The text describes a case study that is the result of a large scale project in the Corn Belt and Great Plains Nutrient Ecoregion. This study is the first to identify relationships between fish assemblages and nutrient concentrations by Nitrogen species. Species optima based on sensitivity and tolerance to nutrients is modeled. Nutrient Biotic indices calibrated for application are based on the results of years of biological indicator development. Test response intervals and Shift response intervals are formulated and validated against relevant biological assemblage shifts. This case study is the first to suggest recommended values for the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle with identifiable shifts caused in biological assemblages. This will provide watershed and environmental managers with the information needed to manage the inputs into the world's dead zones. 76 pp. Englisch.

For practical and scientific reasons therefore it is interesting to know what choices they make and how they arrive at them. An approach to this question can be made via psychology. However, it is also possible to approach it on a more formal basis. In this book Dr. Wedde pohl describes the logical structure of an individual's rational choice. It is this formal, logical approach to the decision problem that makes the book interesting reading matter for all those who are engaged in the study of individual choice. The introduction apart this study may be divided into two parts. The first part, consisting of chapters II and III, deals with choice theory on a very abstract level. In chapter II some mathematical concepts are presented and in chapter III two related choice models are treated, the first one based on preferences, the second one on choice functions. The second part consists of chapters IV, V and VI and covers consumer choice theory. After the pre sentation of the mathematical tools, two models that are extensions of the models of chapter III are dealt with. In the discussion of consumer choice theory the concept of duality plays an important role and it is found that duality is closely related to the notion of favourability introduced in chap ter II I. Mr. Weddepohl's study forms an introduction to a larger research project to develop the theory of collective choice. 184 pp. Englisch.

Both the increasing significance of public goods and the deficiencies of the private goods-oriented allocation mechanisms call for a re orientation of the classical general equilibrium models such as the one designed by Walras exactly a century ago. Although several approaches to this problem are possible, the duality approach seems to be very fruitful. In this study, Dr. Ruys applies and develops the mathematical theory of polarity to gain a deeper insight into the economic theory of value. He not only uses the duality approach to simplify formal proofs related to public goods, but he also gives an interpretation to the application of polarity operations which goes far, beyond its formal significance. This study is in a way closely related to the publication 'Axiomatic choice models' by Dr. H. N. Weddepohl, which is volume 3 of the Tilburg Studies on Economics. 252 pp. Englisch.

As many as 50 % of all pregnancies terminate as miscarriages, and in the majority of cases this is the result of faulty intrauterine development. Major congenital malformations are present in at least 2 % of all liveborn infants, and 22 % of all sti1Ibirths and infant deaths are associated with severe congenital anomalies. Not surprisingly, there has been a great proliferation of research into the problems of developmental abnormalities over the past few decades. This series, Advances in the Study of Birth Defects, was conceived in order to provide a comprehensive focal source of up-to-date information for physi cians concerned with the health of the unborn child and for research workers in the fields of fetal medicine and birth defects. The first four volumes featured recent experimental work on selected areas of high priority and intensive investigation, including mechanisms of teratogenesis, teratological evaluation, molecular and cellular aspects of abnormal development, and neural and behavioural teratology. It seems logical and timely that the clinical aspects should now be presented. Accordingly, leading experts were invited to review a broad range of common problems from the standpoint of embryology, aetiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management. This volume deals with cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary malformations. 248 pp. Englisch.

