The surv…ival of a total hip replacement depends principally on the enduring integrity of the fixation interfaces and of the articular interface. The design of the stem and the material properties of cement largely determine the state of the component-cement inter face, while the bone-cement interface is significantly influenced by both mechanical and biological factors. The surface finish and shape of cementless implants are designed to preserve the integrity of biological fixation (osseo-integration) at the bone-component interface. Once again, both mechanical and biological factors have to be considered, while bioactive coatings accelerate bone ongrowth. Metal-on-polyethylene is the most widely used articular interface. However, it has been suggested that wear of polyethylene is one of the major factors contributing to failure of total hip replacements. The increasing prevalence of total hip replacement in younger patients has stimulated the investigation of alternative, more durable couples -including ceramic-polyethylene, ceramic-ceramic and metal-on-metal. Modularity provides greater intra-operative flexibility, but each new modular interface introduces new mechanisms of failure. These need to be anticipated and appropriate measures taken to avoid them. Hopefully this book will provide a better understanding of the factors that contribute to stable interfaces and long-term survival of total hip arthroplasty. 184 pp. Englisch.

Long gone are the days when the only 'materials processing' carried out was virtually the forming of conventional metals and alloys, and when the development of a new product or process in a great number of cases called for several months of repetitive trial-and-error,' with many (mostly intuition- or experience-based) expensive and time-consuming modifications being made to the dies, until success was achieved. Even when a 'successful' product was formed, its mechanical properties, in terms of springback and dimensional accuracy, thickness variations, residual stresses, surface finish, etc. , remained to be determined. Bulk-forming operations usually required expensive machining to be carried out on the product to impart the required dimensional accuracy and surface fmish. Over the years, the experience-based craft of metal forming has given way to the science of materials processing. In some of these domains, people interact with the computers using a mouse, keyboard and a 17-inch monitor, but present-day inter faces take a variety of forms, including motion-capture technology and displays of up to several metres in height and width. The trend of applying computer technologies in the domain of art and culture has been one of the pivots of a Danish research project, Staging of Virtual Inhabited 3D Spaces. The results of the project are presented in a series of four volumes, of which this book is the last one. While there are many international con ferences… in this fruitful borderland of mathematics, computer graphics and engineering, this is the oldest, the most frequent and the only one to concen trate on surfaces. Contributors to this volume come from twelve different countries in Eu rope, North America and Asia. Their contributions reflect the wide diversity of present-day applications which include modelling parts of the human body for medical purposes as well as the production of cars, aircraft and engineer ing components. Some applications involve design or construction of surfaces by interpolating or approximating data given at points or on curves. Others consider the problem of 'reverse engineering'-giving a mathematical descrip tion of an already constructed object. A variety of models having positive linear system behaviour can be found in engineering, management science, economics, social sciences, biology and medicine, etc. The basic mathematical tools for analysis and synthesis of linear systems are linear spaces and the theory of linear operators. Positive linear systems are defined on cones and not on linear spaces. This is why the theory of positive systems is more complicated and less advanced. The theory of positive systems has some elements in common with theories of linear and non-linear systems.
