The theory of computational complexity deals with such limits, in particular whether solving an n-dimensional version of a particular problem can be accomplished… with, say, 2 n n steps or will inevitably require 2 steps. Such a bound, together with a physical limit on computational speed in a machine, could be used to establish a speed limit for a particular problem. But there is nothing in the theory of computational complexity which precludes the possibility of constructing analog devices that solve such problems faster. It is a general goal of neural network researchers to circumvent the inherent limits of serial computation. As an example of an n-dimensional problem, one might wish to order n distinct numbers between 0 and 1. One could simply write all n! ways to list the numbers and test each list for the increasing property. There are much more efficient ways to solve this problem; in fact, the number of steps required by the best sorting algorithm applied to this problem is proportional to n In n .

The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series is a serial publication of the 'advances' type, carrying the subtitle Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the Progress sequence is strongly thematic, in that it is limited to some well-defined domain of cognitive developmental research (e.g., logical and mathematical development, development of learning). All Progress volumes will be edited collections. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors are being published as separate volumes within the series.

The viruses are now known to contain a single positive strand of RNA. About 50% of corona virus infections result in clinical illness. About 5% of common colds are caused by strain DC 43 in winter. Chapter 8, Cytomegalovirus: Sections on pathogenesis of CMV in relation to organ transplantation and mononucleosis, as well as sections on the risk and features of con genital infection and disease, have been expanded. There are encouraging preliminary results with a live CMV vaccine, but the questions of viral persistence and oncogenicity require further evaluation.

Indeed, its roots can ultimately be traced into anti quity, since, in commerce and daily life, man has always carried out reactions on polymers, e. g.…in primitive dyeing and tanning operations. In more modern times Prof. Staudinger is commonly acknowledged as the investigator most responsible for the renais sance of interest in 'polymer analogous' reactions. In recent years it has become apparent that the 'black art' of conducting chemical reactions on macromolecules is an area which is amenable to basic scientific investigation. Examples of important developments which have come 'about ,in part ,as a result of this realization have been the advances in molecular biology (which may be rightly considered as the biochemistry of macromo lecules) and by such milestone achievements as solid phase pep tide synthesis and affinity chromatography. These few selected examples all have macromolecules (biological and synthetiC) in common. The stimulation to wide areas of scientific endeavor re sulting from these developments would undoubtedly have occurred sooner, and certainly with much less difficulty, had the various investigators been aware of the problems attending attempts at performing reactions on polymers. Its relationship with Henoch-Sch6nlein purpura is especially interesting. The discovery of IgA nephropathy has caused an explosion of interest and research. Parallel with the increased understanding of the renal disease, there has occurred similar incremental knowledge in such diverse fields as the structure and function of the glomerular mesangium, the biology of mucosal immu- nity, and the IgA immune response. As environmental scientists we are conscious of the interrelatedness, not only of environmental systems, but of nations as well. Materials are continually moved across boundaries by human as well as natural agencies. The extent, rate and nature of transfer for most pollutants is largely unknown. We can only guess which of the numerous chemicals produced are candidates for concern. More important still is our practical ignorance of the mechanisms of chronic effects upon natural systems and of the concentrations, combinations and circumstances that may lead to irreversibilities or to serious consequences for man. We know very little also regarding the potential for or the kinds of indirect effects that might occur. With respect to the environmentltself, we know little of its assimilative capacity with regard to widely dispersed pollutants and their transformation products. But what we do know is disquieting, and a much-improved system for the evaluation and management of toxic and hazardous chemicals is needed.

For short periods the radio measurements have been combined with meteorolo gical measurements in order to describe the structure of the re fractive index field. The heigth…of layers was continously deter mined by remote sensing techniques and their thickness and inten sity by airborne and balloonborne instruments. From these data, field strengths have been calculated for scatter, reflection and duct propagation. It will be shown that reflection propagation dominates at the low frequency end. Whilst at higher frequencies, very sharp layers are required for reflection propagation. At these frequencies, high signals are generally caused by duct propagation. 1.1 Instruments and plan for the experiments. The radio measurements were performed with the following equipment. 5000 MHz: Transmitted power 500 kW (pulsed). Reflector antennas. Free space field strength over the path + 15 dBm. 460 MHz: Transmitted power 10 W (CW) 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 65 dBm. 170 MHz: Transmitted power 10, W(CW). 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 60 dBm. The antenna heights for the transmitters and receivers were 100 m above sea level. The field strengths were recorded on ink recorders and simul taneously sampled, digitized and evaluated on line in a minicom puter. For the meteorological measurements, the following equipment were used: Airborne microwave refractometer and thermistor, flown up to 2000 m.

Session III dealt with the fundaments of the theory of spectral and photometrical evolution of stellar populations. and with recent developments in the theory of stellar structure. a necessary step to model and understand galactic evolution.

Being a country rich in water - at least in terms of surface area - and low-lying, problems related to water are as old as the nation itself. The problems… in regard to water quality are becoming more acute and complicated due to the progressive rise in air and ground pollution. Glaring examples are the acid rains and contamination of ground-water resources by toxic, and often illegal, waste dumps. Being a delta country, the Netherlands is also very vulnerable to pollution from the water sources outside the country's national boundaries, i.e. the rivers Rhine, Meuse and ScheIdt. Not only the national but also the international authorities are active in developing measures to both prevent and combat water pollution, and to restore as far as possible the natural balance or a 'reasonable' water quality. The pollution abatement programmes are based on ecological theories; accepting waterbodies as aquatic ecosystems, the authorities concerned try to influence and lead the progresses in the systems to reach or maintain the desired ecosystem structure. Suter II (1981) mentioned a number of reasons why the attempts to use ecosystem theories to assess the impacts on the environment have been disappointing to date. It is clear that one of the reasons for the failure is lack of proper knowledge.

Neuware - The idea of this NATO school was born during philosophical discussions with Dr Brevard on the present and future of NMR during a night walk under the palm trees in Biskra during a seminar held in this oasis. It was clear for us that the recent progress in the field of NMR, especially inver…se spectroscopy and the development of MAS, was opening new perspectives for chemists. We realised also that organometallic and inorganic chemists were not clearly informed about the potentialities of all the new methods. NA TO, with its summer schools, was offering a good opportunity to propose to the chemical community a session where those problems would be largely developped. This School is then the prolongation of the two previous ones: Palermo in 1976 on 'the less receptive nuclei' and Stirling in 1982 on 'the multinuclear approach to NMR spectroscopy' . It was divided into two sub-sessions: NMR in the liquid state and NMR in the solid state. This is reflected in the book organization. As indicated by the title of this School, we were mainly concerned with the methodological aspects of multinuclear NMR. If many examples are given, they appear only as a support for the understanding of the theory or in explanation of some practical aspects of the different experiments. Each domain is introduced by a lecture which presents selected examples.