In his introduction, Stephen Rothman, of the University of Chicago, USA and one of the driving forces behind research on skin at the time, wrote: 'The pilary system is a perfect micr9cosmic structure. In this microcos mos we find birth, development, ageing and death, activity and rest, color for mation and decolorification, greasiness and dryness, infection and sterilization, hypertrophy and atrophy, Qenign tumours and malignant ones. ' He foresaw the human pilary system as a model for the study of a multitude of human diseases including ageing and cancer. It was not, how ever, until the seventies that the development of micro-biochemical tech niques indeed allowed the use of the human hair follicle as a convenient biopsy tissue for Biomedical Research in general. Measurement of enzyme activities, and important co-factors, and culturing of cells from single follicles all became possible. In the eighties dermal papilla cells were grown in cul ture and this opened the way to study hair differentiation in vitro. Studying hair differentiation is, in fact, studying growth regulation and it is this aspect that by far transcends the importance of studying hair growth itself. Let us not forget that metastatic prostate cancer is treated with the same drug -cyproterone acetate -that is used for the treatment of alopecia and hirsutism in women. 348 pp. Englisch.

In Britain, it is not a recognised profession or academic discipline in its own right. Perhaps it is part of our national style and heritage that it never should be so compartmentalised. Indeed, energy economics is an interest which cannot easily be con strained within even national boundanes: international energy mar kets impinge everywhere through external demand, supply and price affecting profoundly every aspect of the economy. THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF ENERGY ECONOMICS Over the last few years, an increasing need has been widely perceived for free and open discussion of the major energy and eco nomic issues of the day. Easy communication and the joint imple mentation of technological progress seem, worldwide, the safest route to resolving national and international problems. The demands of public programs and policies created enormous pressures for improved information and analyses. In the field of drug abuse these pressures were compounded by the rapid rise of drug use and the absence of much critical information and analysis. The most elementary steps to develop a data base were just beginning, and many years of effort would be required before the accumulation of knowledge could produce. a strong foundation for public policy. There has been enormous progress in improving knowledge about drug abuse since the mid-1960s. However, as in many fields, research has concentrated on a few questions while others largely are ignored, and even where studies exist there are problems of assimilation. Information is widely dispersed, not always accessible and often not in the most useful form. Many analysts do not have adequate understanding of the ways in which studies might enter into policy development, while at the same time, persons responsible for policy formation often do not have sufficient knowledge of how to use research to help resolve policy issues. A major objective of this volume is to illustrate the formation of linkages which may bridge the gap between research and policy. 216 pp. Englisch.

Cannon (1929) recognized that 'back of internal homeostatic mechanisms are powerful motivating agencies-appetites and hunger and thirst.' Almost all observed behavior may be viewed as activity required to meet some physical or emotional need. 'The higher in the scale of living things, the more numerous, the more perfect, and the more compli cated do these regulatory agencies become.' This statement by Fredricq (1885) regarding internal mechanisms is at least as valid for behavior. Adrenal medullary secretion in preparation of 'fight or flight' may be con sidered the first described behavioral neuroendocrine response. The conse quences of more prolonged stress on pituitary-adrenal cortical function and the subsequent unfolding of the means by which the brain controls the secre tion of the anterior and posterior pituitary glands led to the birth of neuroen docrinology. During the last decade, neuroendocrinology has taken a remarkable turn. Peptides which were believed at first to be involved solely in control of the pituitary by the hypothalamus were found in other areas of the brain. Other peptides were encountered in brain by their activity in competing for the high affinity binding of drugs to their receptors, and still others, first found in peripheral organs, were discovered also in brain. Perhaps even more amaz ing was the discovery that one or another of these peptides influence almost every aspect of behavior. 960 pp. Englisch.

The International Biological Program, IBP, had at this time recommended an integrated study of ecosystems selected in proportion to their representation of a particular zone or ecological conditions. In doing this, I have been very fortunate in securing the help of the distinguished authors who have contributed the chapters that follow and I am grateful to them for providing such thorough and up-to-date accounts of their subjects. Immunosuppression can be mediated by many hundreds of agents and it has been difficult to strike a balance between the 'small print' of drug action in animals and the useful ness or otherwise of drugs and other agents for inducing immunosuppression in patients. The first six chapters deal mainly with the experimental aspects of lmmunosuppression and include a full discussion of total lymphoid lrradiation and cyclosporin-A. Both these agents have shown great promise recently as forms of immunosuppression in animals and undoubtedly will come to be used more and more in patients recelvmg transplants of one form or another. The last four chapters are devoted to the use of the more traditional immunosuppressive agents for specific clinical conditions. In her chapter on renal transplantation, Dr McGeown describes in great detail not only the immunosuppressive regime she employs but the general manage ment of transplant patients. The clinical results have been so good in her unit that I felt her account should include these other aspects of treatment since they would seem to be just as important as the immunosuppressive regime she uses. 272 pp. Englisch.

