Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In our book Theoretical Statistics we gave about 150 Further results and exercises mostly intended to illustrate material of intrinsic interest that it was not possible to cover in the main text. In many cases the statements were based quite directly on recent papers. The present book gives outline solutions and discussion of these problems. To make the book selfcontained we have preceded each set of problems by a brief summary of the main general ideas required. The collection of these summaries provides a rapid review of the theory of statistics. The book contains a substantial amount of general material not previously available in book form. The detailed solution of special problems is a vital part of the study of any mathematical subject and we hope therefore that teachers and students of statistics especially at graduate level will find the problems and outline solutions helpful. In addition we hope that research workers in statistics interested in special problems will find the book an effective review of some useful theoretical ideas including the associated elementary mathematical techniques. While the numbering and arrangement of the problems is the same as in Theoretical Statistics, we have rewritten a number of the problems, partly in order to make them self contained and partly for clarification and correction. 204 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Double and multiple stars are the rule in the stellar population, and single stars the minority, as the abundance of binary systems in the space surrounding the sun shows beyond doubt. Numerous stellar features, and methods of their exploration, ensue specifically from the one but widespread property, the binary nature. Stellar masses are basic quantities for the theory of stellar structure and evolution, and they are ob tained from binary-star orbits where they depend on the cube of observed parameters; this fact illustrates the significance of orbits as well as the accuracy requirements. Useful in dating stellar history is the knowledge that components of a system, different though they may appear, are of the same origin and age. Between star formation and the genesis of binaries a direct connection can be traced. The later stages of stellar life branch into a great variety as mutual influence between the components of a close binary pair develops. Transfer and exchange of mass and the presence of angular momentum in the orbit give rise to special tracks of evolution, not found for single stars, and to peculiar spectral groups. This is not a new story but it has a new ending: The patterns of evolution involving mass transfer appear to lead ultimately to single objects. 190 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The main item in the present volume was published in 1930 under the title Das Unendliche in der Mathematik und seine Ausschaltung. It was at that time the fullest systematic account from the standpoint of Husserl's phenomenology of what is known as 'finitism' (also as 'intuitionism' and 'constructivism') in mathematics. Since then, important changes have been required in philosophies of mathematics, in part because of Kurt Godel's epoch-making paper of 1931 which established the essential in completeness of arithmetic. In the light of that finding, a number of the claims made in the book (and in the accompanying articles) are demon strably mistaken. Nevertheless, as a whole it retains much of its original interest and value. It presents the issues in the foundations of mathematics that were under debate when it was written (and in some cases still are); , and it offers one alternative to the currently dominant set-theoretical definitions of the cardinal numbers and other arithmetical concepts. While still a student at the University of Vienna, Felix Kaufmann was greatly impressed by the early philosophical writings (especially by the Logische Untersuchungen) of Edmund Husser!' He was never an uncritical disciple of Husserl, and he integrated into his mature philosophy ideas from a wide assortment of intellectual sources. But he thought of himself as a phenomenologist, and made frequent use in all his major publications of many of Husserl's logical and epistemological theses. 260 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The NATO Advanced Study Institute 'Paleorift Systems with Emphasis on the Permian Oslo Rift' was held at Sundvollen near Oslo, Norway, 26. July - 5. August, 1977. The meeting included 6 field trips to various parts of the Oslo Region. 70 official participants and 16 observers from 14 countries attended the meeting. The majority of the invited lectures, short research papers and progress reports presented at the meeting are published in two volumes, of which this is volume No. II. A table of con tents for both volumes is include8 herein. The field trip guide is being published in the Nor~gian Geological Survey Series, Vol. 327 (1978). We are especially pleased to acknowledge the efforts of the many authors of contributed papers, and the able assistance of secretaries, proof-readers and other staffmembers without whose help these volumes would not have been possible. Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -K.J. Ives Professor of Public Health Engineering University College London The aggregation of small particles in liquids, to form flocs which are large enough to settle, or to be filtered, is a common operation in industrial processes, and water and wastewater treatment. This aggregation, given the general title flliocculation in this book, may be brought about by the addition of chemicals to reduce the stability of the original suspension, by neutralising electrical forces of repulsion, by the addition of chemicals (polymers) to link particles by bridging action, by the addition of chemicals which form particles to increase collision proba bilities, and by the input of energy leading to hydrodynamically induced collisions. The particles undergoing flocculation may range from colloidal in the nanometer size range, through micro scopic (micron) size, up to visible particles in the millimeter size range; that is a total size range of six orders of magnitude. Consequently the colloid chemist and the hydrodynamicist are both concerned with the interactions that take place, and to them the engineer must turn, to obtain the fundamental information ne cessary for the process design and its associated hardware. 376 pp. Englisch.

L. Greenstein, ed. ) held in Moscow in 1959. In 1974 a conference, Multicolor Photometry and the Theoretical HR Diagram (Dudley Obs. Report No. 9, A. G. D. Philip and D. S. Hayes, eds. ) was held in Albany, N. Y. ; and in 1964 a conference, Basic Data Pertaining to the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, was held at the Flagstaff Station of the U. S. Naval Observatory in honor of Ejnar Hertzsprung and to dedicate the 61-inch astrometric reflector. (Vistas in Astronomy Vol. ~, A. Beer and K. Aa. Strand, eds. , Pergamon Press, Oxford). Volume 12 of Vistas in Astronomy, The Henry Norris Russell Memorial Volume (1970), contains a review paper on Changing Interpretations of the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram 1910-1940, A Historical Note by B.
