Rather it may be described as a resource book or survey of the elements/essentials of feedback control systems. The material included is a result of my development, over a perio…d of several years, of summaries written to supplement a number of standard textbooks for undergraduate and early post-graduate courses. Those notes, plus more work than I care right now to contemplate, are intended to be helpful both to students and to professional engineers. Too often, standard textbooks seem to overlook some of the engineering realities of (roughly) how much things cost or how big of hardware for computer programs for simple algorithms are, sensing and actuation, of special systems such as PLCs and PID controllers, of the engineering of real systems from coverage of SISO theories, and of the special characteristics of computers, their programming, and their potential interactions into systems. In particular, students with specializations other than control systems are not being exposed to the breadth of the considerations needed in control systems engineering, perhaps because it is assumed that they are always to be part of a multicourse sequence taken by specialists. The lectures given to introduce at least some of these aspects were more effective when supported by written material: hence, the need for my notes which preceded this book.

During the last decade, the quality of image acquisition made tremendous progress due to advanced data acquisition systems, low noise electronics and suitable mechan ical and micromechanical constructions. However, a lot of fundamental, unsolved questions about the interaction between probing tip and sample remain. This vol ume contains 60 contributions dedicated to these problems. Most of the articles are review articles presenting. condensed and relevant information in a way suitable for both students and specialists. Topics that are covered are instrumental aspects, de signs of force microscopes in various environments, such as ambient pressure, low temperature, ultrahip vacuum and liquids. An important part of the workshop was dedicated to theory, Including all initio calculations and molecular dynamics simula tions. Mechanical properties, such as adhesion, friction and wear, on the micrometer and nanometer scale were also treated intensively.

In fact, prejudices stemming from the archaic concept of mind-body dualism are so difficult to eradicate that even a skilled psychiatrist may find it hard to distinguish a psychiatric symptom from a socially transgressive behavior. The dilemma becomes even more salient for drug addiction, since many of the substances which induce abuse and dependence are illegal, and their production, trade and use are forbidden by law. If the use of heroin is connoted as a crime, it may become controversial to recognize its chronic sequelae as a disease. Hence, withdrawal symptoms may alternatively be attributed to drug effects, or labelled as immoral attitudes arising from a vicious personality. However, the physician's judgement, which has to be merely instrumental at improving the patient's quality of life, should never be influenced by such complex setting. In fact, the only concern of the physician must be that of ascertaining the causes of symptoms and of removing them: if symptoms are induced by the toxic effect of a drug, he has to use the most effective antidote, and then proceed towards a detoxification; if they are due to withdrawal, a substitutive substance should be given initially. In the case of narcotics, substitutive therapy on a maintenance basis may become mandatory. 252 pp. Englisch.

Until now international conferences have provided the exchange of information but have remained highly specialised so it was time to give thought to the organisation of topical and advanced lectures where the multidisciplinarity and the didactic approach are paramount. L'ecole des Houches was ideally devoted to that purpose. The meeting : ' Luminescence of porous silicon and silicon nanostructures' was the first international school on this topic but some aspects in the organisation and the attendance have given an international workshop flavor to it. The school by itself has trained 82 'students', most of them were students starting their Ph. Almost all significant uses of computers to support human endeavours depend on long-lived and large-scale systems. As expectations and ambitions rise so the sophistication of the systems we attempt to build also rises. The quality and integrity of the systems and their feasibility for supporting large groups of co-operating people depends on their technical founda tion. Persistent object systems are being developed which provide a more robust and yet simpler foundation for these persistent applications. The workshop followed the tradition of the previous workshops in the series, focusing on the design, implementation and use of persistent object systems in particular and persistent systems in general. There were clear signs that this line of research is maturing, as engineering issues were discussed with the aid of evidence from operational systems. The work presented covered the complete range of database facilities: transactions, concurrency, distribution, integrity and schema modifica tion. The aims of this workshop are twofold: first, to provide a forum for the presentation and in-depth discussion of scientific achievements in the field of advanced databases that will effectively improve the building and use of future information systems; second, to establish and increase communication between research communities which were formerly separated and, therefore, had only rare opportunities to interact. It should establish contacts between researchers from the East and from the West to make exchange of ideas possible and to trigger collaborations. Most of these courses are taught at the undergraduate level as part of, or adjacent to, the second-…year calculus sequence. Although many students will ultimately find the material in these courses more valuable than calculus, they often experience a class that consists mostly of learning to implement a series of computational algorithms. The objective of this text is to bring a different vision to this course, including many of the key elements called for in current mathematics-teaching reform efforts. Three of the main components of this current effort are the following: 1. Mathematical ideas should be introduced in meaningful contexts, with after a clear understanding formal definitions and procedures developed of practical situations has been achieved. 2. Every topic should be treated from different perspectives, including the numerical, geometric, and symbolic viewpoints. 3. The important ideas need to be visited repeatedly throughout the term, with students' understan9ing deepening each time. This text was written with these three objectives in mind. The first two chapters deal with situations requiring linear functions (at times, locally linear functions) or linear ideas in geometry for their understanding. Neuware -The discovery of bright visible light emission from porous silicon has opened the door to various nanometer sized silicon structures where the confinement of carriers gives rise to interesting physical properties. While the high effici…ency of the light emission in the visible range is the common and the most prominent feature, their structures display similar properties with other highly divided materials (even non semiconductors), and then justify a multidisciplinary approach. This along with potential applications has attracted a large number of researchers followed by students to be trained. Until now international conferences have provided the exchange of information but have remained highly specialised so it was time to give thought to the organisation of topical and advanced lectures where the multidisciplinarity and the didactic approach are paramount. L'ecole des Houches was ideally devoted to that purpose. The meeting : ' Luminescence of porous silicon and silicon nanostructures' was the first international school on this topic but some aspects in the organisation and the attendance have given an international workshop flavor to it. The school by itself has trained 82 «students», most of them were students starting their Ph.