The mathematical disciplines which can be brought to bear on these problems necessitate examination of effectiveness, convergence and robustness of the derived analytic and num~rical algorithms. The aim of this ASI was to give a clear and up-to-date tutorial presentation of available techniques, and to bring together interested scientists, engineers and mathematiciaris, to discuss together their experience and to ensure wider familiarity with the subject. Our programme consists of three distinct yet related parts. The first two of these reflect two somewhat different methods applicable for different ranges of L/A, where L represents a characteristic dimension of a structure and A is a representative wavelength-of radiation. The third part deals with the specific problem of biological interaction. In the first part (Low and Intermediate Frequency Applications) we offer tutorial texts and user-oriented discussions on main techniques and problems concerning: radiation, scattering, aperture penetration, inverse scattering, using moment methods and their developments. The approach to the high frequency applications forms the subject of the second part of this volume, concentrating mainly on the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD). There are three main variants of the GTD: uniform theory of diffraction (UTD), uniform asymptotic theory (liAT) , spectral theory of diffraction (STD). 928 pp. Englisch.

Although formal study of any subject is no guarantee of satisfactory on-the-job performance, teaching practice itself without a knowledge of the fundamental princi ples of education is likely to bring distortions into the teaching situation. Our own experience leads us to believe that many teachers are concerned at this lack of expertise. This concern is manifest by their willing participation in activities which provide them with practical assistance in improving their educational skills. Unfortunately, few books have been written to aid the average clinical teacher wishing to gain a perspective on basic educational principles or seeking suggestions on how these might be applied to teaching. A previous publication by the Advisory Centre for University Education (ACUE) at the University of Adelaide, entitled University Teaching, has proved to be very popular, both locally and overseas, and has clearly met the needs of organi zers and participants in teacher training programmes in tertiary institutions. The success of this publication, and our experience with a variety of educational activities organized for staff of medical and dental schools and postgraduate organizations, led us to believe that a pragmatic educational guide for medical teachers would be of value to all such teachers and particularly to those asked to undertake an educational task for the first time. 164 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Architectural stress is the inability of a system design to respond to new market demands. It is an important yet often concealed issue in high tech systems. In From scientific instrument to industrial machine, we look at the phenomenon of architectural stress in embedded systems in the context of a transmission electron microscope system built by FEI Company. Traditionally, transmission electron microscopes are manually operated scientific instruments, but they also have enormous potential for use in industrial applications. However, this new market has quite different characteristics. There are strong demands for cost-effective analysis, accurate and precise measurements, and ease-of-use. These demands can be translated into new system qualities, e.g. reliability, predictability and high throughput, as well as new functions, e.g. automation of electron microscopic analyses, automated focusing and positioning functions. From scientific instrument to industrial machine takes a pragmatic approach to the problem of architectural stress. In particular, it describes the outcomes of the Condor project, a joint endeavour by a consortium of industrial and academic partners. In this collaboration an integrated approach was essential to successfully combine various scientific results and show the first steps towards a new direction. System modelling and prototyping were the key techniques to develop better understanding and innovative solutions to the problems associated with architectural stress. From scientific instruments to industrial machine is targeted mainly at industrial practitioners, in particular system architects and engineers working on high tech systems. It can therefore be read without particular knowledge of electron microscope systems or microscopic applications. The book forms a bridge between academic and applied science, and high tech industrial practice. By showing the approaches and solutions developed for the electron microscope, it is hoped that system designers will gain some insights in how to deal with architectural stress in similar challenges in the high tech industry. 124 pp. Englisch.

