treatment against chronic inflammation.Since 2010, two major research programs (CREST and PRESTO) aimed at clarifying the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation were launched in Japan, and investigators of different research areas with a brilliant track record were selected by their research proposals. Subsequently they have made their best efforts to answer the conundrum concerning chronic inflammation. This book is a compendium of such research efforts.
