Of prominence was the pressing need for an in-depth and sc…holarly exam ination of the interface between medicine and psychiatry. I had been amazed to find that not a single book, to my mind, adequately addressed the psy chological symptoms and manifestations of both common and rare medical illness. It seemed to me that there was a need for a work which would achieve the following goals: First, it would assist in the differential diagnosis of functional psychiatric symptoms versus symptoms secondary to recog nized or unrecognized medical illness; second, it would elucidate the psy chological symptoms resulting from pharmacologic and other therapeutic interventions in medical illness; and third, it would examine the use of psychopharmacological agents in the presence of medical illness and the drugs used to treat that illness. Dr. Jefferson is Board Certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry, and both Drs. Jefferson and Marshall have extensive clinical experience from their many years of consultation/liaison work in psychiatry. Their experience and expertise have resulted in what I believe to be a monumental contri bution to the literature.

It is now possible to produce at the laboratory scale, ultra-short 13 pulses with a duration of 100 f…emtoseconds (10- second) and a power of the order 12 of 1 terawatt (10 Watt). Under these conditions, very high peak intensities may be obtained and electric fields exceeding typical electron binding fields in atoms are generated. The interaction of an atom or a molecule with such electromagnetic fields has a highly non-linear character which leads to unexpected phenomena. Amongst them, - above-threshold ionization (ATI) i.e. the absorption of additional photons in excess of the minimal number necessary to overcome the ionization potential and its molecular counterpart, above-threshold dissociation (ATD); - generation of very high harmonics of the driving field; - stabilization of one-electron systems in strong fields. These processes were the main topics of two international meetings which were held in 1989 and 1991 in the United States under the common name SILAP (Super-Intense Laser-Atom Physics).

Neuware - The impetus for the conference held at Bombannes, France in May, 1982 arose out of a Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Working Group on 'Mathematical Models in Biological Oceanography'. This group was chaired by K.H. Mann and held two meetings in 1977 and 1979. At both meetin…gs it was felt that, although reductionist modelling of marine ecosystems had achieved some successes, the future progress lay in the development of holistic ecosystem models. The members of the group (K.H. Mann, T. Platt, J.M. Colebrook, D.F. Smith, M.J.R. Fasham, J. Field, G. Radach, R.E. Ulanowicz and F. Wulff) produced a critical review of reductionist and holistic models which was published by the Unesco Press (Platt, Mann and Ulanowicz, 1981). One of the conclusions of this review was that, whether holistic or reductionist models are preferred, it is critically important to increase the scientific effort in the measurement of physiological rates for the computation of ecological fluxes. The Working Group therefore recommended that an international meeting should be organized which would attempt to bring together theoretical ecologists and biological oceanographers to assess the present and future capability for measuring ecological fluxes and incorporating these data into models. An approach was made to the Marine Sciences Panel of the NATO Science Committee who expressed an interest in funding such a meeting. They awarded a planning grant and a planning group was formed consisting of M.J.R. Fasham, M.V. Angel, T. Platt, R.E.

Das Buch ist aueh frei von der Meinung, man müsse - um das Gesicht zu wahren - auf Entdeckungsschritten verharren, die einst originell waren, nun aber teilweise überholt sind. So sehe ich den Sinn dieses Buches. Ob es ganz objektiv ist - Das wäre zuviel verlangt! Denn wer kann die Entwicklung seiner Kinder ganz objektiv sehen Daß es redlich ist, darauf kommt es an; und das muß man ihm zuerkennen. Nicht das Durchsetzen einer Doktrin wird hier betrieben, sondern hier werden dargestellt die Entwicklung und der Inhalt eines neu-entstandenen Wissenschaftszweiges und seiner vielfäl tigen und sorgsam abgewogenen Methoden. Das Buch ist aueh frei von der Meinung, man müsse - um das Gesicht zu wahren - auf Entdeckungsschritten verharren, die einst originell waren, nun aber teilweise überholt sind. Der Ver fasser zeigt sich offen jeder sinnvollen Kritik und Korrektur, ist jedoch ausrei chend unhöflich, um unhaltbare Einwände begründet abzuweisen.

Es zeigt sich immer wieder, daß bei d…en kleinsten konstruktiven Aufgaben, die dem Anfänger ohne Vorbild gestellt werden, die Schwierigkeiten so groß sind, daß er sich ohne eine zielbewußte Führung in ein endloses Probieren verliert. Aus diesem Grunde hat der Verfasser aus einer jahrzehntelangen Lehrerfahrung heraus den Versuch unternommen, in einer leicht faßlichen und geordneten Form einen methodischen Arbeitsplan zu zeigen, der es dem Anfänger ermöglicht, auf ratio nellem Wege bei seinen Konstruktionsübungen zum Ziele zu kommen. Daß dabei, wie die Erfahrung zeigt, die Freude am Konstruieren geweckt und das Selbst bewußtsein gestärkt wird, ist als weiterer Vorteil zu buchen. Die Konstruktionslehre ist für den allgemeinen Maschinenbau geschrieben und behandelt daher die der Feinmechanik eigenen Herstellungsverfahren nicht. Um dem Buch keinen zu großen Umfang zu geben und dadurch die übersicht lichkeit und den wesentlichen Kern zu verdecken, wurden Zahlentafeln, Dia gramme usw. weggelassen, da für diesen Zweck Taschen-und Lehrbücher zur Ver fügung stehen. Der Verfasser ist sich im klaren, daß eine Konstruktionslehre, welche nur aus einer Sammlung von Richtlinien und Regeln besteht, keinem Anfänger die Technik des Konstruierens vermitteln kann. Nur Übung führt hier zum Meister. Daher wurden eine Reihe von übungsbeispielen dem Text beigefügt.