The vacuum conditions needed range from the relatively coarse vacuum requirements in applications covering diverse fields such as food packaging, dentistry (investment casting), vacuum forming, vacuum metallur gical processes, vacuum impregnation, molecular distillation, vacuum drying and freeze drying etc. to the other extreme involving the highest possible vacuum as in particle accelerators, space technology -both in simulation and outer space, and research studies of atomically clean surfaces and pure condensed metal films. Vacua commence with the rough vacuum region, i.e. from atmosphere to 100 Pa \* passing 6 through medium vacuum of 100 Pa to 0 1 Pa and high vacuum of 0 1 Pa to 1 J.lPa (10- Pa) until ultra high vacuum is reached below 1 J.lPa to the limit of measurable pressure about 12 I pPa (10- Pa). 452 pp. Englisch.

Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives. 352 pp. Englisch.

Although much modern music is produced by electronic means. its underlying basis is still traditional acoustical sound production. and that broad topic provides the basis for this book. There are many fine books available that treat musical acoustics largely from the physical point of view. The approach taken here is to present only the fundamentals of musical physics. while giving special emphasis to the relation between instrument and player and stressing the characteristics of instruments that are of special concern to engineers and technicians in volved in the fields of recording. sound reinforcement. and broadcasting. In order to understand musical instruments in their normal performance environments. the student must have a basic working knowledge of physical and architectural acoustics. The book begins with a review of the elements of acoustics. stressing the nature of sound fields and phenomena that are wavelength-dependent. The book then moves on to a discussion of those aspects of psychological acoustics that are of special concern to music technicians. most notably concepts of stereophonic imaging. loudness-related phenomena. and critical band theory. 304 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The technical importance of flexible composite structures needs no emphasis nor has there been any lack of material descriptive of their manufacture or properties. The starting points of such descriptions have invariably been from the viewpoint of the rubber industry and the presence of a suitable textile has been taken for granted, its strength properties indicated and the technological content confined to the manufacturing process within the rubber industry. An attempt is made here to work from the textile outwards. Industrial fabrics are far heavier than garment textiles, are not produced in the same bulk quantities and need to be specially constructed to provide the balance of properties which will combine with those of the rubber to give the final. product. The most important composite structure formed from textiles and rubber is, of course, the pneumatic tyre. It may therefore seem strange that no chapter deals with this. The reason is quite simple. To deal with the structure and design of the pneumatic tyre in a similar depth of detail as is done here for conveyor or power transmission belting, or hose, would require disproportionate space; in fact, a second volume equal in size to the present one. This book discusses from the textile viewpoint the various reinforced rubber structures used industrially with the exception of the tyre. These other uses of industrial fabrics can be discussed in adequate detail and cover the whole range of the technology involved in the space available in the one volume. 288 pp. Englisch.

Sophisticated gamma ray detecting camera systems and computer links enable the clinical investigator to image different regions of the body and to quantify organ function. Parallel developments have also occurred in the field of radiopharmaceuticals, and today a wide range of products is available that will exhibit specific uptake within target tissues following parenteral administration. For example, radioiodide is taken up by the thyroid and iodinated fatty acids can be used to image the myocardium. Labelled antibodies have been used with success to target certain tumours. The concept of targeting has also been considered by pharmaceutical scientists who wish to deliver drugs rather than radionuclides to specific sites in the body. The systems that have been employed are often physically similar to those used as radiopharmaceuticals (for example colloids, aerosols and liposomes). Furthermore, pioneering work by Digenis and others in the United States States and by Alpsten and co-workers (1976)in Sweden had demonstrated the potential of gamma scintigraphy for investigating the fate of tablets and capsules in the gastrointestinal tract of man in a non invasive way. In 1979, the Biopharmaceutics Research Group at Nottingham together with academic pharmacists from Manchester held a one-day syffiposium at Nottingham University to discuss how radio nuclides could be used in drug formulation studies to provide better approaches for the delivery of drugs to their sitesof action. 352 pp. Englisch.

