But it was Phillips [41], and Lumer and Phillips [37] who first called attention to the importance of dissipative and dispersive properties of the generator in the context of linear operators in a Banach space. The generation theorems in the Batty-Robinson paper appear to be the most definitive ones, so far, for this class of operators. The fundamental role played by the infinitesimal operator, also for the understanding of order properties, in the commutative as well as the noncommutative setting, are highlighted in a number of examples and applications in the different papers, and it is hoped that this publication will be of interest to researchers in a broad spectrum of the mathematical sub-divisions. 208 pp. Englisch.

Moreover, the future for electrochemical technology is bright and there is a general expectation that new applications of electro…chemistry will become economic as the world responds to the challenge of more expensive energy, of the need to develop new materials and to exploit different chemical feedstocks and of the necessity to protect the environment. ' Inthis situation, the present rather fragmentary state ofelectrochemical technology is disappointing. Whilethere are many similarities in the underlying principles and even the practices of the electrochemically based industries, they are often not fully appreciated. Certainly, the Rand D programmes in many industries are in the hands of those with little formal training and whose experience of and interest in other branches of electrochemistry is very limited. Moreover, the academic world has done little to help. Electrode processes are, too often, totally ignored in courses to both scientists and engineers and certainly electrochemical technology is almost never taught as a unified subject with an appropriate balance between fundamentals, engineering and applications. Overall, it isnot surprising that the various strands have not interwoven and that scientists and engineers do not have a proper appreciation of the importance of electrochemical technology. This limitation took place despite all the financial assistance which we have received from various institutions, first the C. N. R. S. (Centre National de 1a Recherche Scientifique) which has supported the request of Dr. Monique SIGNORE of organizing a workshop. Furhter help was obtained from I. N. A. G. (Institut National d'Astronomie et de Geophysique), Toulouse University (Universite 'Paul Sabatier' or 'Toulouse III'), the Toulouse section of C. N. E. S. The issues addressed include techniques for observation over a wide ran…ge of scales, the influence of .microcracking on common measures of strength and de formability , and ultimately, the relationship between microstructural changes in concrete under load and its resistance to cracking. It is now commonly accepted that, in past attempts to force-fit the behavior of concrete into the rules of linear elastic fracture mechanics, proper attention has not been paid to scale effects. Clearly, the relationships among specimen size, crack length and opening, and characteristic material fabric dimensions have been, in comparison to their counterparts in metals, ceramics, and rocks, abused in concrete. Without a fundamental understanding of these relationships, additional testing in search of the elusive, single measure of fracture toughness has spawned additional confusion and frustration. Adherents an…d critics of these traditions tend to assurnethat they are diametrically opposed, that their roots, concerns and approaches contradict each other, and that no reconciliation is possible. In contradistinction Russell derives both traditions from the common root of the dissatisfaction with the arguments against speculative philosophy. These according to the author leave a lacuna - certain elementsof our Weltanschaaung have been removed, but they cannot be removed without replacement lest we have an incomplete world view, so incomplete in fact that it cannot be viable. According to Russell part of this vacuum is taken up by the analytical tradition but this tradition is not capable of taking up the remainder of it. That portion of the vacant space is however taken up by the dialectical tradi tion, which in turn cannot itself handle the whole of the problem. Thus the two reactions to the demise of speculative philosophy appear to be complementary in at least this sense.