Among the methods of recycling the agricultural use of sludge is a traditional one and a good example with a long history of a meanlngful use of waste material. Increasing demands of water pollution control in the last de cades leading to intensified and extended sewage treatment processes and thus to an increase of the sludge quantity have caused problems in this field in general. In addition, there were local problems of industrial pollution which have led to an increase of harmful substances in municipal sewage sludges. So, when the Concerted Action COST 68 was set up to study the beneficial and harmful effects of the agricultural use of sludge, investigation of harmful substances in the sludges and their environmental effects was 9ne of the main tasks of work. Although the progress of analytical techniques enabled the environmental authorities and institutions to determine harmful substances in sludges with great accuracy, it became clear that unsatisfactory results and an incomplete reproduc ibility of analytical findings often were not due to shortcom ings in the analytical procedure itself but to a preceding in vestigation step: Improper sampling and sample preparation. 104 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Leafy salad vegetables are among the most universally used vegetable crops grown today. Their prominence as important crops has been heightened through the last several decades due to an awareness on the part of consumers of the nutrient, and other obvious values they offer to the diet as 'fresh greens' which, at least in the United States, have become a daily table staple. As a result, acreage planted to leafy salad vegetable crops has expanded to a remarkable degree over the past few decades, making these crops an important segment of the agricultural and marketing industries. Published information on leafy salad vegetables has been-and is widespread and scattered. This book brings together all up-to-date information and is amply referenced throughout for further study and information. Similarities and differences among the species are discussed and provide insight into the place these species hold in the world cropping system and in the human diet. This approach in text organiza tion was made in an effort to be helpful to the widest type of readership: professional researchers and teachers, graduate and undergraduate stu dents, extension workers, farmers and other members of the horticultural community, and, perhaps, even lay readers who are the ultimate consumers. 280 pp. Englisch.

These changes in product ranges have been largely prompted by the producers' desire for economies of scale in production and the con sumers' desire for a wide variety of meat products to be readily available. The purpose of this book is to present a collection of chapters written by specialists on particular aspects of meat microbiology. I hope the structure will present the reader with chapters which, read singly, present a clear account of one aspect, but taken together present a practical and coherent survey of meat microbiology. The chapters may be roughly divided into: (i) Commodity chapters - carcass meat, poultry meat, processed meat, cured meat and by-products. (ii) Quality assurance chapters - bacteria of public health significance, microbiological examination of meat, sampling and limits. The commodity chapters set out the characteristic microbiology of product groups in some detail and provide a practical guide to micro biological considerations in the production of particular types of pro duct. Whilst the content of these chapters is particularly useful to the is often difficult to working microbiologist, information of this nature gather, if it is considered to be commercially valuable, so that the authors have done specially useful tasks in assembling comprehensive data concerning their topics. 544 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Recent legislation and more stringent effluent criteria are placing increased emphasis on effective water quality management. The past few years have seen increased emphasis on research and development into both conventional wastewa ter treatment processes as well as new and advanced technology. The purpose of this book is to present a concise summary of present theory, with emphasis on the application of that theory to both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment problems. This book, in large measure, is an updating of the author's previous books, Biological Waste Treatment, published by Pergaman Press, Industrial Water Pollution Control, published by McGraw-Hill, Water Quality Engineering for Practicing Engineers, published by Cahners Books. This book should be useful as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Water Pollution Control, Industrial Waste Treatment, and Water Qual ity Management. The content of this book has been used as a text in Continuing Education Courses sponsored by Manhattan College, Vanderbilt University, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. A series of problems applying the theories as developed in the text are presented where appropriate. For in-depth study of specific topical areas the reader is referred to the cited book references at the end ofthe text. 732 pp. Englisch.
